Yeah. And the analogies with “With or Without You” by U2? I mean, the moment he embreces her waist is EXACTLY the cover of one of the U2’s cover. Maybe it was not wanted, but it makes everything more real.

Fun fact: Schwimmer's acting was so good here, where he hugged Rachel and she started crying, those were real real tears, I heard Aniston started crying for real.

I never realised how toxic Ross was in this scene and how well David pulls it off. The way he flips thirty times between begging for forgiveness from Rachel and blaming Rachel is unreal, but it feels so real; like a man clinging at any straw to keep this relationship together.

Had he simply said to her at the first instance. Rachel, we need to talk. I made some very poor choices last night and led me to make some truly bad choices. What *I* want does NOT matter any more. What matters is how you feel *we* if there is any *we* after this should proceed. And I will completely understand and stand by your decision. Just know that it was never my thoughtful, conscious intention to hurt you, but I did. Last night, after the where Mark was in your apartment, I lost it and me and the photocopy girl slept together. I was pretty drunk, but that's no excuse...just telling I did not do this with a clear mind. I am so, so sorry. I just can't lie to you about this. That might have painted Ross in a different light. But in this scene he is toxic. She asks him to leave several times and he stays. It ain't like that's an apartment they share. Best thing would have been to leave and give her space and let Rachel decide what happens. WHY? Because he defined their *new* starting point if there is one!

What I don’t understand is why the writers made him go this far. Going to bars and sleeping with the first woman that jumps on him was NOT on his priority list when he broke up with carol. I get it, she traumatized him, but come on, if you don’t have it in you, you don’t just develop it, and even then, it’s been what, 2-3 years in this time period since the divorce? See a therapist dude, your partner should be allowed to choose how much of your bs to put up with. Oh and when Ross said he doesn’t cheat? Um, did everyone just simply forget Julie? Honestly Ross is one of the biggest reasons I never got into Friends like that. Ross is a very selfish, toxic, possessive and manipulative person throughout the entire show. He not a nice guy he's a "nice guy" if that makes any sense. I understand him making a mistake by sleeping with someone else, I understand him wanting Rachel back but if he really cared about her he would've A. Told her what happened directly after it happened and B. Told her everything and then leave the fate of the relationship in her hands. Not saying that's the easiest thing to do in that type of situation but when you really love and care for someone and want the best for them it's not about you. How you feel doesn't matter or at least it doesn't matter not nearly as much as the person who is in the right in the situation. If he had just said what he had to say and then just given her space and let her decide what to do THAT would've been truly loving and caring about her. He messed up. He fucked up. The least he could do to make it up to her is give her enough space to let her sort out her feelings and if it turns out she did want to end it well then oh well...she wants to end it. It sucks but if you love someone you got to let them go. Like I said Ross never really cared about her or at least not as much as he cared about himself.

In my eyes the problem wasn't ever "We were on a break" or " We weren't on a break." Becuase they were, Rachel was even the one who initiated it. But I don't think that was ever the problem, the problem in my eyes was that, Ross got drunk the night of and went to a club and slept with some random girl and then tried to lie about it, when in reality he should've told Rachel when she went to his apartment the next morning to ask if they could still be together. And yes, I know Rachel had Mark over the same night, but if anyone remembers correctly, she actually told Mark not to but he insisted and just invited himself over. And while Ross was sleeping with some random girl, Rachel was trying to call him saying that she wanted to fix them.

Bullshit. Ross called Rachel while he was at the bar and Ross overheard Mark's voice on the phone. Rachel tried to lie and say "it's no one" but Mark spoke again and Ross asked, "Is that Mark?" Why the hell did Rachel even allow Mark up there? That moment + "we need a break from us" gave Ross all the information he needed to believe she wants to break up and sleep with Mark. Everything that happened the next morning is a related, but different matter.

@@PrimeSuperboy Mark was there bcs he invited himself over. He wanted Rachel and knew him being there for her would give him a chance. I always think that him speaking when Ros called was on purpose, so he could give him that idea. Rachel tried to hide it bcs she knew Ros was paranoid about Mark and didn't want to hurt him more, but Ros heard him and got himself the idea of them together. Even though nothing had happened between Rachel and Mark. She told him off and tried to contact Ros again but he already got the idea to sleep with someone else to hurt her the same way he thought she hurt him bcs from the beginning his insecurities about himself got over him and ruined the relationship. They were on a break but that still doesn't justify his sleeping with somebody else the night they went on a break, bcs simply when people go on a break, you give some rules what is alowed or what is not and if you don't recieve them, you don't go inviting other girls into bed with you.

