Rothenburg o d T - Part 4 of 4: Spitalkirche, Franziskaner Kirche, City Hall Tower, Hell & Nighttime

In this episode of Searching for History, Erin, my brother Sterlin and I, continue our visit to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany. Rothenburg is a town in the Franconia region of Bavaria. It was a free imperial city from the late Middle Ages to the beginning of the 19th century. During Rothenburg’s height, from around 1100 to 1400, it was an important stop along Europe’s trade routes. It declined after occupation and sacking during the Thirty Years War, which occurred between 1618 and 1648. It is famous for its well-preserved medieval old town and its intact town wall. It is a highlight on the Romantic Road through southern Germany. This video is Part 4 of a series of videos on Rothenburg. In this episode we will visit the Spitalkirche zum Heiligen Geist, and then we will take a look at the Franziskanerkirche or Franciscan church. After that we will climb to the top of the city hall tower, then visit our favorite restaurant, “Hell.” Lastly, we will experience Rothenburg at night.

It's interesting how the Church of St. Johannes has ventilation "eyes" in its roof design. The use of this feature is much touted in the Saxon-Romanian town of Sibiu, but it's clear where it originated. Great view from the tower!

I have seen those ventilation eyes in other buildings in Germany, Schloss Weesenstein in Saxony comes to mind. Unfortunately, it wont let me paste a picture in this reply! (I posted it on my Community Tab.) I don't normally have fear of heights but being at the top of the city hall tower was a little too thrilling!

There are quite a few fairytale towns and villages in Germany. But Rothenburg ob der Tauber is one of the most visited ones. Nördlingen, Dinkelsbuehl are also worth a visit and are not too far away from Rothenburg.

About 20 years ago I visited Dinkelsbühl. It is definitely a beautiful walled town. I have driven passed Nördlingen on the Romantic road but did not stop. Isn't Nördlingen the town that was built in a giant meteor crater? In a few weeks, on May 5th, we are having a video coming out where we discuss the topic of other fairytale towns that might be a contender (has the same qualities) for Rothenburg odT. Hopefully you will like it. Thanks for watching!
