Thank you for for this vid and it's great to see all the info and testing you're doing on Royal Enfield bikes. I've had my Fireball for 3 weeks now and really enjoying it, had to wait a couple of months for it but was worth the wait. I had a '90 Virago 1100 that I bought in 1990 that I had for years and has been my favorite. I had Rob North here in San Diego make some forward controls for it a couple of months after I bought it and I also did a few changes myself. Barend mirrors and a touring screen is the only addition I need for the Meteor as soon as we get them in California; for right now....

I cutted my air filter cap (still have the stock air filter), and bloqued the hot air comming from the engine. I'm surprised, to be honest, the bike runs smoother even in low revs (around 3-4k rpm) makes me feel more confortable about changing gears up on lower revs than before. Thanks for that George. I'm a very passionate reader of your work. Waiting for a badge of camshafts to get the air filter and the cams. Hope we can make them come all the way to Costa Rica.

Fitted the new camshaft on my 2021 Himalayan with 16 tooth sprocket and Tec air filter overwinter 2022/3. Have to say that these modifications did improve the bikes performance and slightly increased fuel economy. Now able to get 60 mph at about 4,200 rpm in 5th gear. Also, after resetting the tappet clearances as advised here, now better. However, the cam on my eu5 machine was slightly different, but replaced immediately. Many thanks George.

I'm an older, retired guy (turning 60 this month), and I got the Meteor because I wanted something lighter weight, easier to manage, economical, easy to work on, and it LOOKS GREAT! Great work 👍 At 16:50 a bell mouth shape intake would be ideal. Diverting air from behind the engine away to the sides before it heats up the airbox could work as well. Maybe a small convex shape firewall just in front of the air box might work.

Regarding Meteor, I've bought one, a supernova and I have a Z1000SX, KTM1290SAS, CRF300Rally and CB500F,... I bought it because I like the look of it and it is great in Mid Wales for just plodding around, just enjoying the environment and very economical to run, getting 105mpg, yes it's slow, but in a good way, If I want to go fast I use one of my big bikes, but I actually really like the looks of the meteor and it's value for money, as the fit & finish is very good, (only criticism is harsh crashy suspension) just a fun ride for an old man !! Anything on 2 wheels is good !!!!

I totally get your reasoning as to why the Meteor is becoming so popular…but I think the overriding reason is cost. The pressure on personal finances, with the cost of living rising and salaries stagnant or dropping, means people cannot afford £10k - £15k plus for a motorcycle. I think people are also becoming wise to the balloon payment con, where you never own the bike and still owe thousands at the end of the finance term…quite simply RE are providing a range of excellent motorcycles at an affordable price point.

Hi George, greetings from Thailand, I own a Meteor Stellar Black (also a GT535 and a Honda CB300R), out here, it's classed as a big bike, I was going to buy an Interceptor, but like you say, I've reached an age where I no longer want a big heavy bike (although the Meteor isn't light), the bike does seem to be restricted in top gear (although it's very rare I exceed 90km/hr), I hope you will be able to make a rear carrier for fitting a top box, I carry a pillion on a regular basis and have fitted a pair of Givi panniers for luggage space, but I do like to have a top box as well, anyway, here's hoping, keep up the good work, take care

The KTM 390 is made in India and I see some people in India changing to a different radiator. I had an English sports car that let rain in, but it only bothered me when I lived near a rain forest. My Oilhead had a snorkel that reached along the side above the cylinder. You'd have to relocate the oil cooler on the Himalayan to the IP frame.

I'd say that there are likely a multitude of videos on tappet clearance adjustment on KZread particularly for this easy to adjust style of tappets (as opposed to shims). What he was saying was essentially make them a 1000th of an inch less than the spec to make the intake and the exhaust valve clearance tighter. If you don't do maintenance yourself, you could probably ask your mechanic to do it for you (they may baulk at the idea but you're the one paying the money). It does take a 'special tool' to do the job yourself (to hold the screw in the correct adjustment whilst turning the locking nut to hold it there). These can be purchased from eBay - or others (on the RE Owners forum) have made their own. I like the sound of that as well - when I first heard the Himalyan tappet clearance just done (by ?The Wiltshire Man) on YT, I thought that he'd made a mistake. Most will argue that louder tappets are potentially less harmful than tight tappets, but I'm with you - I'd rather it was a little quieter! Cheers.

Also you mentioned you tested a euro 5 bS 6 in the states ,was this a Californian only US version , I ask because all the US reviews of the 2021 Himalayan I have seen have all been BS4 euro 4 versions - easily distinguished by the earlier larger frame at front of the fuel tank and smaller rear carrier - ?

I was interested in your experiments with the sensor on the Himalaya, when we had the hot spell my Interceptor wasn’t happy and felt less brisk. So I’v removed the sensor and cable tied it to the grab handle, also I’v used some foam rubber to seal between the airbox and frame to stop the hot air blowing past into the airbox. I have to say its a success, it pulls better at low speed and also seems to pick up quicker ! the only initial downside was that the idle speed went up a bit but has since returned to normal. All I have to do now is make a nice bracket to hold the sensor, are they waterproof ?

I put the stock filter cover back on my euro 5 Himalayan I didn’t get any more performance. The fuel economy went down I lost around 75 Ks range. It sounded horrible and there was noticeably more vibration. Just the DNA filter is great, tho it’s not quicker to 100 kph it has more pull and it smooths the Himalayan out noticeably. That is totally worth it but not the cover, in my experience. I am selling the air filter cover.

So it seems to me the way to block the hot air would be to design a new side plate that has an extended panel that would sit behind the plate and block the heat from the engine, plus putting the in the air holes in the rear. Obviously you need to finish your testing, but I see a market for a new side panel that blocks that engine heat.

Hi, I have just bought a royal Enfield scram and been told that if I don't take it back to the shop where I bought it from for the first service the warranty will be void by the way I am a retired motorcycle mechanic and MOT TESTER which they charge £140 ISH and I can buy oil and filter for £38 it's like you taking a bike elsewhere to get the service done which isn't going to happen and the place I bought it from uses 10-40 fully synthetic oil which the scram411 uses 15-50 semi.

Does installing your fuel booster plug on the Euro4 Himalayan solve the temperature sensor issue you describe in this video? Thanks

  • @georgemilburn6213

    @georgemilburn6213

No simply moving the stock sensor to the front of the bike will cure it, you simply need to extend the wiring with a bit of 2 core. When using a boosterplug you also need to mount the boosterplug temp sensor near to the headstock too as it will work a lot better.

@@georgemilburn6213 - Just under the headlamp would give excellent cooling for the oil, and leave more cool air for the engine intake. But I'd worry about the constant flexing of the oil lines from the fork turning left and right.

Hi there, thanks for all the vids. I've got a carby Himy 2017 NZ. How do these various modifications effect a carby version? I don't know what I'm talking about but would the carb need adjusting after changing the cam, air filter, exhaust? It seems there's a "little black box" on the injected bikes which sorts out fueling issues for you after a few minutes of running. I'm no engineer but i am curious, cheers.

@@georgemilburn6213 your so right George! Just bought a new seat from Hitchcock's the Tall version as they call it, only raises by 2 cm I reckon. Already an improvement, but no where near enough. Have found a guy who can do it and he is only 50 miles from me, his work looks awesome, very reasonable price, so will very likely do it, get the original modified. I can always leave the Hitchocks seat on when I trade in on a new 650 Sherpa (Enfield you have to do it!!!!), hopefully the seat will just swap in. That's the plan...
