"Kongesangen" ("King's Song") is Norway's royal anthem. The lyrics come in several versions. The first version ("Gud sign vår Konge god, gi ham i farer mod") was written by N. Vogtmann around 1800, but the version used today was written by Gustav Jensen for the coronation of Haakon VII and Maud of Wales in 1906 and later used in his Landstads reviderte salmebok. It was inspired by the British royal and national anthem and set to the tune of "God Save the King"; Henrik Wergeland wrote a translation of "God Save the King" in 1841, dedicated to King Carl Johan of Norway and Sweden.
FRANÇAIS : Kongesangen (« chanson du roi ») est l'hymne royal de Norvège. Il existe plusieurs versions des paroles. La première version (Gud signe kongen vor) fut écrite par Henrik Wergeland ; la version utilisée aujourd'hui fut écrite par Gustav Jenson pour le couronnement du roi Haakon VII en 1906. Le texte est inspiré de l'hymne britannique, God Save the King, et la mélodie est identique.

Thomas Overskou bearbeidet den engelske originalen til dansk «Gud skærm vor Konges Hus», og i 1841 kom Henrik Wergelands selvstendige gjendiktning «Gud signe Kongen vor». Den første offisielle norske Kongesangen ble skrevet av Nikolaj Fogtmann omkring 1800, «Gud, sign vor Konge god». Fogtmanns versjon sto i norske sangbøker fram til ca 1920. En bearbeidet og forenklet versjon av denne ble laget av Gustav Jensen til Landstads reviderte salmebok.
Henrik Wergeland skrev i 1841 sin egen tekst til sangen, som en hyllest til kong Carl Johan. Hans versjon åpner med «Gud signe Kongen vor, Gud ham bevare for, sygdom og død».

I think the reason Norwegian kings sang "God Save The Queen" or "God Save The King" while attending British royal ceremony is because both anthems have the same tune.

King Olav V and King George VI are both first cousins and he was born in Sandringham estate, UK and was close in the British line of succession when he was born.

I can actually make out most of the lyrics without the translation while only speaking Dutch, German and English! Norwegian is a beautiful language, greetings from the Netherlands!♥

Now that I think about it. I think I know why Norway's anthem is a God Save the King rip off. When Norway gained independence in 1905, Prince Haakon of Denmark got the job of King. His wife, Princess Maud, was the daughter of Edward VII, who was King of the United Kingdom at the time. Since Maud came from the UK, Norway adopted an anthem set to the tune of that of her home country, as a tribute to the new Norwegian royal family's British heritage.

It was inspired by the British Royal and National anthem during the coronation of the first Norwegian king after the dissolution of Norway-Sweden Union; King Haakon VII and his wife Queen Maud of Wales (daughter of King Edward VII). 1:00 King Haakon VII was a Danish prince and was previously married in Buckingham Palace, attended by Queen Victoria and stayed in Appleton House, Sandringham Estate. Their only son the future King Olav V was also born there in the UK. Because of this relationship, the great powers chose him to be the King of Norway after the break up of Norway and Sweden from personal union.

@@Gaurav_Sharma3112the national anthem of many German kingdoms (Prussia, Hanover, Saxony, Bavaria) and later the entire German Empire (Heil Im Siegerkranz) also has the same tune to God Save the King. Today it remains as the national anthem of Liechtenstein and the royal anthem of Norway and was used by Switzerland until 1961.

most european monarchies are related to each other, marrying their children to various european dynasties. Queen Victoria and King Christian XI of Denmark are the most notable ancestral roots of today's modern european dynasties. As for the anthem this tune was first used in 1745 in England later adopted by Russia and the German empire in the 19th century.
I wonder is there any copyrights to National Anthem musics. LOL
