Simple, low cost mule of a bike, great for back road adventures, I think Royal Enfield should be applauded for what they've done here. More bikes like this please! Keep it simple, keep it affordable, more bikers, more happy people!

Rohit Shinde I don’t want to offend anyone but a lot of reviewers in India don’t have any perspective in comparison to much more expensive bikes that are riden in Europe or the states. They either think the Himalayan is a Motorcross bike or the holy grail of biking. (I love the bike for its value and looks/style)

I am now 60 and have decided to buy my first bike, after a few weeks browsing the internet to see what was relevant I have decided to buy a RE Himalayan, I live near the army training area of Salisbury Plain so plenty of dirt / gravel roads for weekend fun rides. My local RE dealer told me that RE's new owners, who are bikers at heart, listened to what the public wanted from an adventure bike - light weight simple dependable and low cost, the 2 models I have looked at seemed well designed and well built.

David Skogley Well I've just finished my coast to coast across the US on it so I'm now up to 15600 miles! Perfect travel and trail machine, a bit steady on the uphill climbs into the wind, but no issue with reliability. In a short snippet of riding, possibly a bit like this video review, it's easy to find fault with performance etc, but over the duration of an extended ride you really grasp what an excellent piece of design the bike is. Low seat height and mass means you can ride solo up sandy remote trails without excess fear of getting stuck, whilst being able to mount luggage on front racks is a revelation for keeping the bike balanced. The bike makes more sense the more miles you do on it.

I've put just over 1000 miles on mine since early July. As a bigger rider at 6' 280 lbs it is just a little on the low power side for street use for me. It does well on secondary roads up to 55 mph, but pushing freeway speeds is tough on it. It's great on dirt roads and does really shine off-road. I've been getting about 68 mpg as it is breaking in and I'm quite happy with that. I personally wish there was a slightly wider wind screen as with a 52" chest, I get a bit of buffet on both shoulders. Someone who's closer to 5'6 to 5'8 and 220 or less in weight, it'd be ideal. Makes good in commuting in town as well and I'm finding that running Shell Premium does garner a bit of extra power and smooth running. With that kind of mpg it is worth putting the slightly more expensive gas in it. I have the optional Panniers installed and each holds about 3 gallons of gear. I can fit about grocery bags in them with my rain gear and necessaries bag and a couple cooler cups for keeping a drink cold. I think their assessment is right on and I'd certainly recommend it.

I have been looking to getting back into riding for some while now and recently discovered the Himalayan. My history with bikes goes back to the sixties when I had Triumphs and BSA so I am very old school and doing doing my own maintenance and repairs were normal at that time. The Himalayan suits my needs very well as I am on a limited budget, simple, economical, able to self maintain and inexpensive to buy and at my age I found it difficult to find something to suit my seniority, crotch rockets and custom bikes are not my thing now but last Friday I went and did a deal on an ex demonstrator and am really looking forward to swinging my leg over the saddle once more and do some of the tours I always promised myself but never had the time before. Next summer I plan to visit the Arctic circle and I am grateful to Royal Enfield for coming up with this little gem. I must get my copy of zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance out again! Happy Days.

I advise you to get the audible version of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance narrated by Michael Kramer and listen to it on the road. Your journey will be fulfilling. I have done it on a 16 hour ride.

Sounds like a good little bike that could even be better with a little tweaking. It’s popular, so I imagine RE will address its shortcomings, and make a good bike that much better.Great review, thank you.

I'm kinda in love with it already, I'm usually a cruiser type, hence most enduro machines are way to big, costy and expensive as I'd pick them to actually kick them up and down mountains so I'd rather stay on the road and easy terrain But this? Huuuge range, simple build with easy access engine, light weight, I want that and a wingman of the road!!

Himalayan = Reliable, low cost work horse! In off roads it's as good as bigger adv bikes, but at such a low cost!

I get the practicality of the headlight height but the whole mount ruins what looks it might have had. Enfield's still have a way to go nice to see some more diverse models.
