Almost all of the watch companies aren’t the same founding families anymore....take Swatch Group and Richemont for example. It’s just the way it is in this era. The further we are in time from the founding of companies the more likely that the companies have nothing in common with the original founders and their descendants. It’s not just watches either.

These are basic Russian watches based on old technology. They are what they are. I own 3 and find them quite charming with a real history. They are very comfortable to wear, and I consider myself fortunate to own them. Enjoy them for what they are, no more no less. And I adore that Made in Russia logo. I want to thank the men and women who built these watches for us all to enjoy.

Exactly...& I intend to buy at least one very soon. They're not quite as accurate as the fine mass produced Swiss movements BUT are more durable...& what other new mechanical jewelled watch can be bought for this kind of money? Answer: None... They do have more "upmarket" ranges that use Seiko mechanical movements BUT they're far more expensive. I think they're quite fabulous in their own utilitarian & practical way...& of course serviceable too.

A couple of things I noted. (I bought a proper Vostok Amphibia '100' series watch a month ago) 1. The Komandirskies are not the variant of choice. The unmarked rotating bezel is a stupid idea on the Komandirskie and one of the reasons I didn't go for that model. You would have seen that in photos before you picked it, so you've only got yourself to blame there.. The Amphibia is more logical with its rotating marked bezel. 2. The dial of the Komandirskies are pretty bland and school-clock looking compared to the Amphibia. But not helped that you picked possibly the blandest dial of all the Vostok models and the blandest looking of all the Komandirskies. But again, why you're complaining about that, I dunno because you chose the bland dial variant yourself. 3. The crown has a clutch, and is designed to be wobbly, so it is not easily bent or damaged via being accidentally struck. If I could show you what the clutch mechanism looks like inside, you would understand why it wobbles and appreciate the engineering of it, instead of going off just the wobbly feel alone. 4. You said you were unsure how waterproof it is. A quick search gives the Komandirskie water resistance as similar/same to the Amphibia. Look at the caseback- it has the very well engineered 2 piece caseback and that is very, very robust. 5. The issue with the date adjustment- I never had any of that with my Amphibia. You got a bad one, unfortunately. 6. The straps are all crap. We all know that. We don't buy them to keep the shitty straps on them. I had a stainless Shark mesh strap here in the mail before the watch even arrived. I never wore my Amphibia with the crappy strap. I took it off straight away. I also don't recommend you buy the narrow 18mm strap case like you did. You should have got the 22mm wide strap/case variant as it is nicer. My Amphibia has run perfectly so far and its one of my favorites in terms of its solid feel, weightiness, reliability and the compliments its had so far, from people who think it looks more expensive than it really was. And the stainless mesh bracelet (which I sized myself at home because it was too fiddly for my watch dealer) ups the look and feel by a whole lot. What you bought here is pretty much the anti-christ/complete opposite of Vostok I would have recommended you to buy.

This is a retro design watch as it’s been produced since the First World War. It was made as a utilitarian watch that is robust and fairly waterproof. For the price they are still excellent value. Simply tearing it apart as being useless is missing the whole point of the watch and when it was originally designed. The watch contains many clever innovations which were developed in a tight budget and have been proved very successful over time. I suggest you buy a Rolex and then you’ll have no reason to complain. To sum up your review was insulting in the extreme.

The Vostok is an interesting little beast. The leather straps and bracelets are immediate throwaways. The wobbly crown is actually a engineering choice as it takes the lateral pressure off the keyless works when the watch is being hand wound. Just pure practicality - remember this was and is a military watch and not made for owners/collectors that delicately and lovingly wind their watches. It is cheaply finished. And I agree with some of what you say about dial and bezel, but there are a million flavors of Vostok. Yes all equally cheap with a few exceptions, but that appeals to some. You can certainly find your flavor in case/dial/Bezel with Vostok.