I feel for Rachel. I had relationship like this before I met my husband. We really loved each other. At least I did. ) But one day after we had fight he slept with another woman. He begged to forgive him, that he was drank and upset. At that time I still loved him, but it was so disappointed. I couldn’t forgive, even I didn’t want to see him anymore. It hurt me a lot. I decided to move on. And now I have a great husband, two sweet sons. I am happy. I’m grateful for everything.

They were/weren't on a break is a long debate but him sleeping with somebody hours after a breakup when they haven't even talked what a "break" means to each of them properly (He just walked out) shows how important that realtionship was for him. And then having the audacity to crawl back as if nothing happened and throwing it all on Rachel alone when they both fucked up. (Ik Rachel did that too in that letter.) He chose to do something according to his assumptions. Fine. Now own up to your actions and don't expect others to accept your choices that clearly were hurtful to them. That's assholery. And Rachel asking for a break is wrong? People in relationships sometimes need some space to get their shit done without having to juggle between so many things and not giving anything enough. She asked for a break, didn't go out and sleep with someone else Also the fact that she said most of that outta frustration and that shows by the fact that she called him hundreds of times the very same night. Let's be mature. People say shit in anger.

Ross is the toxic version of a nice guy who hides behind a goofy exterior. All Ross manages to do for ten seasons is prove why he is an awful romantic partner and how he never works to change, no matter how badly he needs to, one of the worst man

I hate how he says "are you going fight for us or just bail?" No. Just no.

He was broken and insecure about Mark, even Joey stated that the actions mark did probed mark had other intentions, as Rachel didn’t take in Ross’s suspicions and just got annoyed about it which is what lead them to a break, and of all the people she brought to the apartment, she brought mark, and as soon as ross heard Mark, he was broken, because he believed they were broken up and Male and her were together, which pushed him over the edge

He was her only friend in this brand new job in fashion world, thays why she wss so excited. And Mark never made a move on Rachel while she was with Ross. He asked her on a date weeks after they officially broke up. Which ended up badly because after the date Rachel rejected him. Because she NEVER saw him as a romantic partner as she told Ross many many times. See, the problem is that just the mention of Mark's name made Ross jealous, not what Mark did himself. And Mark showed himself on Rachel's apartment, she never invited him over. Its still no reason enough to go have sex with someone else. If he really thought Rachel was sleeping with someone else after their supposed 'break up', then thats just shows how little he thought of her and how little respect she had for her, and their relatiomship. She is better off without someone like him.

Watching this again and being reminded of how awful it was makes me even more annoyed at Ross for not taking responsibility and even joking about it. It was made into this argument about whether it was a break or not when in reality I don't think it matters. I would feel incredibly hurt if my boyfriend slept with someone the same night we broke up even if it was a "proper" break up. It would definitely change the way I thought about him.

Not remotely defending Ross here because his actions and choices were indefensible, but most people really only ever make poor choices, commit bad acts when they're emotionally wounded, hurt, vulnerable, and dismayed. I'm not that into Friends but I've watched enough clips and episodes of the show to safely say that Ross Gellar is one of the biggest dicks in all of TV. Even regardless of this scene he's an extremely selfish, possessive and manipulative person. He's funny in the show I'll give him that but he's still a huge dick of a character. He never really cared about Rachel he only cared about himself. If he really cared about Rachel he wouldn't let the whole Mark thing bother him. If he cared about Rachel he would've understood how important her job was to her and that she just didn't have the time to be with him like that. He shows plenty of scenarios where he only cared about himself. He didn't care about her. He didn't care about their relationship he only cared about himself. Ross is a dick and I will stick to that analysis to whomever wants to say different.

@@Luke_existent These scenes are perfect because they portray perfectly how things may occur in the safety of a private conversation, like insulting wrongly joey because he's just a womanizer or her hitting him with the book or ross trying to kiss her towards the end to magically make things ok.. Just like rachel was so invested in ross never hurting her, I think ross was equally invested on the idea that when two parties want to hold a relationship, by taking a step out of it, is losing faith for the relationship. What I mean to say is, like Rachel's most important thing is that he would never hurt her, Ross' most important thing is whatever happens at the end of the day the most important thing is to believe in their relationship and Rachel jeopardized that. And Ross didn't take the safe road -took the wrong road to be exact- in this chaos to ensure more chances to have Rachel back. If he was out of line for attempting to get Rachel back afterwards, Rachel was out of line to expect she can take a piss on the relationship without consequence. Prooving to lose faith on the relationship is a very different state than having a big all-out fight. Rachel by the end seems to understand that and the true reason is she just can't move on from the actual consequence that was the worst-case scenario.

