    Difference between someone who has rowed on the water and one who has only been on the machine is clearly evident hear. The extremely early back break on the cross fitter brings tears to my eyes :)

    not sure if ignorant to the efficiency in movement, or all 122 of you (r. johnston included) cannot do 25 butterfly pullups that quickly during a metcon...

    Not fair to the rower as the 250m rows are too short. Go for 1000 or 2000 on the end and it would be more of a fair fight A 250 m distance only separates the poor rowers from the good ones by a few seconds because it's too short. Even poor rowers who are reasonably fit can muscle their way through a 250. Also, body weight exercises like pull ups favor smaller/shorter people and taller people are also at more of a disadvantage on oly lifts like cleans/thrusters because they have to lift through more distance which is just more work. Double unders are also a skill primarily - less about fitness. But even there, shorter people have more of an advantage there as well since they are dealing with a shorter rope.

    Make it be on the water and crossfitter has 0 change. On the machine is just so different and obviously requires way less technique, which is where the rower would win immediately (I mean, obviously it's impossible to expect someone who was never on the water before to have a chance)

    The requirements were set for the workout, the exercise was not strict pull ups, it was CrossFit’s definition of a legal kipping pull up rep. The guidelines were set for this particular workout and both athletes were allowed to perform the exercises however they wish providing they meet the particular guidelines. The demo started reps are what the athlete/s decided to do and what they felt worked best for them. The rules were followed and the reps were performed correctly and efficiently. If you don’t like then official guidelines and requirements for reps in the sport of CrossFit, there are plenty of other sports and competitions that have different work requirements, go watch one of them instead of hosting on this modern sport.

    This was really just a CrossFit guy beating a non-CrossFit guy. The fact that the other guy was a rower became inconsequential once he started doing high-intensity lifting right before the erg race. The lactic acid and stress is already at a point where the aerobic work is probably not sustainable, so you are far less likely to see a thrashing victory from the rower. That said, I remember my brief time at a CrossFit gym involving a competitive CF athlete and trainer who was taller and heavier than me (and probably took steroids), but he was so confused about how a guy so much smaller than him could be scoring so much better on the erg. If you rowed through your teens then you might have impressive sport-specific leg and upper-back muscle endurance even years after you quit the sport and work behind a desk 24/7.

    The reason I think this is an inaccurate test of who is more athletic is because they had a rower vs a crossfitter do a crossfit workout. If they would have them compete in a rowing workout such as 20x1min on 1 min rest whoever gets the most meters wins the crossfitter would be 1000m behind

    The WOD is not fair to the rower. The row should have been at least 1000m at the beginning and the end. Pull ups, if you dont butterfly, you lose time. The WOD has to be even.

    Amir Uddin agreed. 250m is nothing, and the crossfitter is much better at small burst sets and would definitely lose holding 2 1k's against the rower

    Contest set up for cross fit to win. Very little rowing involved. And ya, a 1:36 split for only 250 meters is not optimum for a young rower. At 47 years old that time would not be acceptable to me. A big guy this young should be able to destroy me in any erg contest.

    I consistently row around 575 m in 2 minutes on a Concept 2 at resistance 8 (=highest) and I'm no rower. What's with all these numbers? Some hidden talent of mine (lol... ) or some different way of measuring?

    I believe the damper is highest at 10, not 8. Perhaps you're using a different model Concept 2 ? Something besides a model D or E?

    Jan Kroeze you must be on a different erg because all concept 2 ergs for the last 12 years have had a max resistance of 10. And yes I used to row. 👍🏻

    250 meters x2 , was quit unfair. Fair would be about half of the time rowing, and the other half doing other crossfit stuff. Maybe 450 meters x2, would be more appropriate

    This Challenge needs to increase the length of the rows to 500 or 750m in order to make the rowing portion ratio equal to all the "crossfit" exercises. The 250's were :45 secs ea.? WTF? Like triathlon it is rigged for the runner. Swimming is only a small portion of the events and therefore makes Swimming a non-factor. Even bikers get screwed.

    It doesn’t make any sense. It is clear that rower can’t perform proper clean or even DU nor butterfly pull ups. The last one really speeds up!!! He lacks on technique not on endurance.
