Rover P6 - DIY MOT nearly sunk the Titanic

I only wanted to give the car a quick check over....
Now I need to bribe Lyndon to weld up all these holes I found 😂 LOL

I'm an old guy now.retired now. I used to work in the MOT bsy at a. Garage. I used to do sll the welding. That is nothing to what i used to face every day! I could spend weeks on a Transit van or anything? Before you know it, it's done. If you paint it with plenty of red oxide and cover it with waxoyi, it will see you well. Im a JAG man. Phew, they know how to rot!!!!! I've spent most of my life on my back welding them! Outer sill, inner sill, soll to floor, chassis, the whole car!!!!!!the windows would look good though! Cheer up, that's nothing compared to some of my night mares. I enjoyed that video.

A wee tip for non structural holes. Either file it round and fit a grommet and sealer. Or a nut and bolt with a repair washer and sealer again. It was a body shop manager that told me that years ago. It cuts down the cost of the welding. Great videos. Keep them coming.

I wouldn't jack any P6 with the factory jack and jacking tubes. I worked on the last of the P6 models at a dealership at the very end of the 1970s. The official workshop method was to use a round metal bar in the tubes, evenly on each side, just to support an unladen vehicle on axle stands. The workshop trolley jacking points were a pad under the front engine crossmember, and that oblong block below the rear valance. Even vehicles that were just a few years old could buckle those side tubes, simply by carelessly jacking it up when changing a wheel if there were the weight of passengers sat in it. I would not jack under any part of the De Dion tube or it's elbows as you can cause internal stress cracks, or suspension misalignment. For DIY jacking, you are probably safest to jack under the front lower arm, or rear trailing arm where they both attach to the chassis. You are better off carrying a small trolley jack as I wouldn't trust that factory side jack on any P6, even the most structurally sound ones, unless it was an absolute emergency, and with no weight in the car. I don't want to alarm you, but keep a close eye on that rust around those rear chassis legs. As a vehicle repair engineer, I've seen P6's " break their back" around the rear chassis where the springs and bump stops are mounted. Pay attention to the slightest sign of an uneven gap developing between the rear wing and door. It can develop quite quickly once corrosion develops from water getting into that rear chassis rail. More so if you carry weight in the boot and rear seat passengers. It is often terminal as it's a very complex repair to sort once it buckles the chassis.

I was so lucky to had my car back in the 80's, a 1973 P6 3500s, it only a little welding needed on the jacking points. Once the wings were replaced it was rust free. I remember horror stories of Kwikfit etc jacking them up under the design tube ... very expensive fix

I know the pain. My P6 was rusty in the exact same area. In fact some plonker had decided to fill mine with cardboard and a sheet of tin and paint over it! Had to have the arch re-fabricated but at the end of the day once it's done you know the car is ready for action again. Best to catch it now before it gets too far gone. Mr Jenkins will be making you smile again soon that's for sure!

@@Alexsassets I know it's crazy! That rust converter is absolutely fantastic stuff so using that where the metal is still good is a fantastic plan. Luckily that arch isn't actually structural to the cars integrity so it will be just fine until you get round to welding it. So long as you do it this summer Mr Jenkins will be right as rain. Really interesting to see you use the elbows as the jacking point I'll take that as a very good piece of advice for the future I too find jacking them up to be a mission. Great Video.

@EclipseGaming2073 only thing is it's hard to get the wheel off if you jack on the elbow. . . But I manage ok like that . I certainly feel safer. I accidentally let the jack down too fast today and thankfully I had the axle stand there, or it could of got messy 😅

Hi Alex, You really did get down and dirty doing that job...I sympathise with you on wondering why you start a task only to realise perhaps you ought not to have started it. I know, I to have been there, more than once...That will all come together though in the end. I must admit I was surprised at the disc brake unit bring that far away from the wheel. A certain type of electric train unit had a similar arrangement on their pantograph coaches, where the braking was mounted on the axles. Glad you were working as safely as possible, giving hood advice as you did so. Well done. See you next time and take care, Jon B. 🙂

Rover's engineers were very strongly influenced by the Citroen DS when they designed the P6. The DS also has inboard disc brakes, although only on the front. This helps to reduce unsprung weight and improves handling and roadholding. Also look at the sides of both cars. The passenger area with the doors and roof is a very similar shape.

Hi Alex, Great video but please get yourself a mask for these dirty jobs. Always a good idea to wash under these arches with a hose before you start inspecting them. Give them a good soak first, leave them for 15 mins and then go back for a second wash down. It will make a big difference, the mud holds the damp and encourages the rust. Keep them clean and your car will stay rust free for longer. It's just one of those miserable jobs but it's good that you've caught the rust now.😉

I have now A rover, 3500S manual with power steering. Unfortunately the steer does turn around but the wheels do not. Oke, the car is free of rust, almost nothing and only from outside because it is treated with body protection inside. I need to get it to drive again after mucho years from 1981 is car be stored in barn. build 1976 and was on the road until 1981. Your do restore from rust but most of the cases is from the inside out, so you need to treat also the in the metal tubes.