Whatever You want I think they mean throughout the entire series. In this circumstance they meant that after Ross was caught sleeping with another woman he kind of turned it around on Rachel, essentially blaming her, saying that if she had never called for their (totally reasonable) break then it wouldn’t have happened in the first place.

This is definitely an episode that a laugh track was not needed

I can't watch this scene without crying every single time 😪 the acting is unbelievable, you actually feel the hurt from Rachel's side and the regret and upset from Ross's side. Both actor's said they cried really after filming this scene that say's how powerful it was. Wow what talented and excellent actors they both are. Its such a believable and relatable scene 😪😪💜💙

That's because it's been very real for Jennifer. These things have happened to her in real life. My heart goes out to her. If I ever had the change to be in a relationship with her my days of looking at another is absolutely over. Period.

Thanks to the entire cast of Friends. They got me through some ups and downs in my younger life. I will never get tired of watching them. They truly are like an old friend.

Dramatic tension with Ross and Rachel, and awkwardly comedic with the friends being stuck in the room. The writing here is seriously gold!

This aggravates me so much when he cheated on her. He sent all that stuff to her office basically pissing everywhere marking his territory. he was so obsessed with her then but she finally confronts him and then he leaves their fight, and sleeps with the first person he sees. He then dared to say that she was the one walking out. Ross is my absolute least favorite character

OMG the acting here is incredible - I never realised how good it was until I have started to rewatch. Jennifer especially got it spot on especially with her resentful body language. Hats off to both of them - it’s goosebumps type of stuff

I mean yeah ross is a Piece of Shit, but she handled the situation (before the cheating) like an idiot. Hell, the guy did not get to see her in like a week, and when he goes to work to have a nice anniversary, she insults him and treats him like garbage. And then she goes “we should take a break”, allows mark to get in, which makes drunk ross think he was right to be jealous, and which totally destroys him, and he goes (and I wanna point out, he was drunk) dancing with an hot girl; next thing he knows, he is in bed with her. Not to justify, but it took three people to break that relationship, and Rachel was one of them

If he was going to turn up, why didn't he just leave a nice mini gift from the picnic, give her a quick kiss and celebrated later with her. Instead, he unilaterally decided that her work wasn't important because it wasn't something dinosaur-related and just stressed her out more. Also, he finds it okay to turn up uninvited to her work but not to an apartment which he has open access to and his GF might be cheating on him with the guy he suspected was into her? It makes no sense.

no, it's fair. .yeah they were on a break.. so what? in the same night he went and slept with another woman despite the big love stuff and then the second day he wants everything as it was and she to be ok with it? sorry, if I was to be her I would have never accepted him back in spite the love because I could have never be sure that in though moments he could be trusted.. trust is a big thing and once destroyed even the big loves can't work without it.

Yeah, I've been back and forth on this for awhile. When he said "Do you really think I would've done that if I didn't think you and Mark were doing the same thing?" or something along those lines, I hate that shit. Two wrongs never make a right, it makes shit worse. And shit, before I go fuck someone after my partner tells me they want a break, I would love or care about them enough to keep my legs closed until I speak with said partner again and discuss what this "break" entails. Full on break up or just a breather? Might sound corny but seriously, communication is key.

Especially after not seeing Ross for quite awhile, being very rude mean and hurtful at work whether she was right or not to do so on their anniversary night excetera excetera. Yelling afterwards and then using that word breakup.. all the comments here. Except they're from people that are strong fans of these two being together, and probably female saying you can't be with another woman but me until I make the move myself first her something or other whatever

Since when did a break mean an opportunity to go have sex with someone else? A break, is a little time apart to make sure you both want the same things before deciding if a relationship is really what you want, but it does not and will NEVER mean, you can sleep with anyone you want to while on a break 🤦🏾‍♀️

Correct. Milk completely right or wrong to this. But my immediate response, although I would think I wouldn't do such a thing, feel for Ross. Him distraught, drinking alcohol, being seduced, one of which was her. But yeah, we can think about the respect and love he holds her Rachel and threw it out the window the very night she yelled and broke up with him

This scene is truly heartbreaking, and it felt so real. I mean, Jennifer and David nailed it with their performances, and I can sympathize with both Rachel and Ross. Definitely one of the best scenes in the show in terms of acting 🤭

She kissed Ross when he was with Julie ... Should've lowkey seen it coming.

When Rachel sat on the couch with Ross, and felt that pain, I felt it too.

This was so funny and entertaining and sad all at the same time. Damn David and Jen and the rest of the cast did one hell of an amazing job. Wow.

