Damn, that was the most coherent interview I've ever seen with Nick... I think only Roy and H.G's quick wit saved them from some sharp nosedives. Big thanks for the post.

HG, whatta guy, so humble he offers 4 & 20 pie to the Black Crow King, in a way that makes my heart sing for joy at the erudite nature of the True Blue buoy&sea. Which is not to forget Roy nor Nicky boy.

Best fucking interview. Nick looks so relaxed and let his defensive guard down, seeing as how Roy and HG weren't asking ridiculous questions and skipping around like many people do. They talk about serious things and still have room for laughs. I didn't cringe a bit! So thank god for this.

I agree with everyone else, this has to be the best Nick Cave interview I've ever seen. See, he's not an arsehole - just don't ask stupid questions media people!

One of the best interviews I've ever seen with Nick Cave. These two are funny, quick and clever and actually got him to really speak and laugh just a touch. My grandfather was an Irishman and yes, Cave's right they do have an understanding with sadness. As for Engelbert Humperdinck that guy sells out every year in N. Nevada even now he's still going at 84 people still love him, I am not in that ilk, but a lot still are. He's right about the "Batman" thing, it's not bad it's just not him I was never a fan of that film in particular either.

Classic interview!!!! Master interviewers Roy & HG are such softies here! They must really like Nick because they took it so easy on him. They got some really good stuff out of Nick, even though he looks uncomfortable.

I'm only really 'getting into' Nick Cave as of late; very interesting to know he lived in Ireland for a time. What part of Ireland and where, do you know? I was surprised to hear this - not exactly sure why however. Intriguing man.

If it was on the show "Planet Norwich" that would make it around 1998 which, IIRC, would've been the year Nick Cave turned 40.

Nicky boy has really got the whole "Fuck I'm bored, and it's YOUR fault!" look down pat, doesn't he? I believe the "look" falls under the "post-punk pre-grunge early-goth new old wave ante-new romantic post-but-still-relative-but-only-for-fans-vampire-chic". Or something like that.😁😎

1:13 Sadness as an essential part of one's character: a more enlightened person might find it impossible to agree, feeling it but part of the smorgasboard of possibilitiesand never a wholistic, no matter how dominant it may seem to some, especially at earlier stages of intellectual development and the expansion of the horizon's of one's soul. Compassion and empathy, perhaps they are more wholistic, phonemically speaking.

compare this to early interviews with Nick Cave (eg kzread.info/dash/bejne/lYepubSod9nKfLA.html ) Granted, Nick was older and more mature in this interview (despite his assertions that he has always felt old!) but Roy and HG didn't try to piss in Nick's pocket and they are intelligent people and have a sense of humour (even if some people don't get it!).

@GoingDown - I think that there is a bit of piss-taking and stereotyping going on there. I think you could credit Roy and HG with enough intelligence to know that Ireland is not all leprauchauns, pots of gold and guiness and "top of th mornin to ye"

'Anger' is absolutely replaced by 'melancholy' when you get older because you slowly start to realise the world is doomed to continue repeating the same mistakes over and over and over. The visionaries are ignored, the ignorant and short sighted praised and so the cycle continues. I guess you stop trying to change the world and start trying to change your own world...in the vain hope it will have some effect. Nick's right, melancholy has it's time and place.

Ir is funny that the shittier side of Australian (and potentially therefore international) politics may be played out in full view by people whom one might simply take for entertainers.
