No shit the ship has been pirated! The captain stated on the previous day that they were told by the chase vessels to slow down. Then they determined that the chase vessels were actually fishermen. Why the hell would fisherman tell a merchant ship to slow down??? I was thinking that was odd and sure enough the next day the pirates take it.

Honestly, I wish we could just have cargo vessels to be armed with a minigun or just a couple of machine guns. Doing it this way with helicopters is incredibly inefficient. If you get there before they've boarded the ship, sure you can do something. But in this case, we're paying a bunch of money to have HMS Northumbria down there. The question is, how many pirate attacks do they stop compared to cases like this one where they can't do anything in fear of harm coming to the crew? It'd be much better to just have a few armed people on board the cargo ships, as they'd always be there, ready in case a pirate skiff comes along.

  • @BrokeCanadian

Exactly, it's sickening to say the least. I've always compared this things to the whole gun law ordeal here in the US. Most people who read this won't agree with the right's decision to keep guns, but this documentary is a good comparison. To put it simple, whether legal, or illegal, it is VERY easy to get a firearm here in the US. Most criminals believe it or not, DO NOT legally purchase firearms, they purchase "ghost guns" which are registered to nobody and are completely untraceable. Sure every now and then some deranged idiot will get a hold of his buddy's legally owned gun and goes and does something stupid, but that is completely inevitable no matter how strict gun laws are. If someone wants to commit a crime with a firearm, they are not going to care about breaking a gun law. And when guns become hard to acquire legally, the prices of the "ghost guns" will SKYROCKET, and that money will go into the hands of the suppliers. MUCH like the merchant ships that are pirated, if schools, office buildings, libraries, places of worship, etc. were able to have ARMED GUARDS IN THEM, the shootings would become less frequent, and those that did happen would have a much greater chance of being diffused with minimum tragedy. An armed nation is a safe nation, back in the day nobody was so willing to rob you or gun down a movie theater, because most of the people in that movie theater would be carrying. The majority of people are too soft to carry these days though. And for those in nations that have very strict gun laws, who claim that the "crime rate is lower because people don't walk around with guns", Yeah you're right, you PROBABLY won't get shot, but you will probably have a cup of acid thrown in your face as an alternative, or be beaten and robbed by some dudes on a moped. And when someone over there decides they wanna shoot something or someone, they are going to go illegally purchase a gun and do so. You all picture the US as a crime ridden country where you are basically guaranteed to be robbed at gunpoint or shot, but that is only because those are the only things the media relays over to you. How often do you see a crime prevented because thankfully somebody was carrying compared to hearing about a shooting or something? Personally, when I have access to a firearm I feel safer than ever, and when I am surrounded by other coherent Americans who value their safety from the deranged and a corrupt government, I am thankful that weapons are so easy to get a hold of. They are the only thing stopping our government from overtaking our freedom, and our streets from being polluted with crime. An American politician who wants to strip us of our guns, is a politician who is OPENLY ADMITTING, that they want more control over the people, and want to strip us of our only defense from them. Fortunately it is impossible for our guns to be taken away, when that day comes when they show up at our door for our guns, and it will, there will be an uprising. The government will not have the assistance of our military, because the military would never turn on our country, and the people will do exactly what the country needs, and overthrow the government. Our laws are extremely outdated, and need to be reformatted according to the countless advances in science and technology over the last hundred years. Sadly, that will not happen with the current Republican and Democratic games that are being played election after election. These power hungry monsters need to be booted from the system, and the people need to take over and reform the government, even if it takes a civil war. Every part of the nation is flawed and people's feelings are preventing anything from being done about it, and when the day comes that it all changes, we are going to be VERY thankful for the second amendment.

Worthless waste of taxpayer money. No country or private security has full jurisdiction to perform military actions on foreign vessels that's why there is not much anyone can do about it. It all comes down to politics. Also keep in mind a lot of these heists are done by the merchant ship owners them self. They insure the cargo and stage the entire thing and claim the insurance money. There is a lot more than meets the eye.

I was down in St. Thomas where hundreds of boats including multi million dollar top of the line yachts have been left to be sunk by the hurricane that hit that place. The owners are claiming they have no idea where their boats are, but they are all in that harbor and some of those boats are from Florida. People intentionally sailed to the area they knew was going to get hit hard and anchored the boats there. This is not from me this is from the locals that live there and they say this is a very common tactic.

@@patman0250 they do fight. But they have to pick their moment carefully. They go in when they don't expect it, when they know the hostages are not held at gun point. It's not the ship they want to save. It's the people onboard. And that job will go to a kind of special forces who go in on land.

Because there were speed boats surrounding it and a mothership and then the mothership is said to be a fishing vessel, where did the speed boats go off too in the first distress call? Didn't anyone think to place a team on the Saldanha since it was a likely target because they tried already and it is a low easy ship to board.