  • @gunscratch
    @gunscratch4 жыл бұрын

I don't think you quite understand the mindset of the Vostok community. You're absolutely right, by most watch standards they appear to be absolute crap but in other ways they are pure genius. Let me explain. The Komandirskies like this one are really, really cheap and look tacky granted, but look at the amount you paid for it. Vostok straps and bracelets everyone knows are so notoriously bad the first thing anyone does is chuck it and stick something decent on. And the lume can be very hit and miss but I have Chinese watches that are the same, if not worse. The watch you have here is a chrome plated brass model and I agree, they look crap and cheap BUT if you'd spent a little extra there are now stainless models which also have good 100m water resistance. It means you can swim with it unlike the model of Komandirskie you show hear and 99% of Chinese looky-likey diver watches. Not all Vostoks are created equal. Step up to the Amphibia is great, and shares the same movement for about £50 and you get 200m water resistance. The watches themselves aren't always perfect cosmetically but owners just love to mod them with new bezels, hands, perhaps a dial, and straps/bracelets. After this you end up with something quirky and unique and yes, often the mods cost more than the base watch but the base watch is sound. And it's just something some people like to do. It has a reliable movement that doesn't need servicing for over 10 year and that keeps reasonable time for a mechanical watch and that wobbly crown IS a design feature. It doesn't matter whether or not other watch manufacturers use it. NO OTHER car manufacturer other than Porsche is stupid enough to stick a high powered engine in the BACK of a sports car but it's what Porsche do! You bang on about "Why didn't Rolex do it if it's so good?" The answer is back in the 1960s the Russians needed a dive watch for their military and were not going to buy licenses from the Swiss, so they came up with their own design which from an engineering point of view is far superior to most dive watches, and if the Swiss had made it instead of the Soviets you'd be singing their praises about how good it is. The wobbly crown detaches from the stem which means any sudden shock to it won't damage the movement. But yeah, go on keep knocking that which you are actually showing your ignorance about. To those who understand Vostock watches you are coming across as arrogant and not knowing what on earth you're on about. Think about it, it might not be the prettiest thing on the planet and it's not perfect (a unidirectional bezel should be standard) but a Vostok watch costs less than 1% of a Rolex that you keep comparing it to. If it wasn't a Soviet design from 50 years ago you'd probably a small fortune if it had "Swiss Made" on the dial. Seriously, look at some of the videos about Vostok's history and you might start to think a little bit differently about them. But at the end of the day it's about having FUN. You don't HAVE to buy the watch if you don't like it. But some guys just like to mess about with stuff and why not? Just because you don't happen to like something you don't have to dis it for people that do, we all have to get along and it's not worth falling out over something as totally irrelevant as a watch, I mean SERIOUSLY - some of the comments, geesh! You have the think of Vostock owners a bit like VW camper van owners. You can own one from the 60's that's slow, noisy, breaks down, but has bags of character and fun, or if you just want an easy life and a comfortable camper van experience you can splash out on a new VW T6 California. Both do a job, the same job, just like watches. So, chill and have fun; if you don't like this watch and think it's crap then that's absolutely fine but if you buy it as a piece of fun that has a weirdly painted dial and a useless bezel, hey, what's the harm of someone enjoying that? Each to their own, and just enjoy life. And chill out, just because someone doesn't necessarily agree with your point of view it doesn't make what they say a lie. Don't take things so personally, we're all here to share. Have a great day.

nav san Firstly, let’s try NOT to get off on the wrong foot again. I own several Vostoks which I enjoy modding and a 1960s Komandirskie that keeps excellent time. I don’t own this particular Komandirskie at the moment, but I plan on getting one to strip the chrome and give it an antique brass finish. Secondly, Russian watches were built in a certain way because of the communist Soviet regime of the time. They haven’t really caught up with 21st century manufacturing but why should they when they can trade on quirkiness and charm rather than having to go to quartz and compete with the likes of Casio? Waterproofing is almost genius on the Amphibians as the greater the water pressure the better the case seals and it seals so the gaskets don’t need replacing (think Kilner jar = Vostok vs screw-top jam jar = every other sub/diver) Downside = acrylic crystal is easily scratched. Also, 10 year servicing is possible; yes, Rolex now do 10 year service intervals. Basically, enjoy what you wear. You don’t happen to like this watch but you also said you didn’t like the design of the Amphibian dial and that’s why you didn’t get one. There are literally dozens of dials and case styles in the Amphibian lineup and, dare I say it, in the Komandirskie range. To compare it to a Seiko 5 costing 5x the price isn’t really fair. That’s like comparing a 1970s Mini to a modern day one i.e. they’re totally different beasts.

