Incredible seamanship. Not only rounding the Horn, but under race conditions.

It makes one appreciate those who did that in wooden ships, no radio or GPS, East to West instead of with the wind and sea.

Was fortunate to experience sailing the latest VOR on transat crossing West to East. Very exciting and extreme, but probably the worst boat (comfort-wise) to be on a longer trip. Cannot avoid being on deck, as there's no autopilot and boat's design requires at least 3-4 guys on deck at any time to have proper control of it. Changing or hoisting sails requires even more guys on deck. While on deck, you have no protection from water and wind - it's like an upscale version of a laser dinghy, so you absolutely want the best clothing there is while in North Atlantic. After you return from you shift, all soaked and cold, you find yourself in a non-heated, super-moist cabin, have some tea and food, and get into likewise moist sleeping bag. And then after some sleep the routine restarts.

I can see what your saying from the footage. Absolute bastard of a boat. We used to call the Sydney Hobart the washing machine race. I'll never refer to it by that again after what you said and what I've seen. Yes,just a 70ft Laser. Mentally and physically demanding to the extreme. Well done to you my Friend.

What is it they used to say? "Wooden boats sailed by iron men?" I'm not sure what these boats are made of, but these are iron men for sure! 0:38 I think I might enjoy this for a few minutes (provided I didn't get washed overboard), but to do it for weeks at race intensity is nothing short of incredible!

@Urbeee These days they wear dry suits and immersion suits. So they stay dry and can maintain body temperature if they go over the side. When I did it we had neither. Our waterproofs were excellent but a little water could creep in. If anyone went over the side, they had a very short time when they would stay conscious. 15 minutes tops. The water temp below 50º South averaged about 3ºC.

Its because of audience. What draws the most audience, draws in the sponsors. Sponsors and audience brings in money. Its capitalism 101. Nobody gets anything because they "deserve" it. There is no divine justice. Only supply and demand. If Volvo Ocean Race drew in 20 million viewers there'd be a lot better prizes too. These sailors dont do this for the prize, its their passion and their life.
