Today is the first anniversary of Roy Hargrove's death. I will continue to listen forever.
The bassist can make a simple bassline sound spectacular. The pianist makes you want to get up and dance. The drummer instills a ton of energy into his playing. And about Roy... no words are needed, really. A simply magnificent performance which captures the very essence of jazz. Every time I'm watching this it feels like it's the first time. RIP Roy.

that piano solo was the greatest simply because he had to fight through the crowds out of time clapping and he still killed it on some level

what "offbeat" are people talking about, it's obviously just shifted to create the groove. you can tell by how seamlessly it goes into the full arrangement in the end of the solo. I thought it was cool and I can definitely sense the beat he was "talking" about.

Roy, you got to live your dream as a trumpet player.... many have dreams and never get to fulfill them..... I'm glad that while you was here for the short time that it was that you got to live out your dream as a musician....... and made a mark in the history of jazz just as strong as John Coltrane , Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie , Joe Sample, George Duke, Horace Silver and a host of others just too numerous to mention... thanks for the memories brother.......

That was brutal in the bridge the audience was so out but then he modulates the piano solo rhythm to fit the crowd and that's why these guys are some of the best in the world.
at first I thought the pianist was just being pretentious ... then the solo came and it had a pretty thelonious monk-esque sound so mad props
@itmsjim
5 жыл бұрын
My friend, the great drummer and Ed Thigpen, said once that whatever a musician played up on stage, it was their gig. So pretentious or not, it's not for us to judge. I wasn't a huge fan of that solo but that's not my flavor. It was obviously yours, so that's another reason why people should never judge the playing of anyone in jazz.

No matter how Roy changes up this song, Justin follows, fills in, brings the melody forward. They truly were a remarkable pair, more like brothers than band mates.
This is legit the first time a solo brought me a tear. Im talking abt the piano solo. Amazing how even the audience couldnt keep up. I need lessons from him.
Magic Piano. Very interesting approach. Powerfull soulful Roy
Standing outside of Tower Records near Juilliard, I was blessed to meet this man before "The Roy Hargrove" arrived and my good friend Tichina Vaughn told me, hey you would not believe he has two records in there. He was the nicest young man, not pretentious, but humble. He was in a valley time, but truly blessed. God needed him more than us, but I will miss him! R.I.P. Roy. Play for Jesus and our Lord. He will say you are one of my best creations.

Awfully hard to play this- with a different approach-when the original was: perfect. RIP Roy. Ty for so much joy.
I was blessed to have first seen Roy on the North Sea Jazz Cruise in 2007. He performed with his group and Marcus Miller (the host) on the ship. Roy blow the house down at the Ahoy Center in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. The venue had a full house. It was interesting because in Europe, young folk are really into jazz. Since that time I've heard him on the West Coast, DC and New York. I never got tired of listening to Roy. He was a giant. RIP!
You had me at the first snare hit. Dang that drummer sounds good.