"a watch that screams to the world I am poor!" Is what you said in response to someone who said they liked the watch. This is disappointing to see from a watch enthusiast. Watch collecting isn't about showing off to everyone how rich you are. Don't own one currently (amphibia £50) it's on the way, can't wait to see if this vintage diver lives up to hype or falls flat as you said happy to let you know how it performs when it arrives

More like the "worst watch review I have ever experienced", as your review only mentions the negatives and quite frankly, it's not a balanced review. Vostok watches are tool watches, and they get the job done. And the main reason why watch lovers get them is because of the fact they are easy to mod and its horological history. Fine if you don't like the watch, but you could have mentioned something positive about the watch or the brand's history. I got 6 Vostoks in my collection and never had an issue with them. But I do agree the straps/bracelets aren't great, so most watch enthusiasts swap it out for a different strap/bracelet.

It's standard with most automatic mechanical watches to have the time off by a bit, including luxury watches like Rolex (I have inherited a Rolex from my dad and I noticed that). I've an old Soviet Komandirskie. It's was made in the early 80s. It has the bronzed submarine face and the date wheel. Considering these watches were made enmass for the Soviet military, finesse wasn't high on the list of priorities. They were built to take severe punishment. Along with low manufacturing cost, reliability was the main consideration. I use this watch as my everyday beater timepiece. It keeps excellent time for an old mechanical movement. It looses about a minute a week. It's waterproof too. Not like the Amphibia, which is a darn good low cost diving watch. However, it's good enough for swimming, snorkeling, sailing, kayaking etc. It's a very reliable low cost timepiece. I've fitted a NATO style strap to mine. The original straps are awful. I was happy to see fitting a NATO strap to a Soviet watch, didn't cause a chain reaction that exploded the watch 🤣. I've heard the Soviet Komandirskies, are tougher than the modern Russian made models. Vostok Komandirskie watches are great no frills,, low cost beater watches 😃.

Its a military watch built to a design first laid down in the late sixties, its not fancy and yet is fully functional and these were tested to destruction in a simulated sea bed submarine rescue to 800metres and certified 200m due to the ingenious glass and back cover design. Vostok straps have long been a bone of contention, I tried mine on a 5 ring NATO and it looks just wrong, so put it on a proper divers ND strap and looks just so much better. It really is horses for courses, if you want a Ferrari of a watch, buy a Rolex or Omega, if you want a Ford Cortina of a watch then a Vostok is very much that, my main wearer is early eighties and is absolute top dog for accuracy and I can get it wet too, that the waterproofing is still active 40 years on says a lot.

The one thing that viewers have to know about this review. He's clearly over hyping and exaggerating what he sees to be negative points. It's a $50.00 watch. For what you pay, you get a lot of durability and functionality. I have several of these Vostok watches along with a collection of much, much more expensive western watches and I can tell you that the Vostok products are worth the money. Change the strap (I put NATO straps on all of mine), remember to wind it in the morning and you'll love it. Don't let biased, subjective reviews like this influence you. This guy clearly has some sort of an axe to grind with Vostok.

For me the graphics on the scuba dude are really corny and really cool. And the bi directional bezel with the black and red dot's is useless but fabulous. Tragically I think the guys that run Vostok these days probably think the way you do and are attempting to make more contemporary watches. Big mistake if you ask me. There is no other brand like Vostok, they were a law unto themselves. They should be very careful with the products they make or they may well lose their mojo. Keep em weird!

But holy crap I made the mistake of going into the comments and I don't think I've ever seen a more insecure OP based on the comments. Someone seriously needs to learn healthy coping skills with criticism. I really hope OP was just having an off day and this isn't how they always deal with criticism.

