Roving Camera on the Isle of Wight

Rare and unique video taken from 8mm film of events on the Isle of Wight in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Compiled from cine film shot and narrated by the late Roy Hannam. Mainly colour with soundtrack.
Features Island life and landmarks from the 1950s and 60s. Some of the rare footage includes the Cowes to Southampton hovercraft, the landslide at East Cowes seafront, the town's 1963 carnival at which Roy's daughter, Celia, was carnival queen, and Craig Douglas being mobbed on Ryde seafront in August 1960, before two concerts at the Commodore Cinema.
Other memories include the Medway Queen, a Princess flying boat, the grounding of the Brother George off Brook in 1964, Newport harbour, the Blackgang model village, an old local car, DL 74, at Ryde canoe lake and the Vectis Roads 1959 Island Grand Prix.
Roy Hannam worked at the County Press for more than 50 years and there are shots taken at the old Linotype machines.

Really enjoyed watching this. I didn't start going to the Island until the 1980's so regconised some of it. But then I have now been there almost every year since, and it is sad that so much of Blackgang has gone. I'm still finding lots of new places to visit though.

Nice video, but big mistake at 41:02 where you show a photo of "Totland Bay",,,, This would be Freshwater Bay!

This is a great film. Some good quality footage with lots of locations - and the music is nice too. MV Osborne Castle was active 1962-1978. MV Fishbourne (1961-1983): www.wightpedia.org.uk/detail.php?id=car-ferries Love those old cars and caravans; and the traction engines. Pity we don't see more of the steam train at 13:22. 21:02 - Scary scenes at Alum Bay. 21:20 - Superb shots of Freshwater Bay and the Stag and Arch Rocks. Give me a bow and arrow for the foxhunters please! Great shots of Newport Quay beginning 28:42. Hovercraft at 31:27 looks like the SR-N5 which started in 1964: www.jameshovercraft.co.uk/includes/gallery.php?galName=g_n5edunn&imageNo=0 Plenty of history on The Medway Queen here: www.medwayqueen.co.uk/history.html 37:40 - Can just about make out Bert Weedon on the bill poster and possibly The Avons - one Sunday in August. The Commodore in Ryde is still there - as a cinema and bingo hall. 41:02 is actually Freshwater Bay as seen earlier in the film at 21:20. 41:12 - Middle rock was called The Arch Rock which finally fell in October 1992.

If Queen victoria were alive today..... She'd probably have a right Royal crush on me! I'd be in trouble! I don't really find her that attractive!!! She'd say "one must be my boyfriend... Or it's off with your head!!!" At leat we'd be living on the island.
