Rubber Toys Aka Rubber Animals (1957)

Ashford, Middlesex.
Rubber toys are manufactured and painted at a factory. C/U of a wire framework for a rabbit toy being made by twisting wire around a framework of metal pegs. C/U of woman preparing the latex mixture which will cover the wire frame. C/U of the wire framework being inserted into a mould. The rubber solution is poured into the mould.
M/S of woman pulling rabbit toys out of moulds. She briefly checks them then throws them in a pile. A golliwog toy is held in a frame whilst its face is sprayed black. The narrator explains that the toys are earning valuable dollars for Britain and are exported to practically every country in the world. L/S of another part of the factory where "experienced girl artists" paint details on the toys - eyes and feet etc. C/U of a mouse toy having his feet painted and a bunny having his bow tie painted. Various shots of the toys being painted.
Strange C/U of one of the Donald Duck shaped toys being hit from the side by a rubber boxing glove - bizarre. This presumably shows how tough the toys are. End shot is of bizarre Bambi style toy being manipulated from side to side - presumably to show how flexible the toys are.
Note: according to paperwork the company is Newfeld Ltd and their factory is called "Newfoam Works". An article about the toys appears in an issue of the Perambulator Gazette and Nursery Trader held on file.

I know I shouldn't have been all that surprised considering when this took place, but I really was not expecting that.

Back before nets were a necessary thing to keep employess from leaping out of windows. Sending manufacturing overseas was a bad idea in many ways.

It's a shame they don't show the golly's when they're finished. Strange omission by the filmmaker. Films like this will be the only evidence this kind of thing used to happen once all the toys have degraded.

You're racist cause you only saw one part of the painting process and went with the R word.

You may wish to look up the history of the doll you speak of. Just because you have been told something, don't just blindly believe it.
