ROUGH CROSSING TO A REMOTE ISLAND (The Wild Atlantic Way || West Cork)
Despite further storms hitting Ireland we take a wild boat trip over to a magical island in West Cork.
We are Tom and Iz - a couple from Cornwall who decided to hit the road and embrace a new way of life, living and exploring in our tiny home on wheels, La Bamba. We invite you along with us on our adventures in our weekly vlogs. We love to embrace adventure and soak up nature every day! We're currently traveling around Ireland in our transit van along the Wild Atlantic Way. Ireland has really stolen our hearts; come along with us on this week's episode as we continue to explore wild West Cork. If you've missed our travels so far - check out our previous episodes, we upload weekly on a Sunday at 5pm :)
This week we wake up to a very stormy Bantry during the tail end of storm Eunice. We head to Skibereen to meet our friends Kate and Jake who travelled out to spend the week exploring with us. We head to where we are staying for the next few nights and we end up having a powercut on our first night, so we spend the night by the fire chatting.
Our first day of exploring takes us to Loch Hyne, a beautiful salt water lake, where we take on the Knockomagh Wood Nature Trail, and we enjoy the calm after the storm. We introduce you all to Kate and Jake and Jake treats us to some interesting facts about jakes favourite bird, the gannet! We continue our stroll around the lough and are just blown away by it's beauty! After a quick coffee break at our bnb we head off again to Toe Head. We indulge in a hot tub dip that evening and a warm cooked meal by Jake and Kate!
The next day we head out to Baltimore where we are due to catch a ferry to Cape Clear. Isabel and Kate are nervous when the captain tells us it is going to be extremely uncomfortable and rough! But we are only in Baltimore once and we wanted to go and see Cape Clear! We head right out into the choppy waters. It was a very rough crossing but quite exciting too! We all get completely soaked but the sun comes out on Cape Clear and we venture out to do a big looped walk around the island. We spot Fastnet rock, where a lighthouse lies that was built from Cornish granite slabs! It is the most southerly point of Ireland and lies 6.5km southwest of Cape Clear island.
We find little piglets, horses and ducks on the island and just soak up Cape Clear's calming nature. We meet someone who lives on the island and he tells us all about the annual storytelling festival on the island, we are determined to return for it someday! After a cider at the local shop, we take the return journey back to mainland and our crossing that afternoon was a lot calmer!
The next day ,we enjoy our last hot tub session before moving on to our next bnb for the rest of the week. On our way to our next place to stay we drive up to the summit of Mount Gabriel, and to our surprise La Bamba manages to drive all the way to the top! Now that saves the ol' mountain legs! We admire the views and feel exhilarated by the strong winds!
We arrive at our next house for the last bit of our week with Kate and Jake and we can't believe the drive to get there - right along the sea's edge! We discover a wood fired sauna and Jake treats us to a little tune on the guitar, then that evening Tom proceeds to thrash us all at Catan!
We wake to snow the next day and head to Mizen head, where unfortunately the visitor centre is closed but we can still take in the breath taking views of the raging sea below the cliffs! Unfortunately Three Castle Head is closed at the moment too for environmental reasons due to erosion due to high numbers of visitors. We were recommended to visit by lots of you lovely viewers so we must return when it's open another time! Our next stop is Barley cove where the floating walkway to get across the water is closed but we still get to appreciate a walk across the sand, despite the bitter icy weather! We feel we have earnt a cold pint in O'Sullivans pub in Crookhaven. That evening we enjoy the perks of having an oven and Isabel makes a hearty oven baked meal for us all.
Our final day with Kate and Jake has the best weather of the week so we head to Sheep's Head Peninsula to set out on the Glanlough Loop, a 15.4 km walk taking in the views of the Beara Peninsula from afar. Poor Kate ends up thigh deep in a big bog but we trek on and have a much awaited picnic. To our delight the pub at the carpark where we finish is open so we soothe our aching legs with a refreshing cider. We try out the bnb's wood fired sauna and natural cold water pool on our final night together, and sadly have to say goodbye the following day to Kate and Jake. We move back into the van and get back into the swing of living in a small space.

