Route 66 Road Trip Stops in Illinois

Illinois is the last state that we drove through on our 14 day Route 66 journey. For most people, this will be the first state as the route is most often traveled from east to west. We found a lot of great spots in Illinois with the Gemini Giant, Cozy Dog Drive-In and the Pontiac Museum being some of our favorites. I hope you enjoyed this road trip series and let me know if you have any comments below.

Thanks for the Route 66 journey. I did the Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica a few years ago. There is so much to see (even now). It was a nostalgic memory of my trip. I am so glad we did it when we did. I now live in Australia and have Parkinson's Disease. My timing was right. As there is no way I could do it now. Watching your Route 66 Series is now my way of visiting the Iconic Road.

Great series, seems like you had a great time with your dad, and that's the best part. Touching on Springfield, IL; the Lincoln library-museum has this cool show thing you can watch where holograms come out of the books as a guy tells you a story, it's really neat. They also have a carillon ( a set of like church bells that is a musical instrument somebody can play) in Washington Park that you can climb and at certain times they have somebody playing it which is very cool. The old state capitol downtown is really neat too and there are some great places to grab food there too.

Looks like you had a good trip. We raised 3 kids in Dwight, Illinois. The gas station there was called "Beckers Texaco" & I bought many gallons thru the years. We live in Colorado now but I worked at RR Donnelley & Sons in Dwight (you went by it on your way to Braidwood) then transferred to Colo. Pres Obama as a Ill state senator stopped many times at that corner to McDonalds on his way to Spfld, Ill. That was the 1st stop light out of Chicago. Plus, as a teen I was an Usher at the Rialto Theater in Joliet.

Did you go to the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge? Highly recommended among any Route 66 traveler! Although I understand that you can't always go everywhere on 66, but this classic bridge was one of the connections between MO and IL. This is one of four bridges that carried Route 66 across the Mississippi River. Next time you're out on the Mother Road, you gotta check it out. Plan on a couple of hours because the bridge is a mile long. Great videos, btw! I have traveled the Illinois portion, and I'm always looking for ideas as far as the other states. I've actually made some 66 videos myself (if you're ever bored....)

When in Collinsville, you missed Cahokia Mounds. This goes back over 1000 years. You missed out on Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site, about 8 miles northwest of Springfield. You skipped Dixie Truckers' Home. I worked in Braidwood for about 6 months in 1985, so I spent a fair amount of time eating at the Polk-a-Dot Drive Inn and even more quarters in the Centipede video game. You did miss the Braidwood Inn, where I stayed years before Steve Martin and John Candy did. The Launching Pad is in trouble right now and there are threats to destroy the Gemini Giant, so it is good you saw it when you did.

Enjoyed your Route 66 vid series. I did the IL section with my Dad, Mom and Son in Aug. 2001. We enjoyed Collinsville for the town square in addition to the Ketchup bottle water tank. Covered bridges and Frank Lloyd Wright buildings are my two other traveling must-sees and IL is endowed with both. Stopped at the covered bridge outside Springfield too and the FLW Dana-Thomas house state park, one of the best. Had a vegan Cozy Dog in Bob Waldmire’s honor. He was the son of CozyDog’s creator/owner. Most of the Route 66 museums you visited on your trip were created after our trip. Enjoyed getting sirrup from Funk’s Grove, stopping at a FLW bank in Dwight in addition to the gas station. Made a side trip north to Oak Park where we stayed at the FLW Cheney house that was operated as a B&B at the time. This is the house that was designed for the client that was the basis for the best-selling historical novel ‘Loving Frank’. We spent a day touring this Mecca of Prairie architecture including the FLW Home & Studio and deep dish Chicago style pizza (be prepared to wait up to 45 minutes for them to bake). We had an authentic FLW leaky roof experience the next morning after picking up my girlfriend at O’Hare when a thunderstorm came gushing across the rafters of our downstairs room and onto a FLW designed dining table. We ended our Route 66 journey the next morning as we all piled into my Dad’s van to head through Chicago to the end of the Route. One of my favorite historical eating places, Berghoff is right near the end of the route on W. Adams as is the FLW remodeled Rookery building lobby. We continued northeast from here to a family reunion in Michigan. Thanks for bringing us along on your adventure. Memories of our two special trips with my Dad and family came flooding back.

The Catchup bottle was a Catchup water tank. Bottle revolved around tank. This was also the Home of Brooks Beans.
