Royal Anthem of Canada: God Save the King (Bilingual version)
Музыка
"God Save the King" (alternatively "God Save the Queen) is the royal anthem of Canada, while "O Canada" is the national anthem of Canada. The royal anthem originated as a patriotic song in London in 1745 but neither the author nor the composer is known. It is also the national anthem of the United Kingdom, and the royal anthem of the 14 other Commonwealth realms. In addition, it served as Canada's de facto national anthem until 1967, when it became the royal anthem.

No, the British claim to authorship is the strongest. The claim made by numerous French sources that Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-87) wrote the music for "Grand Dieu sauve le roi" to the same tune as the one used as the British national anthem since 1745 originates solely with a set of purported memoirs, the *Souvenirs de la marquise de Créquy (1710-1803)* , printed in 7 volumes, 1834-1835, and addressed to her grandson, Tancrède de Créquy. This work is thought to be a 19th century forgery, produced by the Breton adventurer, Cousin de Courchamps. Whether this publication is a fake or not, the claim probably stems from confusion, whether deliberate or accidental, between, on the one hand, the anonymous French anthem "Grand Dieu sauve le roi" known to exist later in the 18th century and, on the other, a much earlier composition, the motet "Domine salvum fac regem" LWV 77/14 written by Lully to celebrate the recovery of Louis XIV from a surgical operation for an anal fistula in 1686. Numerous performances of the Lully work can be found on KZread so do look it up. It became popular at court as a royal anthem, often performed at the end of masses in the royal chapel but bears no musical or textual resemblance to "Grand Dieu sauve le roi" and, hence, none to the British "God save the King". The claim is, therefore, totally false. The earliest contemporary, first-hand documentary evidence for the tune of "God save the King" is from Great Britain in 1744. The earliest documentary evidence for any words that would fit the unusual metre of this tune date from the Chapel Royal in England in the late 1680s. The earliest documentary evidence for a composition entitled "God save the King" is to one with words by Ben Jonson (now lost), first performed in London in the presence of King James I in 1607. The first line is believed to have been "God save great James our King" and the music was by John Bull (a well known Jacobean keyboard composer). A manuscript of Bull's, a keyboard arrangement, dated 1619 was reported to have existed in the 19th century but has since disappeared and only now exists in a transcription made, with the permission of the manuscript's then owner, some time before 1878 by a well-respected figure in the musical establishment, Sir George Smart. The tune bears a striking resemblance to the modern day tune of "God save the King".

God Save the King of Canada! 🇨🇦 Quick question, what’s your thoughts on the new Canadian heraldic crown published by the Canadian Heraldic Authority?
@DukeofCanada
Жыл бұрын
I'm not a fan. While the idea of a distinct Canadian heraldic crown is interesting, I find the design a bit tacky, and I really don't like how they replaced the cross on top with a snowflake. The cross means that the Crown answers to God, and represents our Christian heritage, so having it replaced by a snowflake is pretty insulting, in my opinion. Since the coronation, I've been using the Tudor Crown for my channel logo, and I'll keep using it in my videos about Canada too.

It was originally from France.
Unfortunately, you have used the wrong French lyrics and bilingual version. According to Heritage Canada, the official Canadian French lyrics are: French version Dieu protège le Roi De sa main souveraine! Vive le Roi! Qu’un règne glorieux, Long et victorieux Rende son peuple heureux. Vive le Roi! The official bilingual version uses the first 3 English lines, the 4th to 6th French lines, and finishes alternatively with Vive le Roi or God Save the King. There is a problem in your version with the line - Notre Gratieux Roi - it does not have enough syllables. It would have worked for God Save the Queen - Notre Gratieuse Reine - since the feminine has an extra syllable.

"O Canada" (French: Ô Canada) is the national anthem of Canada. The song was originally commissioned by Lieutenant Governor of Quebec Théodore Robitaille for the 1880 Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day ceremony; Calixa Lavallée composed the music, after which words were written by the poet and judge Sir Adolphe-Basile Routhier. The original French lyrics were translated to English in 1906.[1] Multiple English versions ensued, with Robert Stanley Weir's version in 1908 gaining the most popularity, eventually serving as the basis for the official lyrics enacted by Parliament.[1] Weir's English-language lyrics have been revised three times, most recently when An Act to amend the National Anthem Act (gender) was enacted in 2018.[2] The French lyrics remain unaltered. "O Canada" had served as a de facto national anthem since 1939, officially becoming the country's national anthem in 1980 when Canada's National Anthem Act received royal assent and became effective on July 1 as part of that year's Dominion Day (today's Canada Day) celebrations.[1][3]
