I don't think there is a human on Earth (except possibly a crazy frenchman or a drunk kiwi) who would not get seasick at some point in conditions like this. Personally, I "don't get seasick" but I know that really means I am just more resilient to it than others and in my 15k offshore miles, I haven't encountered the right conditions yet. I'm sure the Southern Ocean could provide them 😅

I have some friends that think sailing is a retired old person's game like golf. Then I take them out on my sailboat in 20 knot winds and they have to change their underwear. But this video is on a completely different level. Absolutely awesome! Some of the best footage I've seen.

Looked like a very unfortunate nose dive that caused the boat to head to starboard. As soon as she's gybed through the wind it was game over and the leeward heel causes the boat to head up. The foresails were then set for the wrong tack, causing the sails to 'back' and cause more heel.

Curious why they don't just add more mass to the keel bulb. 1816 more kg would only result in the boat sitting about 2cm lower in the water, but the additional over-heeling insurance would be worth it, would it not? Imagine that 1816kg (4000 pounds) as a lever to prevent the boat going over too far. that is a lot of leverage, especially on a deep centerboard they seem to use. Also, imagine how much more power they could extract from the wind if they could rely on that much extra mass. I know the centerboard would have to be heavier to hold that mass up, but what of it? How about 3000 extra kg? It's only about 166L of extra lead that can be extremely streamlined under the water. 3000 kilos of mass can REALLY help a sailboat stay upright. IN FACT, to balance that out, couldn't they have outrigger pontoons that ONLY go underwater when the boat heels to the other side? A 3000L pontoon could provide enough flotation only when heeled to cancel the mass of the 3000kilos of lead, while simultaneously adding leverage to lift the boat and keep it out of the water, and fully-submerged streamlined masses are far lower in their drag than boat hulls that have to deal with surface physics. With the boat having an extra 3000kg in the keel and an extra 3000kg of buoyancy in a pontoon, that would provide, given a 5m-tall centerboard and 30 degree list with a static centerboard, 8660 kg-m of extra torque to counteract any wind. This amount increases with the angle of heel, peaking at 15,000kg of torque supposing they got the boat laying flat on its side. 15,000 kg-m of torque should easily be able to right the boat OR prevent it's falling over in the first place. That is the equivalent of 1000kg of force applied against gravity 15m up the mast. I don't even know if the M5 could stay laid over on its side with 1000kg of force 15m up the masts. The extra power one could extract from the wind under all conditions, coupled with the extra stability of the boat could more than make up for any drag induced. I am well familiar with the fact that the wings they use push up on the side of the boat with dynamic lift, but static lift and weight would provide stability under all circumstances, even the most extreme, especially the most extreme. The wing shapes of the daggerboards which work to provide counter-torque to the sails does not come free, but with a drag penalty, also. I do not think the rules allow pontoons, however, but I can see their value in a dynamic sailing situation. These only weigh 12,500kg, so the amount of sheer torque provided by the extra mass and flotation would cause them to need a truly super-sturdy set of rigging, sails, and mast. But, oh, the speed they could achieve. They may consider going with a hull shape that is substantially more of a fine entry to minimize violent wave slap as they sailed, which killed one America's Cup yacht. They may have to go with an even more-cylindrical front section of the boat. I understand that the extra mass causes extra drag through the water, at the most important place, the surface, but if said extra mass was offset by a pontoon would it really matter? Also, the deck area needs to be far more streamlined. Any water you accelerate to boat speed by the very non-fluid-dynamically-efficient deck area and unguarded personnel is water that is slowing you down. The helmsman needs a fairing to help the water slide gracefully past him and off the deck; he doesn't need to be a parachute or sea anchor for tons of water coming over the cabin.

Very lengthy analysis! On the face of it you are mostly correct but race class regulations and increased inertia are the reasons why your otherwise valid points do not cut it in the design. Most teams will always elect lighter keel bulbs on longer keel fins rather than the opposite to minimize craft inertia which is a huge no-go for any racing application.