If you did it would be racist. Mate I brought the BE up precisely because it has nothing to do with anything? The collapse of the British Empire has zero relevance. I did exactly what you did. I thought it was obvious that I was mocking the UK only to prove how pointless and irrelevant mocking the USSR is. The outcome of the Cold War has absolutely nothing to do with the watch and wasn’t pertinent to your review. But you threw it in for what reason? I asked you why, you still haven’t said. I’m left to believe it must be racist. The outcome of the British Empire has absolutely nothing to do with this either and I brought it up only as an example. I don’t care about Brexit. I think people who criticise Vostok watches invariably know nothing of the history or back story of them. We know the straps are terrible, we know the crowns wobble (a design feature). A good analogy would be the Mini. There is no way on earth, the original mini is the best car ever made, but try and find someone who wouldn't want one. Vostoks are not meant to be competing with Rolex, but the huge choice of dials, bezels and other modding options, makes them attractive to people who are not watch snobs, but watch enthusiasts. I have several of these including Komandirskie's and an Amphibia Scuba Dude, and the Scuba Dude in particular has many design features which make you wonder where the boutique companies come to their pricing? As for the time, running fast or slow, these watches are easily adjusted and run very accurately after this is done. Ultimately, you either love them or hate them, but I think that for the most part people who think that only expensive named brands are worth having, they will never appreciate them. Personally, I love them! I do find it interesting that you compare it to a Chinese watch. A quick peruse of your channel, show that you have a great interest in China. Maybe, a little bias is clouding your judgement............?

I See you don't know absolutely nothing about watches. You don't give any arguments why it should be bad! Maybe you are paid by someone. First, the movement is a good copy of a swiss AS-mouvement. It is long lasting. The crown is that way to be wound with gloves. It is designed that way.The back has a special sealing copied from Bulova which is the best system ever. So why does Rolex not make it the same way, to talk in your childish way? Because they are to stupid! It's as simple as that. The strap is also of very good quality and lasts several years! By the way, the Casio is better than a Rolex. Other asskissers say it’s to stop the movement being damaged. I See you don't know absolutely nothing about watches. Where in the time line did I talk about special sealing copied from Bulova, more copying for top ends brands. Hmmmm tell me why do you like fake watches so much? First off, the crown is supposed to be wobbly; that is how it's designed. It is like that because back in the 50s and 60s, to build an affordable watch, creative design was better than brute-force crown-guards. Built wobbly, the watch does not need crown-guards yet can take a hit to the crown without compromising the water resistance of snapping the stem. Secondly, in order to advance the date by moving forward and backward over midnight, all you have to do is move it like an hour further. In the video, I can even see the date reset occurring as the date wheel briefly moves in the opposite direction. Once it moves far enough, it will quietly click, from there, just move it forward again and it will change forward. It's that simple. You are entitled to your opinion, but please, use your brain and not your snobbery as your judge.

@@TheNomadsLens It depends on what model you get, but the low quality is just a consequence of the low cost. However, they do hold up pretty well in day to day wear. It's a watch not intended to be as accurate as reliable. In other words, it's Soviet brute force design. Vostok is infamous for a general lack of product improvement over time. Both Vostoks that I own have a rotatable bezel with either numerals or little dots. That issue is just a consequence of what I admit to being terrible quality control. With some work, the hands can be realigned without too much difficulty. It's no Rolex or Omega, but at the end of the day, the time can still be read. If you read up on the origins of Vostok watches, you soon find out that the designers could not use any foreign patents such as crown guards. Damage to the crown, and subsequently the stem, could include dropping the watch while winding. These "innovations" are likely overkill, however that is what makes the Vostok so quirky. The Amfibia is the Kommandirskie's cousin in the Vostok realm, it is also a dive watch intended for 200m max dive depth. As mentioned before, Vostok is infamous for lack of product improvement over time, which comes down to the fact that both the Kommandirskie and the Amfibia basically use the same case and movement. The movement in these watches hasn't changed in many years, it is extremely outdated due to a lack of product improvement over time. These movements were first built before the quick-change date was a common complication. Even some vintage Rolexes don't have a quick-change date, it was just a sign of the times. It is frustrating, but you're fine if you never let the watch go unwound. Sorry for the last bit, I was a little bit of an asshole there. I turned out the knee-jerk response because one of the Vostoks I own carries a very personal significance for me and my family's legacy. In short, the Vostok I wear today survived a desperate escape from Soviet Russia to Canada in the late 1900s. BTW I do own the watch.

