Bro i tipped a chick in a pub in the UK after she served us an amazing meal and gave us the best service i ever had anywhere and she was so shocked she almost cried. She tried to say she couldnt accept it but i told her I am American and she deserved it and it would be offense to me to refuse. She gave me a hug. Such a sweet girl. I hope she is well

I personally wouldn't have said it would be offensive to me, I feel that may have put some undue pressure on her. but explaining it's part of our dining culture and she deserved the recognition of a job well done was certainly a good thing.

Prices for things here in the US definitely depend on where you are. Some states, things are rather cheap, while others can be quite expensive. It would be interesting to view a video about differences between the 50 states, as a state like Maine can be quite different from a place like California.

The only reason for the date thing that I can see is how we say it. "It's June 24tth (2021)". That's just the general order people say it (at least, from everyone I've met). I don't think I've met anyone that naturally says "it's the 24th of June (2021)". The first option just flows better. And presumably, because we say it like that, our writing convention changed too.

Fried pizza made me spit my drink. Now THAT, that's a level of culinary audacity that'd do America proud. Bravo. Also, tips are a different thing when you're at a little mom n' pop restaurant. Olive Garden is definitely trying to shake you down, but at family run restaurants, the tip system helps pay the employees more than the restaurant itself could afford. And a lot of the time, the difference in that wage goes into your portion and ends up on your plate. It really helps small restaurants to put out an incredible meal while keeping the lights on and still getting the servers paid.

So the free refill on basic sodas, teas (iced), and coffees (hot) in the same way that ice water is free to begin with offering free refills is simple because the single glass of soda is not enough for a diner to ration through waiting for their food to come, eat their meal, and then endure the time waiting for the rest of the group to finish eating and conversing. Because of this the overall pleas of the experience is diminished and is reflected when calculating the tip. ALSO it encourages some of the group to order extra items like desserts and crafts drinks if they don’t see that their opposite at the table is slowly sucking on ice cubes to keep from getting a dry mouth

My best guess for why we do the “MM/DD/YYYY” thing is because when verbally saying the date, we’d usually say “January 1st, 20XX” as opposed to “The 1st of January, 20XX.” So naturally, the way we said the date became the way we wrote the date.

Okay to answer the Month/Day/Year and Day/Month/Year conundrum: It makes sense when you speak it out loud. If you're telling someone the day it feels more natural to say something like April 16th 2021 rather than the 16th of April 2021. That's why it's Month/Day/Year in the US.

From wealthy family members trying to keep clean, to my Brazilian/German best friend and his family, I got enough funny looks to cause me to just take shoes off by default. I get looks for that as well and have even had other Americans act somewhat offended when I remove my shoes, as if to say I feel they're overly sensitive or something (seems ironic). I personally wear house shoes at my place now, so my foyer looks a bit more Japanese lol.

The most common theory about the date thing in the US is that it's emulating the most used spoken order. For example: This video came out on May 15th, 2021. Translating it one-to-one would be 05-15-2021, whereas going DD/MM/YYYY requires flipping the order you would take to say it.

What is even more strange to foreigners is just how diverse and complex the USA really is, its grown common to see taxis and garbage trucks and package/food delivery services all have a more hands on approach, deliveries are dropped by doors, garbage picked up from the street, and in the case of taxis well hop in and they'll take you where you wanna go, where as where I live there are no taxis and no citizen servicing garbage retrieval, if we go somewhere WE drive there or we don't go, when our garbage cans fill up, we either pile it somewhere nearby to wait until there is enough to load onto a pickup truck and haul to the landfill ourselves, we have to worry about loading, hauling, unloading, and cleaning up after it ourselves, or we just throw it in a burn barrel and burn it, if it can be burnt and then shovel off the ashes. As for package delivery, they usually just leave it at our mailbox, some are near the houses, in my case its a quarter mile trek down and back up an old jeep trail that isn't fit for a log sled, and there is no Uber eats or Dominos delivery here, if we want "Micky D's" or pizza, we have to drive 30+ miles there and 30+ miles back, an average trip usually consisting of roughly 2 hours travel time, just to get a burger and fries!

The problem is that not everything is taxed, and not all things are taxed at the same rate. In MA food [including candy and soda] is not taxed if bought in a store, but if you buy a sandwich containing the untaxed elements the sandwich will be taxed. Clothes costing less than $100 are not taxed in MA, but are taxed in other states. In MA there is one state sales tax, but in some states, cities and counties add extra sales taxes and some states have different exemptions or none. In MA restaurants there is a meal/sales tax of %6.25 to which you are expected to add a tip of between 10 to 20 percent. Because MA is a major tourist destination, many restaurants add a service charge [especially for groups] to the bill so if this is 10% add an extra 5% to 10%. The US is especially complicated because it is an 18th Century federation, more like the EU than like a single country. Massachusetts, by the way, has the oldest written Constitution in continuous use, dating from the revolutionary regime that usurped British authority in 1774, which wrote the current constitution in 1780, and continued governing. some parts of our government are just rebranded colonial institutions. OH should be sure to visit the Statehouse and tour the historic sites. As a former Royal Marine, a visit to the USS Constitution should be particularly interesting.

My theory about the American date format is because there are fewer months than there are days, so it's ordered by the quantity of the date segment rather than the most actively changing segment. Which, if you think about it is kinda funny considering countries want the most commonly changing numbers to be read left to right while time formats are the opposite, with the most commonly changing numbers are last.

