Your tone in this video is one of the best jazz guitar tones I've ever heard. Clean, just enough brightness and clarity without being too bright. Also your explanation of students having residual damage from jazz school is awesome, I tell my students the same thing haha, nothing wrong with triads! Amazing stuff man, thanks so much.

Wow there is a lot of stuff to find in this lesson. The bass note melody thing is great, and something I guess we naturally work on eventually, but as tool for outlining in the way demonstrated is a great practice. And that voicing at 3:49of Eb minor with with Db bass with the ninth is beautiful. Never played that chord. I'll never be able to forget it now and will probably try to over use it as best I can

Great video, breakdown, and explanation for this terminal novice. Subscribed and notifications turned on. As a former linguistics professor, at 19:30 ... I like the way you try to describe the 'jazz attitude' as embodied by Monk. I like to call it 'pro-socially subversive' - the direction I think great art and a liberal arts education should aspire. By the way, me coming from a bossa background, I also really like Kenny Rankin's version of the song. My favorite jazz ballad, along with 'Lush Life' (especially Natalie Cole's version).

Pro-socially subversive! Very interesting. I have decided to keep politics out of my lessons but this is interesting. I think players like Monk, Miles and others had this dimension to their art. I also feel this this has been lost in todays Jazz. I could be wrong. As a linguist you could give my English lessons 🤓

It the old minor chromatic decending voice the same as My funny Valentine just in eb- instead of c- . The chords eb- eb-/M7 eb-7 to eb-6 which gives you a choice to treat it as c-b5. The other version is just using strong bass motions by treating that harmony as a series of II V bass movement subs. I use both for variety on the repeat “ memories always start etc” most of the time if your listening in ensemble situations the same ideas will fit both you just have watch clashes with the bass line in the two different “routes”. Its a mad tune. Good idea to raise ambiguity for neophytes didactic sake though. Its a great progression to ponder as the counterpoint can be played many different ways on chordophones depending on which voice your going to place the chromatic minor cliche into. Wes plays the melody really low that really set the standard as it binds with feel of the tune.

Hi Mikko! What a supercool video- you made it very clear that it’s better to trust your ears than a page of chords out of the realbook ( isn’t that the realbook that has been transcribed by Steve Swallow- sorry Steve!) ... I mean writing down a minor tonic instead of a major tonic is really criminal 👮‍♀️( sorry Steve again)

This was quite challenging, might have been a bit more manageable if you just had the lead sheet showing now and again for reference (I just googled it and referenced that as we went thru). It would be really nice on the points where you discuss divergences with the real book. Either way, very helpful video.

Which version of the real book do you have? I'm looking at hal leonard, sixth edition, and the last 4 bars of the B section are [Ab-7 F-7 Bb7 | C-7b5 F7 | Db9 B9 | Ab-7 F-7 Bb7] whereas at 12:50 you say the real book says [Ab-7 Db7 Gb^7 | B7 Bb7 | Eb7 Db7 | B7 Bb7]. The version I see in the real book is a lot more like what you mention at 12:57, which you aren't sure where it's from, it might be from Monk live at the Blackhawk

As a reward, I have an inside line tip for you. A young Monk was reading from the fake book, and some of those bizarre accidentals are from the re-harmonization's he did not yet know when reading the stripped down chart. Try it, yet go back in time before you were taught. You will stumble onto the technique he used to good effect later in his career. The accidentals used to reharmonize the melody of the tune are not employed, yet the new chords are, in other words. That sort of disjointed style is not really genius, yet it's sounds like he's from outer space.

  • @jonwiddicombe101

Like most tunes with a lyrical tune, if you base your solo around the melodies guide tones and resolve your phases well you wont get too out of shape unless you want to as the the bass line regardless of its approach complements the melody. The tricky bit is Wes delves into the guitars real bass register in his melody. These are the places to be wary of soloing. Luckily Ive never heard it much faster than Sarah Vaughans tempo so you have time and thats why God invented slurs 😂

Sorry - I was waaay wrong. It is Eb (but yea, major - ends on Eb6, which I expect is why. Sounds nice at the end, anyway.) - apparently my ability to read key signatures has significantly diminished. I don't have my physical copy, just a pic of the page, so I can't check the publication info. I believe it was published by Hal Leonard, though, for whatever that's worth.

@@jgravy82 It should have six flats. Sometimes you write Jazz tunes with no key signatures but this tune is definetily in Eb minor so six flats. If you have Eb major? then you might be looking at an Eb version of the Real Book? Transposed for alto sax? Then the tune would be in C minor which shares the same key signatures as Eb major. I don"t understand why it would be in major the tune is im minor? Even though the last chord is Eb major. You need a concert real book, not a transposed one.
