Rowing for Gold from "The Boys of '36"

Ойын-сауық

The US Men's rowing team had a terrible start in the Olympic race. With the crowd cheering ‘’Deutschland,’’ the boys from Washington were on the outside of the course and struggled against the wind and chop with every stroke. Suddenly, in the last thousand meters, Don Hume picked up the pace and the boys accelerated to victory! "The Boys of '36" premieres August 2 at 9/8c on PBS.

I am so appreciative that I got to row for the University of Washington while I was at school there, and to share in the history of this incredible sport.

It's been like 3 years since I've read this book, but the atmosphere created by the author is still one of my most loved experiences as a reader. The boys rowing perfectly in sync. Row. Row. Row. The coaxman keeping them in sync as pure exhaustion took a hold of them. The coaxman kept screaming when to row, but they couldn't hear him over the extreme noise intensity of the stands. So to keep them in sync he banged on the boat in rhythm..... Just.... the atmosphere of pure sound where as one of them you're there, rowing, body so beyond exhaustion you don't even know if you're alive anymore while the crowd around you is so loud it might as well be silence.

I am currently reading this book. I think about it all day at work and can't wait to get home to read the next chapter. I am currently obsessed with rowing.

I wonder what was going through Don Hume's head when that second wind of energy came; it was personally inspirational for him. I believe that he thought of nothing but the feel of the boat on the water, coupled with his breathing, and started using other parts of his rowing abilities before unleashing the final wind of energy he had.

I was on the rowing team Culver 08’. One of the best team sports, loved gliding over the water. It’s not easy, but its a show of strength and teamwork

A feelgood American soapie. No justice to the brilliant book where the social situation of the rowers was as important as the sport. I watched the film with a large group of rowers who just about fell apart laughing at the quality of the rowing - as one said - ''about the level of my Year 10s'.

Its the angle of the videographer. If you look close at the cones that are across the course you can see that the U.S. boat won by about 12 feet.

The young men were amazing truly. It must also be said that they were exploited by the school. Yes they got food and a small room. But no scholarship. They in addition to the countless hours of training also had to work part time and PAY FULL TUITION. Shame on the school. This is exploitation.

oh please, go back in your woke hole. It's called work and they gloried in it. You couldn't have survived the Depression or WWII. They excelled. You complained.
