In most militaries, an officer is there to motivate the troops to fight. In the Marine Corps, an officer is there, to keep the Marines from committing war crimes.

Former US Marine Infantry here. They *hammer* these legends into your grape in bootcamp. Deservingly so. I was wia in afghan but, fortunately, in wounded warrior battalion they choose to send me and some others to Normandy, Omaha, and Utah Beach, Pointe du Hoc, and of course, Belleau Wood. Shit gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. The trenches and fighting holes are still there. Then there’s the rows and rows and rows of crosses and some stars of David (edit). You truly feel insignificant in the presence of such greater men. Semper Fi

I was a recipient of the so called Peace Dividend and all my predecessors and those following me are VETS. I feel like I was short changed because I had 'academic possibilities" as my high school counselor put it. Yeah, boot camp was what gavve me a love of history. In school, history was merely memorizing names and dates for a test. to get a grade on a piece of paper. Boot camp classtime gave the Marines of our past a story, and a reason for our traditions. I have been a fan of learning about history ever since.

As an American mother of two grown sons, I am proud of Daly and our history but glad my sons couldn’t join the military until they were at least 18. I’m relieved they were too young to be in the wars pre and post 9/11/01. In my paternal family history a male relative has fought in every US war from the revolutionary war up until my dad fought in Vietnam as an army intelligence officer. It allowed our family to live in Germany and visit much of Europe afterwards and the army paid for him to go to law school and be a JAG officer. The traveling army posts gave my parents and my siblings and I a more worldly knowledge. I can’t go in to everything my dad did in his career but he accomplished amazing things. Thank you for your service sir and my sympathy to you and your family who must have been worried sick. As our allies know Americans recognize the sacrifices and bravery of our allies!

Ok, he missed on a few things. Dan Daly was I believe 25 when he joined. He didn't fight alone in the boxer rebellion. He was the gunner, but gunners have 2 man crews. There were 2 machine gun crews to fight the boxers. Daly's assistant gunner did die. The other gunner died, and the other assistant gunner helped Dan Daly. He fully deserved the medal of honor for his duty. Daly deserved 4 medals of honor. Also the Fat Electrician was slightly wrong about 1 medal of honor as well. You got clusters for each medal of honor over 1.

The medal of honor is an exceptionally rare award considering that the US has given out 3,536 medals of honor since 1863 and the US has been involved in an unconfirmed and debated number of conflicts since 1863 but, it is well into the hundreds since it is currently embroiled in between 15 and 112 armed conflicts depending on who defines "conflict" and "involved". The victoria cross came around in 1856 and since then, the medal has been awarded 1,358 times while England has been involved in less than 100 conflicts since the Crimean war which is what the vc was created for. England has only given out 15 vcs since ww2 and 4 were given to Australians hence that 11 number. The medal per conflict ratio is quite a bit less for the medal of honor. Murica has just been doing a hell of a lot more war the last 90 years than Inglerland. Currently 230k thousand US Soldiers stationed across 159 or 178 countries depending on who defines "country" we are huge on the whole countries that other countries don't recognize thing so thats a lot of opportunity for exceptional and terrible things to happen.

It's the same here in the Marine Corps. The Army, Navy, and Air Force hand out medals like candy at Halloween. My buddy, who lived across the street, joined the Air Force in 1979. He got married in 1980 and wanted me to be his best man. Át the time I'd been in 4 years and was a Sergeant. He was an Airman first class with 1 year in. He had a stack of 4 ribbons to my one.

Most of the "fruit salad" is more career achievements (a lot of them rote) than "medals" as they are understood. The Valor awards- Purple Heart, Bronze and Silver Stars, Lifesaving Medal, DSC or DFC, and "The Button" - Medal of Honor, are the only ones that count beyond "you put in the time, and you didn't screw up completely". Combat Infantryman's Badge is also one I'd pay attention to.

What's even more crazy is that in many battles, when a side suffers even say 10-20% K/W, you look at those numbers and a lot of people would retreat or wait for backup. At Belleau Wood, the US Army and Marines suffered somewhere around 60% losses combined. It was an extremely costly victory.

One of the main reasons for the Chinese people's anger at Western missionaries in particular was a result of the end of the Opium Wars. Britain and France had cooperated to defeat the Chinese and force concessions from them. While British concessions had mainly been focused on ending the trade imbalance caused by China's policy of only accepting silver as payment, the French focused on religious issues. Namely, they wanted to stop the persecution of Chinese Christians and of Catholic Missionaries by Chinese authorities. Their solution? They demanded that the Chinese Imperial government pass a law making Christians immune to criminal prosecution (i.e. they cannot be charged with a crime), and the Chinese government had no choice but to agree. The result was that practically overnight, every two-bit bandit, rapist and murderer "converted" to Christianity and immediately became above the law. This went on for years where you could get away with any crime, no matter how heinous, by simply wearing a crucifix around your neck and carrying some sort of documentation showing that you were a Christian. So to the average Chinese citizen who had no experience with Christianity otherwise, it looked a lot like Christianity was a religion of pure evil spreading chaos and malice everywhere it went. This is why Chinese rebels targeted missionaries and Chinese Christians with particular hatred. It is also why there is a deep distrust for Christianity to this very day in Chinese culture.

"Surely they would just gun them all down, so long as they don't close the distance." It is obvious that this man has never really familiarized himself with Pre ww1 machine guns. They were not like modern ones where you can just hold the trigger down until either your ammo can runs dry or the barrel melts (Which happens far more quickly than many would think. As a Marine, he should be well aware of how quickly you can heat a barrel up to the point that it begins to melt causing the slug to jam in the barrel and the gun to explode. Machine guns have quick releases and spare barrels for this very reason.) These early machine guns were very prone to jamming and assorted failures without the heat issue. They always worked in pairs or more or at minimum had many riflemen with them. That way they could maintain fire even in the rather likely event of a weapon jam. 200 Dudes would be dicey with a modern gun. With a early gun, well I would place much on those odds.

In boot camp, we were allowed 3 cigarettes a day. Each time, the platoon fell in, standing the butts, at parade rest. We were required to recite the following, as loudly as possible: "Sir!
