Roundabouts Part 2 - Lifesavers | MOD 2 TIPS #4

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Hey dudes, hope everyone is doing ok. So we're taking another look at roundabouts in this video, more specifically at lifesavers. There are times when lifesavers must be used and there are times when they don't. The way I was taught was to always do both lifesavers. In this video we'll go over when they should be used and when you don't have to use them.

    Glad everyone has been finding the mod 2 videos helpful and I thank everyone for the feedback. I am aware there were occasions I was over the speed limit, we all have bad habits when we first start riding. I will always take constructive criticism onboard but I will NOT tolerate silly or abusive comments on the matter. Ride safe. 🤜🤛

    @15.19 you were approaching a exit which was after 12, I see that you did took the right lane but did not indicated right signal as it is after 12.So as per my current knowledge is it a mistake or I need to learn something new. Please reply to me as I have my Mod 2 booked for the day after tomorrow.

    @rajmalhotra9766 for exits like this it's up to you really if you want to indicate to the right. There's no harm in doing a right indication as long as all your check and are done correctly and you signal correctly for leaving the roundabout. For me personally though I always treat exits like the one you mentioned as straight on and treat it like a straight on exit. If it was over towards the 3 o'clock position then I'd definitely be indicating to right as I'd be travelling around the roundabout.

    Thank you so much for the in depth explanation. This has definitely been a lot more helpful. I spoke with my instructor about it yesterday. It's the extra left lifesaver that I was told not to do cause apparently down here at the test centre in Nottingham it can cause you to get minors on your test. Supposedly they see it as you are doing too many observations, which means you are not looking ahead enough and concentrating on what's in front. I find it difficult not to do the extra left lifesaver with being a car driver for 34 years. I've spent thousands of hours and miles on the roads as I used to be a sales rep, so I was always aware and on guard of my surroundings. I suppose I have to change if I want to pass my Mod2 in June. Apparently that is the only issue they have brought up is my observations. I am doing them, but they've said they can't always see me doing my mirror checks etc. I think I am going to alter my mirrors next time so that I have to move my head a lot more, instead of just moving slightly. BTW I'm originally from Scotland and that's why I like to watch and listen to you. I would definitely recommend that you go into being a riding instructor, cause you have a very good explanation and a calming voice. 😀

  • @MotoEcosse

    @MotoEcosse

    3 жыл бұрын

    It's crazy how different areas and schools/examiners have different views on lifesavers and when to use them. We also have minors for too many observations but usually only if you're do well over 2. As for the mirrors, what I was taught to do is to use your chin and point it to the outside of the mirror, that way your forced to make a big head movement that can be easily seen. I'm definitely interested in becoming an instructor in the future. Need to wait a few more years before I'm eligible, but on the plus side it gives me time to do all my advanced rider training etc.

    As a learner studying, what I arrived at was that whatever side of you that there's open road on /or both sides dictates what side or both that you carry out shoulder checks on. So when I exit a roundabout I check to see that the traffic on the exit before mine is giving way for me to pass and then that nobody is about to cut me up just before I exit.

    Cheers for explaining all this man really cleared up a lot of confusion as my life savers were all over the place! Quick question though that you didn't go over, what about single lane/mini roundabouts? I've been doing left life savers whenever leaving one but at times it feels wrong to look left when going straight on/right for example. Obviously with bigger single lane roundabouts it's easy enough to check both sides but when it comes to mini's there isn't enough time. Loving these videos by the way got my mod 2 coming up and you've done a really good job explaining everything!