  • @TheGoodwolfe

You are obviously free to have and express your own opinion of the watch, but I believe your thoughts about fans of Vostok watches was a bit presumptuous. Many watch collectors and people just fascinated by watches have an affection for Vostok watches that is not just some kind of unfounded loyalty. Yes, the Amphibia is many people's favorite, but the Komandirskie has fans too. Beyond just their basic time keeping function, these watches also have a certain "character". For some collectors, it takes time to develop an appreciation for them, as I've know a few who disliked the watch at first, and later it became one of their favorites. The history of how the design was born out of necessity in the 60's is also interesting. It's rather a remarkable piece of engineering with the floating crown, stem and internal clutch system, along with the two part case back/gasket where added pressure actually increase it's water resistance, but the way it contacts it, doesn't wear out the gasket. They can be regulated to be very accurate, are also very sturdy & reliable, and can go for many years without service, unlike many Swiss mechanical watches. They also have some unique dial designs, each with their own following, and with the "scuba dude' being one of most popular. I personally have half a dozen Vostok watches, different styles and models, but find them all fascinating and interesting. My daily wearer is a Amphibia with the Scuba Dude and tri-color Nato strap. For many people, one of the coolest things beyond the inspired engineering of it, are the interesting looks & designs of the dials which give Vostoks a unique appearance, unlike anything else. Anyway, even though you intentionally selected the most conventional looking dial and bezel, it's still a cool watch in it's own right, and you may eventually come around to appreciate it. Plus, where else could you get a unique watch, with a 17-jewel in-house mechanical movement that should last for many years, for a mere $40 bucks?

I have had my 436783 ( the same watch, except mine come with a diver's bezel and a nato strap) for two years now. Can't complain at all. Any scratches are quickly removed with toothpaste. Tough as nails. You do have to change your mindset when you start using mechanical watches. I.e., do not think of the second hand as a time keeping tool. (See it as showing elapsed time, but not to tell you what time it is to the very second.) It will never be as accurate as G shock, but it will always be a conversation piece. In my case, it fits into my airline job nicely, giving me a couple of daily rituals ... I set it every morning with the current time using the plane's GPS, and I wind it up while enjoying my afternoon coffee. Working with it, I find it much easier timing with an analog than a digital watch. I can keep both hands free, and not have to fumble around with pushers, and its much easier keeping a mental image of where a hand was than trying to remember a number on a digital display. Give yourself time to understand it for what it is and the world it came from, and you will enjoy your Vostok.

This is by far the worst review I've seen on one of these watches, and its very clear he bought one for the sake of clickbaiting. You're paying $60 for a mechanical, hand wound watch based on Russian technology. Did you really expect to be receiving a sea master? These things are some of the best deals mechanical watches. You can mod them, they're accurate (unlike what you said), and they're cheap. Some watches, like the 811818, are fucking beautiful too. And before you spam your panic copy-paste, no, I'm not making fun of you for your English, and I'm not defending Russia. The watches are different from the Kremlin. P.S.: Russia doesn't have a standard issue watch and not even the Soviets had one. No good commander is going to go into the field wearing a highly reflective, blingy ass Komandirski

Whilst I appreciate your honest overview of the Vostok Komandirskie, I feel your criticisms should be leveled to the watch, manufacturing, quality and not to those who own or have purchased one. Comments about people who own such watches wanting to be like or act like the Russian Military totally unnecessary. To be honest you probably purchased what Vostok owners would consider the lowest end of the market. If you wanted to review a better Komandirskie you should have gone for the K35 or K34 which is stainless steel and not chrome plated brass like the very cheap version you bought. The Vostok Amphibia is a better choice all round although will use the same Russian in house built 2416B or 2415 movement. The movements are robust as advertised. They always require regulation in order to settle them down but again to fans, that is part of the charm. There is a huge market for modification which unless you are into it, you will probably never appreciate. I think in order to understand Vostok you probably need to spend some time researching them further before you ripping them apart. They will never be as good as Seiko but run it close and do use the same bezel insert specification as the SKX007/009.

Idk man... you did buy the absolute shittiest/cheapest model they offer. There is a legitimate reason that they do the wobbly crown thing, and from what I remember it had something to do with the soviets not wanting to have any design elements borrowed from western makers. They wanted a purely USSR designed movement. Also something about if it gets bumped hard the movement won't be affected, just the stem that is easily replaced. These watches are well known to have the occasional QC problem as well, so the functiinality issues you are having are not the norm. I have had 3 vostoks and they all functioned much better than yours and had no alignment problems. You can also mess with the movement and make it a good bit more accurate, although the accuracy you are getting is not typical from my experience. And dude. . The complaints about the looks are kinda on you. I imagine there were pictures of the watch where you got it. Did you ever think maybe it isn't the brand as a whole that sucks but rather this particular watch?

