Royal Enfield Shotgun 650 Review

Ойын-сауық

Please note ; it was a very windy day, so there is a fair bit of wind noise on the open roads. New mic positioning is still a work in progress.
Today, we have the privilege to take the new Royal Enfield Shotgun 650 out for a ride. We are the first to ride this, so no silly antics, just a sensible ride. It is such a great bike, and as I was really enjoying myself, the video has ended up being longer than it should be, hey ho !
Please stay until the end, where you can see some close up photo's, and the spec sheet's for both the Shotgun 650 and the Super Meteor 650 for comparison. By the way, with a really low 795mm seat height, it is perfect for shorter riders too.
If you enjoy this video, please hit the like button, and leave a comment.
Thanks for Watching.

Great film Ian. I bought my bronze chrome Classic 350 from Crewe Motorcycles last summer and I’m enjoying every moment. Your ride was pretty much the one I did at the weekend being local to Leighton Hospital. And yes, the roads are atrocious! Keep up the good work mate 👍🏼. Paul.

That’s brilliant Paul, so nice to hear you are enjoying your Classic 350. I really can’t figure out why so much money has been wasted on the new roads around the hospital. I have no doubt that in time we will understand why Flowers Lane was re-routed, but currently I am at a loss 🤔😂. Don’t get me started on the off camber, tight roundabouts 😂. I wouldn’t like to be a HGV driver having to negotiate the one before Pyms Lane traffic lights 🤦‍♂️. Thanks for your support, and please mention me to Roger next time you are in the shop. Cheers

You have hit the nail on the head Sid. It is a perfect balance…….now if only they had shiny exhausts 🤔😂. I actually priced them up on Hitchcock’s, looking at about £1000 for stainless downpipes and silencers. TEC are cheaper at under £600 for full system. This is providing they are exactly the same as the Super Meteor, which they look to be.

I took one out on test on Wednesday Ian, back to back with the Super Meteor and agree it's a brilliant bike , I prefer the Shotgun to the Super Meteor, the riding position is perfect and there is a difference in the feeling of the engine from my Interceptor I had , it feels notably smoother! Whatever they've done to it's brilliant. At the moment Enfield are making a buying decision very difficult with the choices on offer ! Cheers Mel 🍻

RE keep improving with every new model and this one seems to have taken another step in that direction. I like you like a bit of chrome on the bike and not really into the all black look but it each to their own. I am interested to see if a Classic 650 shows up sometime soon but no local dealer any more so would need to go to Edinburgh to check one out. The roads are truly awful and this past winter has taken another chunk out of the surfaces, meanwhile they happily spend zillions on bike lanes!!!! It a mental old world we live in.

A good review Ian! I am glad to hear that the fuelling is perfect on the new models. I like the 650s because they are so easy to ride, being moderately powered and with a slick gearbox. They will also cruise at 80 or 90 mph happily, look good, sound good and have a lot of character. The 650s lend themselves to modification also, without becoming too expensive. The Interceptor is still my favourite. 👍👍

I heard that there are BSIV and BSVI versions of the 650 engine and that they run on different fuels. I think that both of my bikes, 2019 and 2020 are the later BSVI version and they are both equally smooth. I am not sure what other variations there are.

I certainly will. I wanted to take my new shotgun down one of the roughest roads that we have here in Springfield, Oregon. I heard the suspension was quite stiff, but you seem to be going over a lot of bumps without any comment about a harsh ride. I ordered my stencil white last week and all of the bikes are shipped through Dallas Texas. Hopefully I’ll have mine within two weeks. FYI: you’ve got a great voice for making video logs.

I try and just talk like we are in the same bubble, if that makes sense 🤔😂, I am quite a shy person, with little confidence, but I enjoy making and sharing these vids. So it’s really nice to have feedback like this. As for the suspension, I wasn’t getting jarred out of the seat, on our very tired roads, and only really felt the unavoidable craters. I have a historic lower back problem, but felt fresh when I returned to the shop, so that’s a real positive.

Ian, I just got to see the Shotgun in real life yesterday. My first impression was it’s a very small bike. Kind of diminutive for my 6 foot frame. I’ve never rode such a small bike before. Also I was surprised at how stiff the seat is. I don’t know if you mentioned that but the one I sat on probably had the hardest seat I’ve ever experienced on a motorcycle. Got my deposit back.

Bit late to this one for some reason, anyway, thanks for the useful & interesting commentary about a truly desirable bike (at least, in my humble opinion). This design is close to my idea of a perfect cruiser, although I'd put a screen on it for long distances. Back in my day I would have called this (almost) a low-rider (as opposed to a chopper), & I can't be certain, but I think "bobber" might have originated with hard-tail, sprung single seat Harleys which bobbed up & down, as did the rider... but don't take my word for it, I didn't even bother googling it. 😅 Have a good evening & thanks again, always look forward to your thoughts on bikes. 👍

I'm 63 and a bit of a fatty😄. The Shotgun was surprisingly good! Super comfy ergonomics, although l too would raise the gear lever a bit. I road it at all speed limits and it surprised me how smartly it pulled. Only negative was the feeling at 70mph but then again it is a naked. Handling was really sweet too. Overall, l was really impressed. Got a Guzzi V7 booked for tomorrow weather permitting. Anyway, keep well & ride safe Ian. Regards, Mo 😊👍

Within about 10 miles l'd 'learnt' the bike and after my 1hr 15mins ride, l have to say, l thought it was fantastic!! Plenty enough power, handled so sweetly on some very twisty B roads. It even cruised nicely at 70/75mph with not much buffeting.... unlike the Shotgun. Loved it & it's tempting me. Go try one lan 😃. Regards, Mo 😊👍.

