I think what makes your sound warmer than others who use the 57/ribbon setup is that you run both mics at the same volume versus just using the ribbon to fill in a little. Honestly, the tones you get are fantastic given the relatively simple setup you use!

Best video I’ve seen in a long time

It finally clicked with me, how phasing issues occur, when you described the importance of the distance of the mic capsules.

Thanks for doing this, it's exactly what I was looking for. I recently picked up the Sterling Audio ST170 Ribbon Mic and I'm pairing it with a 57 so this video was definitely helpful.

thats always been my favourite just that the royer is a little steep on the price but definitly the perfect combo. that filtertron on a strat also sounds amazingly tight. very nice touch! i have it on one of my tele's but never actualy seen it on a strat. very nice indeed.

Great video. Royer makes a clip that enables you to run both mics with only one stand, btw.

Great tips! We must be long lost cousins. If the intent is to basically blend a straightforward SM57 tone with something more transparent with little to no room sound, a large diaphragm condenser microphone or even a Sennheiser e906 would be a good alternatives given the cost of the R121. Personally, I blend an SM57 with an A/DA GCS-3 between the amp and cab... I like the way DI-cab simulators put a little more emphasis on the amp given how much speakers color tone.

When I'm playing live at a bar I have an Sm57. I'd look into other 🎤 for a better sound but after hearing videos of this thousand dollar mic, I feel like I could just eq the 57 to sound a little better. I don't feel good about spending nearly half of what the speakers and subs we play with cost. Thanks for the video

Thank you good sir! General question for all: Is it essential for a pre amp with the Royer 121? Would the gain boost from a focusrite interface be sufficient power/signal to noise ratio to use it effectively?

Would be curious to hear this same setup but with he 57 off axis. I feel like the top end of the 57 is a touch too overpowering (just). The Royer sounds great! I just did a recording experiment yesterday (quarantine blues) and tried changing mic placement and polar patterns (on a budget Tube condenser). Huge difference with just little changes. I totally forgot to try off axis placement though. Oh and I need better mics... A Royer and and SM57 seems ideal, or even a Royer and a MD421 maybe. I'm not hearing my amp recorded like i do when I'm standing next to it. Trying to capture that. Needs more bottom - Ribbon mic.

Hey Shawn, I love the fact that you compensate for level differences while demonstrating the soloed tracks. That makes a very honest comparison. Well thought out demo, thanks for that! Do you have your mics on a bar of some sorts to help with alignment consistency while moving? A slightly bigger shot of your mic stand contraptions might have been interesting, too.

Thanks so much for tuning in! In general, I haven't really bothered with any dual mount systems because I know that set up so well. I just use typical boom stands and mic clips.

On the one hand, this is great advice. On the other, does anyone here really think that if recorded these jams with the voice memo app on his iPhone that it wouldn't sound great? I don't.

Great video Shawn. How does this mic combo sound going straight in to an audio interface? The TG-2 pre amp is quite costly.

Hi Shawn, do you ever use the 300 ohm setting on the TG-2 for the 57, or does it take away some of the bite? I'm guessing its always off for the Royer. Thanks!

Forgive me if I missed it, but did you say how far away from the speaker you typically put the mics? I saw the detailed explanation on the horizontal placement in reference to the dust cover, but may have missed the depth distance of the mics. Thanks a ton!

Thanks for taking the time to show us your setup, Shawn. I am sure you get questions on it all the time as your sound is consistently killer. Question: I know in the past you have used the two notes and/or IRs for the speaker/mic portion. In what situations do you use either or?

For the most part, I'll always try and use my mic setup because it's just where my musical world is. The Torpedo is great but as good as IR's are getting, they aren't better than the real thing. At least not yet. ;) I'll use the Torpedo when I'm going through something like my personal pedal board or maybe things that aren't so product specific. I'll use my Torpedo in live situations when I know the mic or monitor set up is going to be less than desirable because I know it will be consistent and sound great. My Torpedo is really good for session work as well when I've got to move quickly or record at lower volumes. Thanks for tuning in and for the question!

love the vids! I use a couple of 121's for my amps and have around 15 sm57's! Hah! From drums to vocals to amps, 57's are great and inexpensive. Have you ever tried using other side of R121 (reverse your polarity)? I love it for low volume studio night work as it's brighter. Not too many people mention this little hidden gem on the 121. Thanks for all the informative vids Shawn!

I really would love to see a video of how you set your Delay and reverb when recording. I have been trying to figure out your slap back sound for a while now with no luck.

Thanks for watching Andrew! I would definitely look at a ribbon mic. Royer is offering the R-10 for around 499 street and I think the SE Voodoo ribbons are around 399. If you have the means go for the R121 but you honestly would be in great shape with an R-10.

Nice placement demo for those not in the know there, Shawn. I tell people that to my old cloth ears, the 121 has nice hair and butt, the 57 has nice teeth, sonically speaking.