Can you tell me what type of brute-force would damage the crown that it needs to have wobbly crown? Anything that would impact the crown would also break your hand. So your hand would be broken but you're cheap watch would be ok. Why does the watch have crown guards? The watch is 30m water resistance so you wouldn't even shower with it on. Today is 9th and the watch date is 11th so you have to move forward and backward, forward and backward, forward and backward, forward and backward, over midnight. What’s the benefit?

You can change the date by going back to the 8 hour position and then to 12 instead of rotating full circle two times, at least on the Vostok 2416 automatic movement that mine has. Repeat until date adjusted. Also, depending on the case it will either feel tinny or like steel. They had supply issues and were making some components not from steel on the cheaper models. I got my self-winding Komandirskie (case no. 020) for 85$ and it works good. I tested it for accuracy and it is +10s daily. Pretty much like a Seiko 5, but better because you don't have to flail your arm like an idiot until it winds if it discharges. You can spend 30$ more and get the full solid link bracelet for the price of a Seiko 5. The wobble is a feature. The Komandirskies and Amphibias are made to be shockproof. I believe they did it with the wobble because at the time they were designed, they needed to develop a new shockproof method because they could be sued by the likes of Rolex, Omega etc. for patent infringement. Had my Vostok fall on its crown and somehow it still worked. For it running faster or slower more than 1 minute, take it to get demagnetized or let it discharge and try winding it again. If you overwind it, it can go crazy long before you break the main spring. I overwound mine and it gained 86 seconds on the day. After letting it unwind, it went back to 10 seconds a day. If it still doesn't work, I'm pretty sure the crown got hit or something in transit and it bent the main spring. All in all, it is a cheap watch that can't approach better brands like Hamilton, Certina, Bulova, Breitling etc. but is a nice every day carry watch. It keeps the time okay.

I hope I made your day a bit brighter by providing troll service. Enjoy it.

Wow another long rant about a watch you don't own. You're a troll jumping on everything you have been told to like contradicts your puny opinion, after all you don't own this watch. From what I've read here you fan boys just keep yelling the same crap over and over, its cheap, cheap, cheap, history about a bankrupcy company, yada yada yada. With so many triggered fan boys you really don't understand need to watch a video about a watch they own, do you? As some one who doesn't even own the you're quite rude, even to folks that actually try to take you're serious when you say "I'm gonna buy a Vostok just to annoy you" and that affects my life how? You was already planning on buying one, model no. 710059, whats up still saving up? wait you said was so now you're not as its junk? You made your day a bit brighter now I know I have made you change your mind hahahaha. I think you should still buy it just to annoy.

I get you don't like it. But for a third the price of a Seiko 5, it's going to be a bit rough round the edges. Vostok spends far, far more time on ensuring durability and service life than appearance. There is a combination of a couple of factors- parts are deliberately built with loose tolerances between parts so as parts wear down they still function properly and also allows use of harder alloys than in other watches because deburring doesn't throw out part tolerances, and also allows buildup of grime without stopping function, and additionally a hugely overpowered mainspring results in the loud tick and reduced need for lubrication, plus helps to clear out grime buildup. They are designed to be regulated by the user, they spend less time in factory regulating and pass that saving on to the end user, same with dial decoration etc. This is typical of Soviet technology- things were built to be durable and user serviceable, not pretty. I've looked at museum collections of Kalashnikov pattern rifles, and they are much the same- often handguards don't quite fit right to the rifle and they are always overgassed. Using them is not a great experience. But they do work, and they will work through anything, and any failure is going to be able to be fixed with minimal tooling by the user. This is the same with cars like the Lada or Trabant, or Soviet radios, cameras, essentially every technical product. Are they "good"? No, not by Western standards. A seiko 5 is a much better watch, really. But they are a statement for right-to-repair and independence in the day and age of Apple and watch corporations that void your warranty if anyone but them pops the caseback that it's hard to ignore. I ask you this; the Casio F-91W is an unattractive digital with limited functions that is about a quarter the price of a G-shock. Would you make a video saying how you just don't get it? Why would you buy this when the alternative is so much better? And if you say no, because the F-91W keeps good time, then why would you not then make a video saying any automatic is bad because it keeps worse time? The objective appearance and capability of keeping time is not the reason people like watches.