Sorry its taken a while to watch this, but it was totally worth it. Kudos to whoever books the airbnbs, they looked mega. And you can always tell how lovely people are by the friends they keep x❤️

We visited Clear island with beautiful weather eight years ago. Great experience. Mizen head was great but very foggy when there. Your video’s bring back great memories.
Aaa this was brilliant folks! Great watch, good to see you all enjoyed yourselves, got plenty done. No doubt your friends enjoyed every minute of it. And this week's element of risk taking was the boat ride 😂 you took some hammering there lol. Also, great learning about more celtic connections back to Cornwall!!

Great video guys! Shame the weather in Bantry wasn't good! On Fridays it's market day and the town is usually bustling with artisan food producers, Locally roasted coffee etc... Brilliant for a walk around the square on a fine day to see all the different stalls! Really enjoyed seeing Cape Clear as I've never been but will someday soon hopefully! Guys, Gougane Barra has strong early Christian links with Saint Finbarr and the ancient Camino….departing the Cork coast often for Cornwall en route to Santiago de Compostela.

Bless you both, ye are really getting loads in, lovely ye had your very good friends over. Ye were in a good few of my haunts in the past week. Loughine is lovely to swim in,warmer than the sea i love the hill walk there. Much nicer day today,i hope ye had the great weather, wherever ye were. Gabriel is a great walk too, think the pink house you see from there is Jeremy Irons house. Nice pint of guinness ye had, a good head on it. Thanks for sharing, loved the B&Bs.

The amount of walking u do you will have walked the whole way around the coast lol. The hill walking along the coast is something else. You both look to be have a great time here in Ireland

Hi good evening Marcus haha we do a lot of lazing in bed too! I just loved walking in ireland though I really want to come back and walk the whole of the Beara way and the Kerry way with a tent and a backpack! To really take in the sights!
Last week when you said this week was on an island I was so hoping it would be Cape Clear and it was!!! I’m so happy because I’m about 8 more weeks I am going to be on Cape Clear too!! And some of the other places you’ve been since Galway. I can’t wait. Love your vlogs so much. Thanks for them and your energy and enthusiasm- I’m a lot older than you guys but I still have my moments lol. Take care.

Beautiful place. I once watched a cormorant catching a fish in the regent’s canal in bow east London. It was so nice to see nature in the city. I always associated cormorant birds with the ocean but there it was to see in east London. Happy travelling 👍

A big THANK YOU for the preview of Cape Clear Island. Now I want to see it more than ever. You gave me just enough to whet my apatite. I wanted to see more, but that will have to wait until around June 1st. I will be going over to Cape clear from Schull where I have a Airbnb booked, thanks for the preview of there as well. Looked like Schull would be a great place to stay - lots of lovely little cafes and pubs :) Have the best time on Cape Clear and if you can try to visit the goat farm - we missed it and apparently its a great experience!

Hi guys always gr8 to catch-up with friends, van life at times can be quite lonely when spirits are low, I saw how your mood changed upon seeing them that was cool you guys looked much happier and when I travelled South Africa we had power cuts everynite quite sad, and to be honest I would of argued with the captain of that ferry, that to me was shocking...lol, take care guys much love from new zealand🥰🇳🇿

Hello again. Another great vlog. You really do cover so much of the places you visit and the footage is quite incredible. That's what makes you different to other vanlifers' vlogs I've watched. There is far more content and depth to them. I'm off to England later this week to the Cheltenham Horse Racing Festival for the final two days of it and given your current location I'm passing on a tip for the second race(2.10pm) on the Friday. The name of the horse is WEST CORK and I think he has a solide each way chance @8/1. He's a course and distance winner and the trainer/jockey combination of Dan and Harry Skelton have won this particular race twice in the last six years. As it's a Festival it'll be ultra competitive but if he finishes in the first five you get your money back. Until the next time, good luck!

When you were at curlly khan bay in ne Scotland you were a few miles out from the largest colony of gannets on mainland Britain Troop head is the name of the nature reserve a nice walk too x

That was brill. Great to see you having a good time with your friends. We visited Cape Clear Island as part of a whale watching trip out of Baltimore with Whale Watch West Cork and it was fab, albeit it was warmer and less choppy when we were there. Dunno if you spotted my comment on a previous vid, but if you visit beautiful Kinsale, make sure you try the vegan breakfast in the Lemon Leaf cafe. It is really good 👍