Hey Andy, thanks for watching! For the most part I use my 2x12 bog cab. I've been using Eminence CV75 speakers for a while now but I'm thinking about checking out some of the new Celestion stuff.

It's an Aussie Engineering staple, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"... Now, can you take everything you just did and said and put it in an impulse response, LOL! Cheers Shawn, great clip love the chandler drives also..

Thanks for watching!! Mic distance can really vary depending on the cabinet. On my Bogner 2x12 closed back I keep that set up back about 4 inches so that I don't get too much low-end​ response from the R121. On my open back 1x12 cab I keep them closer. Around 2 inches.

Hi Shawn, Great tutorial and amazing tones! Right now I’m recording at home using an Apogee ONE audio interface which has only one mic input. So, I have no chance to record two mics at the same time. I own an SM57. With this limitation what would be your choice to record with only one mic? (stick with the SM57 or buy another thing?).Thanks.

There are so many great condenser mics on the market but it's hard to beat a tried and true SM57 in my opinion. Heil does a mic called the PR20 that I really love. I used it for a tour with Carrie Underwood. It's basically a 57 but sounds bigger with a sweeter top end but still retains that mid punch. That's the only mic I've considered over the SM57. Shawn, what's your default distance from the grill cloth? 2 inches? ... btw, I use the same exact method for acoustics with an R122V and KM84. The instruments are all different sizes so I just blend those two mics for EQ. Like you said, there's a lot of value in not changing the setup.

I usually start at about 2 inches from the grill cloth but it depends on the cab and the room. I'm closer to 3 inches away from my Bogner closed 2x12 cab as it has quite a bit of low end.

It's a very subtle difference between the two.

I'm getting some strange kind of compression from my sm 57 when using crunch tones ( from various pedals: jhs, fulltone ocd, boss blues driver). Seems like the mic isn't able to take the pressure from the speaker. Any suggestion?

Well there can be a lot to go through to really solve the problem sometimes. It could be the preamp you're using as well as how your monitors sound and feel. My world is on the mics so much now that I'm completely used to how they feel. I found over the years that I was going to have to compromise my ideals when it comes to comparing the cab in the room to the cab on the mic listening through monitors. When you're sitting or standing right next to the guitar cab you're playing through, it's pretty hard to beat. As great as mics and preamps can be there will always be a variable difference. You could have a funky sounding 57 but there also could be a lot of other factors to go through.

Look into the R10. Its only $500 vs $1200 and in some demos, you can't really tell it from the 121. I just got the R10 yesterday and setting up today.

I'm amazed that you have no noise on the recordings even when you are using a lot of overdrive or distortion?? How do you manage that??

For the most part, I do my best to turn out of any field hum related to my pickups. Sometimes just shifting or turning one direction or the other get's the hum or buzz sorted out. I habitually roll off my volume control when I'm not playing so that helps as well. In this video I pretty much stick to the filtertron pickup which is a humbucker. As far as hiss and noise floor, I just make sure gains are set proper across the board. At the end of the day, noise is going to be a factor in tone. I've found that if I manage to get rid of all of it, it's usually at the ultimate sacrifice of tone. Thanks for watching!

If you haven't gotten the Royer Axemount yet, it's a game changer.

Great video Shawn! When you use these in an actual mix, do you usually end up panning them to opposite sides? Or do you (or whoever mixes the tracks) usually treat them as one combined tone? Thanks in advance! Subscribed. Great channel.

I used a set of Event 20/20 monitors for like 15 years or so and really didn't have any reason to switch but they were finally starting to give up on me or at least the power amps were. It was a friend of mine who's ears I really trust that told me to look into the KRK V8's. They sound killer for the money to me and as a guitar player I felt like the mid guitar frequencies were coming across in a bit more honest. I'm very impressed with them. They do just fine but always check the SPL specs to be sure. I've used an R121, AT 4081 and the Shure KSM 313 on tour.

Thanks. I'm looking to decide between those two. Application is with a 57 on a Risson AP40 with a 4X10 cab... using an Anderson and a 335,mainly at CC Sonora, Ca. sanctuary.

I really like it as an alternative to the 57...

Personally I use the Royer 121 with a Senheiser MD409 and it is killer for heavier guitar sounds. The 409 sounds much better than the 57... my humble opinion

My personal mic setup for drums is oddly like really similar to some guy named Glyn Johns? He claims it couldn't really my personal signature because he "developed" it in the "60's" -he clearly doesn't understand what I mean... What I mean is I'm pretending it's my personal signature but I'm not telling anybody that I'm pretending.. Cuz why should the unspoken rules of professionals and gentelman apply? I'm making videos here! and he's dead.. i think. There's no harm in making everybody think I invented this mic placement and mic setup that is available in a purchasable mic clip.

Súper great vid as always! I’m using booth too. How do you cut the frequencies ? Do you cut at 180 or so? Or not EQ are used at all?

I don't use EQ, for the most part, I just balance the two mic outputs and am careful about low end proximity with the Royer.