I'm with you on this. Two different cosmonauts chose the vostok amphibia in the early 350 case when they went into space. No swiss company will sell you a genuine space watch for just $60-100

@Jonas Rodger cosmonauts didn't chose the vostok amphibia it all they had no choice in the matter. You can buy a Casio for $60-100, cosmonauts have used and still use Casio. The fact you can't buy a swiss watch for $60-100 just shows how over priced they're.

He is right on the money too, your complaints are valid if someone sold you a Vostok and told you you should have the same experience as you would with a $500 Tissot for example. However anyone that buys a Vostok buys it for many other reasons, they're great looking watches with a unique mechanism inside them, they're definitely an awesome conversation piece for any watch enthusiast out there. They for sure have flaws which everyone knows about, but they don't put me off from buying another one.

The caseback design that is often lauded as an engineering marvel is based off older American designs. You can find exactly the same type of caseback design for water resistance on vintage 50s and 60s Bulovas. There must be others too. It's definitely not Vostok invented since they didn't do this back in the 60s. It's just a good idea they used as well. Nothing to be particularly ashamed or proud of. Just a good engineering decision.

Only mechanicals from a real manufacturer (ie not knock off shitter factories operating out of a garage somewhere in south China) that is in a cheaper range is HMT from India. Buy one and you'll see how lovely Vostoks are. Best bang for buck is definitely proper Chinese manufacturers like Beijing and Sea-gull for mechanicals. Seiko obviously as well but that money only buys the low end Seikos from Malaysian factories. Orients too.

In 1989 there were a few hipster startup companies selling Soviet items through catalog. At the time I slipped on some ice and broke my collarbone. My fiancé bought me a Komandirskie Tank crew watch as a sympathy gift to cheer me up. It cost $35. It has been in my regular 5 watch rotation ever since and has seen much more use than the others. In fact, I’ve been wearing it for the past 6 months, fixing up my new house and working part time in shipping and receiving. It takes a beating every day! It’s never been serviced. It loses a minute and a half a day and I don’t care. It looks great. It has sentimental value to me…., celebrated our 34th anniversary last week. I’m no watch snob. Never owned a watch over $600. But show me a better value for $35….. I dare you.

Just ordered a komandirski out of curiosity, i have a automatic Vostok anfibia that i purchased for about 90/100€ and i am very impressed with it, keeps great time and feels tough. Someone even made a video testing a similar model to mine and found the accuracy to be outperforming many luxury brands. The komandirski line was even in the soviet times meant to be cheap and accessible, and as far as hand wond movements desinged in the 1960's go like no shit it has +/- 1 minute. Youre comparing a cheap 1960's design againts modern digital watches. and it wasn't used by the Red army. It was only the anfibia sub-brand that was used by Soviet frogmen and certain sectors of the navy... I also don't understand the complaining you have a about the strap, its only function is to keep the watch on your hand and unless you cant operate a buckle it does the job good enough. Truth be said the komandirski line in its current form is an exercise in nostalgia for people who remember a time before quartz, and enjoy the noise that's made when you wind it up.

mostly right. wobbly crown is so the stem is not stressed if there is a case movement misalignment when screwed down. something some Omegas suffer from. The nicer amphibia is a triumph of good design overcoming poor production processes. the compressor case can withstand over 20atm without the high quality materials and precision fits of a Rolex and this is why the watch is of interest to me. I also own an MZ motorcycle which has a similar design ethic

The reason why people love it is because it is a 40 dollar mechanical watch that will run for 10 years and is not a clomage. Yes the finishing is rough, the materials don't feel great, and the features are lacking. But many people are willing to happily put up with that because it is a watch for the same price as lunch from a restaurant that lasts longer than anything else in its price bracket. I get if that isn't your taste and would pay more for a more "nice" watch. You are entitled to your opinion :)