Very good review Ian. It’s a bike with very few faults if you can call them that. I’d have to change the clock layout to a single centrally mounted one with a white on black display. And maybe lighten it by using (dare I say it) plastic panels. I’ve not ridden one yet and though as you say, you can’t feel its weight when riding it, I’m sure that’s not the case when moving it about in the garage. Overall though it’s a nice looking bike. 👍

Thanks Nick. Yes manoeuvring about off the bike, is a bit weighty, but it is all low down, so easy enough if you put a bit of effort in. It is a bit heavier than the SM, but not really noticeable. I agree about moving the Speedo, it would be much better centrally mounted. I think changing the exhaust’s would save a chunk of weight. I've done the same with the rear seat on my Classic 350 by the way, ready made carrier eh! As for the roads down there, yeah the council need to stop paying themselves as much and spend some money on the bloody roads , and actually do something instead of just setting up phantom road works that p%&ss everybody off! 🙄 totally with you on that rant 😅. Re the bathtub Triumphs, all their twins were so fitted, from the 3TA to the T110, with only the Trophy and Bonneville not having them. As I mentioned, I am sure the Shotgun will be the base for the upcoming Classic 650, though I expect the Classic to be even heavier. The looks of the Shotgun, did have me rubbing my chin, but it rides superbly. Actually better than the Interceptor, in my opinion. Talking about the new Himi (and impending Scram version), I thoroughly enjoyed my ride on that. Last week, Ann asked me which of the RE’s I would buy, if I had the money ? I am still thinking about it 😂 too much choice 🙄 Cheers

First time I’ve seen one with the passenger seat on, looks good. Nice looking bike; I’m nitpicking here but I’d loose the tripper coz I have no need of it and have the speedo centrally mounted. Self cancelling indicators are great, had them on my 1980 Suzuki GS 1000 EN, odd that they never caught on. Sometimes the indictor doesn’t cancel at the first push of the button, that’s exactly why my inductors get left on, on occasions. I could defo see my self on one of these; wouldn’t chop Edna our beloved Inty in for one though. Agree with you about the zorsts. Which is a shame coz they look purposeful and I know they are designed to be quiet for Euro crap. Decent set of zorsts in unpainted stainless and jobs a winner. I noticed that the seat is mounted on a frame from under tank, and you can clearly see fresh air underneath. So would have think it could or should have been lowered a bit more. I only say this, as being 5 foot 4 and inside leg of 27 inches, I was on my very tip toes. With this tipping the scales at 240kg, it’s somewhat solid. I really like this. But due to abdominal issues, am on tippy tip toes and it’s 240kg weight. Will pass. Rebel 1100 as it’s lighter and I get both feet flat. Pity, as I really like this one 😢

Hi Ian, Just watched your enfield shot gun review. I was just wondering if it was your money which one of these three bikes would you purchase? The shot gun, the BSA or the Honda Hornet all roughly the same price, last time I looked the hornet was £7,300 0n the road so a really good price and you've ridden all 3 so I would be very interested to know your opinion and would you trade your trusty 350 in for any of them? I know the Honda is not a retro bike, but it still comes under roughly that price comparison, to me that seems a really conundrum as to which way you jump, I think my preference would be the Honda but like I said I would like to hear your opinion it and it's not just down to price it's about dealer network, warranty and after market price when it becomes used. I think the Honda would win again anyway, keep up the good work Pete

  • @ianhughesroyalenfield

    @ianhughesroyalenfield

    4 ай бұрын

Hi Pete, well, you really are testing me on this one. It boils down to what you want the bike for…….if you enjoy getting a wriggle on occasionally, at “naughty” speeds, then the Honda Hornet 750 is probably the way to go, it’s a quick bike, with excellent handling. Resale value would be better, lots of quality dealers, and to be fair it is a bargain. The BSA Goldstar is a nice, Classic looking bike, with modern technology, with many happy owners out there, but it just doesn’t quite hit the spot for me. The dealer network is still growing, but inconsistent quality of service. The Shotgun, just feels better built than the BSA, mind you it is about 23kgs heavier, but you don’t feel that when riding. I think (others may disagree), that it goes round corners and roundabouts better than the BSA too. The suspension feels so much better, especially over our horrible roads. By comparison, the Hornet would have your fillings rattling out, as the suspension is quite firm, obviously set up for a “sportier” ride. There are plenty of RE dealers, though ironically, none close to us, hence why I coincided these demo rides with visits to family, 90 miles away. I have heard that some dealers aren’t that reputable either. As for whether I would trade Clementine in, simple answer, nope. If I bought another bike, it would need to be an addition to the stable, there is just something quite satisfying, about bimbling along country lanes at a leisurely pace. If funds did come my way, I would probably buy a Honda CB500X (ride review coming out in a couple of weeks, thanks to a good friend letting me out on his), or the new Honda NX500. I would like a mile muncher, something I could travel further at a slightly quicker pace, with ease and comfort. I really hope this helps, but can only suggest that you take them out on demo’s. Good luck, let me know how you get on.

A shorter silencer for sure in my opinion for what it's worth 😉not sure how price compares to the BSA but I think I would prefer this ,but having said that I find it hard to get past the looks of the interceptor . Morning Mal. I can’t see any problem two up. Honestly, you just can’t feel the 240kg weight of the bike. I felt it more so in the SM. The low seat height, allowing both feet to be flat footed with a slight bend in the knee, would make stopping a breeze. I think we have all suffered with that wobble when you come up to a junction, but I really don’t see it as being an issue on this. I honestly recommend taking one out, the handling is sublime, smooth power (ok I didn’t ride this hard, as it was new), very comfortable seat (though no doubt a touring option will be available), I could go on, and on …….. 😂 Cheers
