Årsgång - The Yearly Walk

This video will be about the divination method called Årsgång, from Swedish folk traditions. Enjoy it and stay safe out there!
In Swedish folk traditions, particularly within Trolldom, specific times of the year are auspicious to obtain magical power and/or magical gifts. Sometimes performing a ritual at a particularly powerful time of the year is enough to obtain magical power, and that is what the practice of Årsgång (yearly-walk) is all about: to obtain magical power, by deliberate circumambulation of a church or home, a practice known as “Walking the Year’s Walk” (sw: att gå årsgång). Årsgång consists of the circumambulation of a building or area in a prescribed manner, after which divinatory or healing powers were bestowed. The procedure of walking or running counter-clockwise about the church or home in order to see portents in the windows afterwards was a common method of divination. It was common that on some portentous day, someone with the requisite fortitude ran a prescribed number of times counter-clockwise around the house or the church in order to know of future events. As Gustaf Ericsson writes, walking once around the house was sufficient to determine who of the household would not live out the year:
“On Christmas Eve, you go counter-clockwise around the house, and when you’ve gone one circuit, you stand still and look in through the window then everybody is sitting and eating dinner. Then, if anyone appears headless, then it’s certain that he’ll due within the course of a year. To be even more certain, three people should secretly take counsel and each go his own way. But there are few who dare to experiment with such doings.”
The ritual of walking the years walk was usually performed at midnight on special holidays such as Christmas Eve, New Years Eve, or Maundy Thursday in Holy Week. Sometimes the vision of the future was only fleeting, and normal vision returned relatively quickly, but at other times, the effect on the seeker was more permanent, and endowed him or her with an ongoing gift to divine futures, illnesses and cures.

What's really interesting about this is where I live, there's a few areas that's just a bunch of conjoining area full of relics like ancient large walls and medieval building amongst all the new builds and big stretches of road. If you travel north from the town centre than those roads and ruins start with infamous roundabout that has a plaque vault and a tower in the middle of it, it's known for spooky flashes. Plenty of people going about their commute may be doing a practice like this without knowing it.

The practice of årsgång counterclockwise around the church is very formiliar. It is in a contrary way still a (prehistoric) Frisian custom to send off a recently deceased person to the other side by means of 'rûngang'/rûn-gong' (going round). The barers of the coffin walk the deceased three times around the churchyard in the direction of the setting sun while the family follows in procession. The deceased person is then unable to walk back home. The practice survived because it's the 'proper way' to bury somebody. The path around the church was called the 'wi-thume' in old Frisian, the hallowed boundary. In olden days oaths were sworn on the threshold of the churchyard, lawspeakers (Asega's) would hold court there, near ancestors and on hallowed ground. A wider path on terpmounds with the church as the center (original the place of pagan worship before churches were erected there) were known as Oswei or Eeswei. Etymologically going back to 'Ans* way', the road of the gods in proto Old Frisian. Probably the 'rûngang' echos the old custom of holding processions between the villages and the fields with the images of the old gods like Ingi Frey, Freyja, Wōden, for whose cultic existence here, archeological evidence is established. Thank you for another great video. I found it just as my family and I returned from a 'rûngang' of our own in Kimswerd, to the churchyard where medieval ancestors once dwelled. Thanks and God Yule to you all!

I believe you are off a couple of days, seem you would want to perform this on the longest night of the year, which was this pass December 21st 2020 that came with Jupiter & Saturn conjoining at the mouth of the goat making it even a rarer event, here in the N. Lat they sat on the horizon a 7:00 PM or 1900 hrs but at that very moment a crossing was taking place, the Sun set at the edge of a "Lough" a body of water known as the Lagoon Nebula, a red spot also call Spiculum where you find Sag. 7&9 found drawing a line from the eye of Sagittarius to the heart of the scorpion Antares, house of goddess Serket /Circuit 'She who makes the throat breath' the words 'She Raise Dead' played backwards says Antares but back to Spiculum the red spot a Fuca(?) where you get Speculum, a Dr.'s tool use on a woman, where one enter this life from, the Sun/Son's crossing completes at midnight the 22nd. Now as 'She Raise Dead' played backwards says Antares "Mother Cups" says Spiculum, útiseta is of two words, úti means useful and seta is from 7 but SETA means Bristles, stiff hair, Seth is the pathfinder through the underworld. Setae is the hair on the earthworm that eat the dead. útiseta would mean your making use of your 7th sense and your hair stand on end. Maybe one day I tell you the rest. 22/7=3.142=Pi

Yet intuition guided me at winter-solstice and I went to visit my near ’seita’ stone and indeed I walked three circles around this great stone counter-clockwise and played little symbals along and recited praises for life.. Yeh.. Life shines in everywhere.. 🔥🔥🔥 Blessings from Finland 🙏

Hi Arith, I wanted to ask you a question here about runes because your videos are old and having discovered you recently, I thought you wouldn't see this one. My question: some people say that when you draw a rune, if it's on its reverse side (not visible) it's a negative prediction, is it true? I've seen your videos about runes and you only talk about the inverted symbols. Thank you in advance! P.S.: Your videos are at the top and I don't regret having discovered you, go on! Well done!

  • 3 жыл бұрын

Thank you for your comment, and thank you for your support! Well, divination methods concerning the runes are not historically accurate. For instance, my own videos on each rune is a more esoteric approach and my own interpretation. Every academic video I do on the runes I put it on a different folder, the one "Scandinavian and Viking Studies". Next year I might start demosntranting divination methods with the runes, but know that all of those are not historically accurate. Just a modern adaptation. I have a video that might better answer your question and others you may have concerning the runes, here it is: kzread.info/dash/bejne/nZ1l0K6xfMeplrQ.html&t

So the times change and so does the journey. Perhaps we can adjust these practices to account for modern life with its constant noise and light pollution. Perhaps these things can be tidar too? Anyway I am able to walk to a cemetery and I will do this on New Year's Eve. The walk itself will be through suburbs but I can try to discern the signs and omens anyway. Thank you for this video! Yet another topic I didn't know I wanted to hear about. I think I will go do this walk next week myself, but I wanted to ask if you can bring a small light? I am a bit clumsy and there are a lot of tree roots on the path I will take. It seems a light might disrupt the natural surroundings a bit and perhaps cloud the information but I don't want to fall over and make a bunch of noises either, haha. I hope you will see this and let me know if you have the time. Blessings and good health to you!

Talking about dreams, I don't understand this whole idea of symbolism. Well, I do understand the idea tgat things in dreams means something. What I don't understand is why anyone came up with this theory. When I dream what I dream us exactly what it is. I don't remember dreaming often, but when I do the events in the dream occur exactly as they did in the dream. Usually at a point in the future. Except for the one time when my first love died. I dreamed if that at the same time as it happened. The whole sitting out is reminding me of rales and legends from around Europe about churches where if you sit on the steps on certain nights at midnight a procession of spirits will pass by reciting the names if those to die in the coming year. There's usually a condition that if you hear your own name you will die bwfore the year is out.

Is this not blasphemy against the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob? Or at the very least displeasing in the Lords sight? Playing the game Year walk brought me here and I became intrigued when i found out this is based off real practice. But cant go against the creator here. There was a king of Judah named manessah that I thought of after learning about arsgang. He was very wicked in the sight of God and it tells how he did many things evil including "observing times" or likely augury in other words. Any other christians out there that have thought about this?
