Romanized Russian Lyrics:
Kto Kabul, kto Fajzabad,
Kandagar, Dželalabad.
Vspominaet každyj službu neprostuju,
Na Salange - trassy, risk,
Farah-Rud ili Girišk
I bagramskuju betonočku rodnuju.
V pamjati hranim my dni,
Kto Hinžan, a kto Gazni,
Nu a kto, kak on, služil v Asadabade.
No kuda ni poverni,
My vojuem zdesʹ odni,
Slovno, tam, pod Laškargahom my v zasade.
A vojna vedʹ - lotereja žestokaja,
I my rvalisʹ vse domoj, služa tam.
A teperʹ smotrju na foto, serdce ëkaet -
Vot by snova mne projti po tem mestam,
A teperʹ smotrju na foto, serdce ëkaet -
Vot by snova mne popastʹ v Afganistan.
Vsë pohože bylo, brat - provody, voenkomat,
Karantin, učebki, pylʹnye dorogi,
Strelʹby nočʹju, strelʹby dnëm
I istošnyj krik "Podʺëm!",
My sbivali pozvonki, stirali nogi.
Parašjutnye pryžki i, konečno, marš-broski,
A komu-to snjatsja tanki ili puški.
Samolëta žëstkij pol, kto kolonnoju pošël
Ot Termeza, Hajratona ili Kuški.
Po trevoge my v Gerat - tam nalivniki gorjat,
I kolonna v ognevoj zavjazla drake.
Nadoedlivyj pesok i stremitelʹnyj brosok
Na ukreprajon Masuda v Bazarake.
Ne delilisʹ my nikak - ukrainec ilʹ rusak,
Belorus, kazah, tadžik ili tatarin.
Na razdely vse pljuju, iskrenne rebjat cenju,
Teh, kto sdali svoj na mužestvo èkzamen.

It reminds me of a scene from a movie. After a battle between white army and red army, soldier asks the priest if they should bury reds with whites and priest replies that God didn't paint them different colors. We call ourselves different nationalities like Russian, American, German etc. but in the end we're all humans. It's scary and sad that we're the ones that divided us.

"I wish I could go to Afghanistan once again"...How many soldiers, from even before Alexander's era of conquest, have said the same exact sentence after their service, doing their part as literal kids, not knowing anything but war after it ends? How many of their mates lay dug in that dry, sandy and stony soil. Afghanistan has that unique sort of a zing to it. Unique only to it. It's not Chechnya, not Vietnam, not South America or Asia, not Iraq, not Balkans, not Europe. Completely different, from both the soldiers' perspectives and actual military goals. A shithole of Biblical proportions, good for nothing but dying and dying alone. I love Kipling's poem verses. "When you're wounded and left on Afghanistan's plains, and the women come out to cut up what remains, jest roll to your rifle and blow out your brains and go to your gawd like a soldier." A dusty, hot hovel for soldiers to die in, for countries and empires to gradually crumble away after not having anything else to invade.

To be honest, I think the closest thing to Afghanistan was Vietnam. Both wars had this feeling of nonsense, of constant fear and melancholy. The Russians were resigned and became melancholic of the Graveyard of Empires, while the Americans protested the war and became savages. Despite being mostly desertic, Afghanistan feels cold and isolated, while Vietnam is lush and smothering with its humidity and napalm. I don't know if there's such a video, but a discussion between veterans from Vietnam and Afghanistan would be incredible: Similar experiences of pointless imperialist wars against a people armed by their enemies, yet two very different settings and feelings.

huuuh, Taliban has basically control of all the country except for some areas. The so called resistance are disorganized, outmanned, and outsuppplied. Really, Afghanistan isn't hard to control if you are brutal like the Taliban and that you also know the terrain. Just a dang shame that the Afghan army was filled with a bunch of cowards and corrupt leaders. At the same time, I don't blame Afghans as Afghanistan should have never became a country like Yugoslavia. It should be partioned by ethnic groups.

This is how Soviet soldiers came out of Afghanistan. Calmly, neatly according to the plan, with a proudly raised head! The Soviets left behind a CIVILIZED LIFE in Afghanistan! - peace, working power plants and life support services, new infrastructure and equipment, schools, hospitals and civil liberties. If Gorbachev/ Yeltsin had not refused to supply Najibullah with fuel and spare parts for our equipment, the Afghan army could have held the secular regime for more than 3 years. But... And now look at the shameful flight of Americans from Afghanistan. First, America helped the Islamists to fight the Soviets and with civilization in Afghanistan, then these wild Islamists defeated America and drove it away!

Somewhere on the internet, I found the translated notes of the Soviet Politburo which started with back-patting for their successful special operation "Storm 33." After the installation of a pro-Soviet Afghan government, there was more optimistic dicussion about moving Soviet forces into the country and reinforcing the rural mujahaddin who were the new government's opposition. Over time, the internal discussions bore a startling similarity to the confidential discussions amongst American defence and security agencies about the course of the Vietnam War. Optimism turned to frustration as the human and economic costs far exceeded the early expectations. Like Vietnam, the allied government was non-existent outside of the capital, and much of the allied army wasn't as determined and capable as the enemy forces. Discussion went from trying to come up with a successful stategy to finding a way out without looking like they'd been defeated to losing intest in how things looked. Gorbachev, like Gerald Ford, was just the guy who happened to be in office when the inevitable got around to happening.

Do you need words? This song?
