    Heads up - the shortcut for the Pen tool is (G), not (P). I had changed my keyboard shortcuts recently to make P the pen tool in After Effects and forgot to change it back. Sorry for the confusion! -Robbie

    Rotoscoping is easier if you make masks separating the parts of the object. With less points to control, the easier it gets to animate the masks. And sometimes it avoids doing the work frame by frame. You can interpolate the movement, so it’s less hazle than moving multiple points frame after frame. \o/

    @@Chribit can you use mask in After Effects like you do mask in Photoshop. In Photoshop you can perfectly trace any object including hair etc. using mask, can you do the same in After Effects

    @@shutterstocktutorials After five tries and losing a couple of hours, I discovered that I had to choose the stopwatch in After Effects and not my real stopwatch! Duh....

    Thanks so much for this! I'm trying to rotoscope a quick 7sec video using the rotobrush and its taking forever-do you have any recommendations on how to speed up the process? I'm on macbook pro with 16GB of memory. It seems like any tiny adjustment I make takes 5mins to "propogate" and only gets longer with each adjustment!

    I used to hate the pen tool, but made myself learn it and now it's easy and less of a hassle. I spent one all-nighter cutting out objects from pictures. If you can remember when and how to use the Alt/Option Key and Control/Command/Apple key, it will come together for you. THAT and how to continue a path.

    Great tip on using the refine edge tool, my only complaint is the propagating. My Lil 13inch Pro M1 fan kicked on big time to render my roto on a green background.

    Thanks for the video. You made it sound super easy. My question is it only worked for the first three seconds when I ran it with my other comp. Do I need to do it again and again. It jumped back into the original background. Or is this a Ram issue? I do have an older Mac with only 8GB or RAM.

    Good tutorial. I just wish you had magnified when selecting menu options (such as selecting "Stopwatch") as we cannot actually see anything as to what you are selecting.

    Lo-hove this! Also, I notice it takes so much time to propogate! I have a dynamic link from PP and I went to edit the original because I missed some frames (should have watched your video- my roto took 13hrs so I ignored some spots but now I want to fix them. I used a proxy set up in premiere but still, my computer is taking a long time to get through this. Also, I didn't see you mention freeze and unfreeze. I unfreezed so I could use the rotobrush again in my layer on the frames that need touch up. Oh, I also want to use that skin color changing effect... I'm subscribing. Thanks for any answers!

    Do you have tips for rotoscoping footage that is heavily shadowed and it is hard for AE to get a good read background vs actor? Traditional old school roto?

    I'm new to After Effects. I have rotoscoped some footage into 2 parts. I have then isolated them and precomposed them separately. When I add the precomp into the main composition that I need them for it seems the mask changes. It removes sections that were not removed before. Any tips?
