Router on a Stick, Inter-VLAN Routing - Part 1

A quick tutorial on inter-vlan routing and router on a stick for the Cisco CCNA. The demonstration is done using Packet Tracer. In part 1, I discuss the benefits of VLANs and how it is best implemented with inter-VLAN routing over a trunk.

When you set up ROAS, does it screw things up if the physical interface has an IP or can you have IPs configured on the sub and physical interface?

  • @EveryDooDarnDiddlyDay

Can you configure sub-interfaces with a port-channel? How would you do that, would you just configure the sub-interfaces on the port-channel interface instead of the physical interface? I need to trunk 10 VLANS up to a 3750 routed port(from a 2960) over a 4 link port-channel, cross-stack redundant with two links on top device and two links on bottom device (2 - 3750s stacked). These VLANS are all considered "connected" routes, yeah? We are migrating from routed links.

VLANs are separate networks, they are layer 3, they are broadcast domains.

Hi, do you have any tutorials on inter-site VLAN routing? For example, on the slide around 07:45 say that was HQ on the left and BRANCH on the right with a serial link between, how would you route the vlans? (also assuming the PC's have different IP addresses ie; VLAN 10 HQ-PC: 192.168.10.100 and VLAN 10 BRANCH-PC:192.168.10.101) Cheers.

why do you need to put a 3rd switch in the middle? - why can't you just connect the 2 existing switches via a trunk?

good lord, can I get a single answer everyone tells me something different, or I read something different, I understand this somewhat, but VLANS aren't supposed to have any knowledge of IP addresses, VLANs are a layer 2 or MAC address tool, subnetting on the other hand is layer 3. Does that apply here and you just didn't mention it????
