The gorosei literally explain that Luffy’s fruit’s natural form is rubber and that you only get the absurd powers after you awaken. The fruit’s power was never imagination. The awakening simply allows him to mild the world to what he can imagine. He doesn’t actually have the ability to turn sand into diamonds or create black holes simply because he imagines it. Gear 5 does have limitations.

Luffy’s power really is ridiculous, like it’s from classic cartoons

Can we just take a moment to appreciate Kaido's character too? Usually anime villains would fall flat instantly after a protagonist's ultimate transformation. But he's still out here tanking Gear 5 Toon Force hits. Oda has always respected his antagonist's strength and wrote them to remain consistently formidable AFTER a power up by the hero.

That's what makes One Piece fights so good The antagonists are where they are because they're battle hardened they aren't just gonna sit on their asses and lose(except like, Ceaser). All the way up to their defeat they still manage to come up with some way to try and stave off defeat/claim victory. Crocodile still had a Desert La Spada for Gum Gum Storm just as Doflamingo had the 16 Sacred Bullets of the Assassin: God Thred and a Spider Web for extra Defense ready for the King Kong Gun. Why should the Main Character be the only one to have good ideas and come uo with things in a fight?

Stereotypical shonen anime fans wanted a rage, badass and anger powerup. Oda wanted something they didn't like. So he gave Luffy's transformation to be about joy and freedom. He's the goat.

The animation is so true to Luffy's character. S/O to the Tom and Jerry animator for this episode it 100% fits. From the very beginning Luffy has always been silly, and even when he is losing fights he is always smiling and laughing.. so Gear 5 bringing all this out and the animation fully encapsulating Luffy as cartoony and laughing.. it's so true to him. Kaido is so confused at this point and I love how kaido in those few minutes is just absolutely being rag dolled and bodied!

Luffy buffing up and throwing Kaido around is reminiscent of Tom and Jerry. Definitely the most unique transformation in all of anime and one of my favorites, Luffy bouncing around and laughing like a nutcase had me laughing like one too.

This transformation is iconic because it is so different. It is different from the same repetitive power-up seen in Shounen anime. When I first heard about Gear 5 I thought Luffy was gonna become a demon but this transformation will pave the way for future power-ups to not just be about rage. Out of all the genius things oda has come up with Joyboy is 100% in the top 3 if not #1 cause of the massive foreshadowing of nika and how it changes the canon lore moving forward without retconning a thing while also answering past questions specifically why shanks wanted that fruit in the first place. Also the powers it gives Luffy is something that hasn’t been done before in anime giving a character Toon Force essentially, which was a bold move cause manga/anime is all about exaggerating everything to its limit while being flashy and old school cartoons are all about the goofy and wild Rubberhose movements so to combine both makes some of the most manic animation to ever Grace the screen!

To be fair the government did send in their big guns at Luffy and his crew but because of pure luck and the connections he has to certain characters he managed to escape. Smoker let him go because his father helped him. Aokji let him go because of the garp connection. Garp obviously let him go. Kuma let him go because of the dragon connection (and Zoro of course). Kuma and Rayleigh also helped him escape from kizaru. Ivankov helped him in impel down because of his dragon connection. Luffy just kept slipping away from them.

TOON FORCE LUFFY!! LET'S GOOOO!!!! On another note, did they really expect Luffy to be "possessed" by JoyBoy? JoyBoy always came across as a title, not an actual persons being. Also... This is probably one of the most unique transformations I think I've ever seen in any anime. Anytime we see a transformation or power up, the protagonist ends up being all serious. But Luffy is happy as hell! That's an amazing twist on the typical Shonen fight.

Also I think most of the popular transformation scenes happen with anger or the weight of another friend being hurt or killed this is all Luffy it really is unique because he was even confused as to how he can even stand up plus if let's say nami had died and Luffy pulls up with this style of power up it would kill the impact of losing someone

@@bluebeeper9811 The closest thing I can think of to this transformation is probably Bleach, when Ulquiora kills Ichigo and he goes full on Vasto Lorde, but the differences are still pretty big because Luffy doesn't lose himself to his power and come across as a problem for everyone around him.

​@@cripple1791how is g5 similar to vasto lorde? Thst was ichigo getting possessed by his hollow and becoming a whole diff person and was triggered by him santing to protect orihime. The only similarity is that both of them happen after the mc "died"

They got an animator from disney on this, perfect match for Luffy's power too

This reaction makes me cry every time, so I feel I need to thank you! The main reason being that Luffy - Joyboy - represents freedom and laughter and...joy. Seeing Oda create this character who is the personification of these ideas and then seeing these ideas being inflicted upon people both in the story and through reactors like yourself is so incredibly inspiring and powerful. You didn't realize it when you were reacting, I'm sure, but your laughter embodied the spirit of Joyboy and, by extension, the spirit of One Piece. So, so beautiful.

The comment about it making you FEEL the joy is so on point. It's almost impossible to hear those drums and not want to dance. So hype I think it kicked me into a manic episode.

Idk how i feel because i loved snake mans badass form, Black and red aestetic / slick hair and haki / totally ripped luffy I just imagine one of luffys final form would be a slick raidboss form like that Gear 5 was something i never imagined but lets look back to gear 3 for example, he was always blowing his arms and body up like in the old cartoons, everything he has done replicated to an extend old cartoons, this wasnt an asspull It just fits