  • @MotoEcosse

    Hey, Cameron. Glad you found it helpful. I could of swore I did a section in these videos on mini roundabouts 😂😂. I'll put together a quick video on them, but basically, when approaching mini's everything should be the same in terms of give way to the right and OSMPSL. With mini's only having one lane and realistically, not a lot of room or time when navigating them, you only really need to signal when going left or right. There just isn't really time or space to indicate left for an exit. This is the same with life savers. There just isn't time. Your on the mini then off in a matter of seconds sometimes. So basically, signal left for left, no signal needed for straight on and right signal only for right and no life savers needed. With there being no time for life savers, generally you want to approach mini's at a slow pace and in 1st gear. This gives you a bit more time to scan everything before making your way through the mini. Mini's are one of those things that some instructors may recommend a life saver, but I personally wasn't taught that way and did mini's this way on my Mod 2 and was absolutely fine. It's always worth clearing it up with an instructor if you can, but this is generally the way you would deal with mini's. Hope this helps mate and all the best for Mod 2. 🤜🤛

    The thing with vehicles like lorries, tractors, buses etc they have reduced mirror visibility and if you watch something like lorry going around a corner or roundabout, they sometimes have to take up more than one lane, so giving them room and making sure you're seen by the driver is essential. Hey, Munir. Yeah you're spot on. Indicate to the right as your approach so other road users know your intentions, then after you pass the last exit before the one you intend to take, in this case the 2nd exit, you'd pop your left indicator on.

    Have an upcoming Mod2. Would like to ask you as sometimes I tend to do more lifesaviors every 6-8 seconds,can this be a potential downfall? If there is a moment where I forget to do a lifesavior on entering a new road lets say right turn but did the mirror-indicator-shoulder check but forgot the second one before the actual turn,can this be a fail? Im not attending any school apart from the CBT last year, Mod1 was passed recently as im upgrading my license with the knowledge no lessons needed. If it happens to forget to make a shoulder check a single or two during the 40 minute test can this be a fail? The easiest for me to make the lifesaviors are in the roundabout,they are like second nature to me. Another question is If on changing the road position it happens to be fast change after giving the mirror-signal-shoulder check getting on next position faster instead of smooth,can this be a reason for a fail (control part) despite making all observations and a respectable distance is being maintained from the vehicles in front and back? An answer will be really appreciated.Thanks.

    Hi, this has been really helpful thanks. Two quick questions, when turning right at the roundabouts your diagram showed out taking the left lane exit (at 3pm position) and using a left livesaver. If you instead exited into the right hand lane I am assuming you are still taking the left lifesaver. Wouldn't it be safer to use the right exit? Also how would the advice differ for mini-roundabouts?

  • @MotoEcosse

    @MotoEcosse

    Жыл бұрын

    Generally I always do a lifesaver when there is an empty lane i.e empty lane to the right, check right, empty lane to the left, check left. Always do the left lifesaver last. As for mini's, you only need to signal when going left or right. No need for lifesavers or signalling your exit(although I sometimes do).

  • @MotoEcosse

    @MotoEcosse

    Жыл бұрын

    It depends really, if it's a mini roundabout then no lifesavers are needed and you only need to signal while going left or right( mini roundabouts are usually just a small white circle). If it's a normal roundabout then the usual roundabout law applies i.e lifesavers and correct signalling. 🤜🤛

    Well if it's a roundabout and you go to take your exit and you see it's not safe when you do your lifesaver, you wouldn't take the exit. Just carry on around the roundabout. For maneuvers like the U turn, you always do a lifesaver before the turn. If you see something when you do your lifesaver simply pull back over and stop, then wait until it's clear again.

Would you stay in the right hand lane and join the dual carriage way in the outside lane then move over to the left once on that dual carriage way?

  • @MotoEcosse

    @MotoEcosse

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey, Dave. It depends on the rules of that roundabout. For example, you want to take the second exit, so on approach you may be able to use both the left and the right lane. In that case you would stay in whatever lane you've chosen when taking the exit. If that exit only has the option for using one lane on approach, again this could be either the left or right depending on the roundabout rules, although this is usually the left lane unless signs state otherwise, ideally you would want to exit onto the dual carriageways left lane. Different roundabouts have different rules. Signs and road markings are key to navigating them safely.

    The examples in the video are mainly for exits that have at least 2 lanes. So you would be fine to stay in the right lane and continue in the right lane providing it's clear. You can also choose to move over to the left lane if it's clear, just like you would in a car. The choice is yours. If it's a single lane exit, then yes you're correct, you would apply the exact same method as a car would. It all depends on how many lanes your exit has. Hope this helps.