I remember going to Hungary and getting in trouble for taking a shower! I stood rinsed, washed, and then rinsed off. Then got yelled at fo it. i was supposed to turn on the water rinse, then turn off, then wash, then turn back on and rinse off! Also toilet's don't flush with an automatic gallon and there was a little shelf where the water should be! I had to rake my waste off and then flush it down so gross! I also remember hookers and brothels where like everywhere. I drove down the Auto-bahn from the Czech Republic into Slavakia and there were 2 mobile homes with naked women standing outside waving in truckers it was crazy! Glad your here mate keep up the videos good on ya!

#20 Not using our vacation hours: I believe it’s due the Puritans who were some of the first immigrants to the North America from Europe. The “Puritan work ethic” has been ingrained in our culture ever since. It’s also been reinforced by generations of immigrants who were used to working backbreaking hours in very labor intensive jobs who saw opportunities to get ahead if they just put the work in.

In 1986 I was a Florida State University student, and did my student teaching from January to April in London as part of the London Study program. I took out a student loan to go, and it was one of the best choices I've ever made! I remember wanting to get something to eat when I first arrived, but couldn't identify anything on the menu, so I ordered what the man standing ahead of me ordered. I hadn't studied the money either, I'm ashamed to admit, so I for the first day I had to offer my coins to the cashier and let her take what I owed. I have to admit I was embarrassed by some very loud and pushy Americans that I saw while I was there. Since it took a good amount of money to travel then, I attributed their bad behavior to being spoiled by wealth, because money can often make people self-centered and rude, and I believed these unfortunate Americans were such examples of that. But who knows? I visited Edinburgh Scotland during a long weekend, and it was an AMAZINGLY beautiful place, even though it was cold and misty most of the time. The green rolling hills, the lochs, the cobblestone streets, and the castle were all magical...like being in a fairy tale! But more than once I was reduced to awkward idiocy trying to understand the English as it was spoken by the lovely people I met there. (I was a dumb kid who didn't prepare nearly enough!) I learned first hand the truth of the old saying that America and Great Britain are two countries separated by a common language. Scotland is a breathtakingly gorgeous country with so many warm and friendly people! SO worth visiting! I sure enjoyed this video, OriginalHuman! Thx for sharing! ❤️ 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

In re: dates. It's because we started with Month-dd-yyyy, eventually becoming MON-dd-yyyy, where in the month was fully spelled out or abbreviated to three letters, and that was in place when we started having to record the month as numbers because of computers. Here in the Pacific Northwest "December 11th" sounds a lot less formal than "the 11th of December", leading to DEC-11-2013, instead of joining in the fun for 11-12-13. (We still did enjoy 11-12-13, though, just in November...)

The thing with tips. You could have one large group come in and spend $400 in an hour. That would be $40 in a single hour, most tables you will only make a few dollars but some people will tip more than 20% and the servers can usually make more money than they would with a set wage from the company. I believe restaurants are obligated to make sure their servers are making at least minimum wage.

My best guess for why we use mm/dd/yyyy, is because when someone asks you what the date is in real life, most people respond with mm/dd/yyyy. "What is your birthday?" "January 2nd 1980" would be the common response. Not very common in USA to say "My birthday is the 2nd of January, 1980"

The reason a lot of people here in the US are against free healthcare is because nothing is really "free." The difference is letting the government provide universal healthcare that everyone pays for via taxes, or having private insurance which covers your healthcare on a need-based basis. Public programs like free healthcare, free college, etc. are all similarly controversial since they would typically raise the taxes here significantly. Everyone wants what they think is best for the country, but many people just what is "best" differently.

I know, old comment, but I just wanted to add that while yes, taxes would raise, but your expenses for health insurance would drop more then your taxes increase because of the simple fact that private insurance is profit driven, public insurance is not. The biggest reason I see people being against public insurance is that they distrust the government. While its true that public insurance should cost less, many believe that the government would screw us over and it would just cost the same or more, while also having worse quality care. I disagree with this, but its kinda impossible to change someones trust in the government. Especially when it shows incompetency so often.

The thing about those working for tips is... they usualy earn way more than they would if they worked for minimum wage and, since tiping with money is really hard to track, most will lie about the amount they received and be taxed a lot less than they should and it's extremely hard to prove. So the tip culture, like you call it, is actually pretty good for everyone. The business pay a basic wage to the employe but keep more money than if they paid minimum wage, the employe get basic wage from the store but earn the biggest part of their earning through tips and weeks of $1800 or not rare, that's a whole lot of money.

Servers DO make a living wage, and the employer is not cheating them. It is how our system developed. The employer COULD pay more, and then the price of food would be higher to compensate. They would know their hourly wage is guaranteed and would have less incentive to be extra friendly and attentive (servers in uk/Europe aren't nearly as kind and attentive). Tipping gives the customer the chance to provide instant feedback in the amount we tip also.

Fun fact but in case if you don't know but the reason in this country tips are appreciated is because they were introduced in 1938 new deal because the us at the time was going chaos at the time and were going through a great depression people needed ways to make money so tipping became the new normal and I do agree that restaurants do need to pay people more regardless how many tips the worker gets as well as that I also agree that the sells tax is a little annoying because you don't know the exact price you pay for food and supplies it wouldn't be bad thing if they included that might also make it easier to figure it out and how much exact change you need or money for that stuff

The whole pharmacy is a convenience store is because of the way US cities are planned, especially after the Interstates. In the inner city between "downtown" and "the suburbs" the poorer the area is, the more likely it is to see a pharmacy-convenience than a smaller pharmacy that just does medicine (OTC and prescription.) More affluent areas are more likely to have neighborhood pharmacies rather than chains, and can count on courteous customers and get by on just the medicine. You'll find pharmacy-convenience often in "food deserts" where the only options available on foot are convenience stores and chain fast food.