The loud music added in over the most emotional parts of the scene kinda ruins it tbh

Ross is one of the most problematic, pathetic and worst character in the history of fiction, Ross is a perfect example of a self-proclaimed “nice guy”. Incredibly self-absorbed, relentlessly disrespectful to others, and insistent that he must always get his own way @ He is not a good person: lets' take Bonnie first. Remember how infatuated he was with her? That was, until she shaved her head. His parents prized him and he thought it was fun to be mean with his own sister. He proposed to Emily keeping Rachel in mind. He attempted to get Rachel to stay back and miss a good job opportunity at Paris, convinced her with the promise (for the sake of)their ‘romance’. @ He's just way too Clingy.: And doesn't have a life of his own apparently. Carol made it clear that she was in love with SUSAN. BUT NOOOOO! NOT IN ROSS LAND! He just kept competing with Susan even when Carol needed help the most, resulting in a useless, annoying and TOTALLY avoidable (but somehow humourous happenings), like Ben's birth. Speaking of whom… He tries way too hard: he takes away Ben's Barbie doll in an attempt to make him 'not girly'. How pathetic! When Rachel was going to deliever the news of being pregnant with Emma, Ross thought she was going to confess her 'love' for him. How delusional can one get? Oh and he deserved that hit from Julie because he wasn't planning on telling her about his kiss with Rachel. He intended to keep it a secret so as to upkeep his only smooth relationship. He tried to sabotage Rachel and guilt her: done that on too many occassions… too much to remember. He totally over reacted about Monica having a relationship with Richard when he himself did something bad as a MINOR with his 50 y/o school librarian. Ross. Is. Creepy. Let's not forget the I HATE RACHEL CLUB: Just cause the loser couldn't get her to love him. The list is endless he's easily the worst one

One of my top five favourite scenes to ever play out on national television. I'm not going to say my part on the subject, as that would take wayyy too long now and I already know how I am when I really get into comments.. But just the crack of his voice at 6:21 on the "okay".. The whole emotion just dripping through that scene, the way the actors just let themselves go, flowing with their characters all the way... Man, this was acting... If dreams do come true maybe I'll be a that point someday. 💕

If I did what Ross did against my girl, it would be close to impossible to forgive myself. Would never dream of hurting a girl in any way in my life😭

If he had told her for the right reasons, I would get it but his crush on Rachel varied from creepy to obsessive over the course of the 10 seasons. Rachel did not deserve to find out this way. I will add that after this, I never wanted Ross and Rachel to get back together. He was controlling, obsessive and manipulative, and honestly his comment to her that Mark was only being nice to sleep with her was bang out of order! While they both end up being pretty toxic towards each other after this, she did not deserve to be treated this way. Rachel did nothing wrong. Ross did. Sorry for the rant, but this really reminds me of how my ex reacted when I got a new job working with a group of men. Looking back on this season and how Ross acted about Rachel's job, it's really similar to what happened to me, and it makes me see the season in a new way.

i was just listening to this doing something else and even if there was this loud backgroud music i still cried. i think we've all been there once, some caught and some are not. the point is it really hurts the both of you, it traumatized me and haunts me everytime, the feeling of breaking someone you've treasured a lot just because of a short moment.

Best scene ever. You can definitely tell those tears at the end are real. Love how everyone else was listening to the entire conversation 😂

After so many years and 4 the first time I'm watching this part.. believe it or not the way Ross is trying to see a way to make it work for his mistakes just cuts me deep, some how it just hurts me... it feels so so real... I even cried not gonna lie

The U2 needs to go. We lost half of Rachel's lines after the music started, including the big one.

The rest was good acting. But the scene where he runs in to Central Perk and she's just sitting there staring. Man.. that always gets me.

Couples fight and make up in a day or two. Now, if it’s been a couple weeks and nothing got resolved, I’d be more inclined say, yeah it’s not looking good. But Rachel realized she made a mistake and went to make up the day after the spat.

My god... they are such amazing actors.

BUT in saying that, Rachel has every right to feel hurt that he slept with someone a few hours after the break up and I would NOT have taken him back either. I see both sides of the argument but definitely with Rachel on this. For him to just sleep with someone right away a few hours after a break without fighting for you is a slap to the face and I wouldnt want someone like that in my life. Not to mention how insanely jealous and possessive he was acting during the lead up to the break up.

The way I see it, the break meant end of the relationship to Ross, so he could do whatever he wanted after that. Clearly, this definition was not the same as Rachel's definition of the break, which meant being on a pause, like stop hanging out or communicating for an indefinite amount of time, while still being in a relationship). Had she told Ross what she meant by a break, probably Ross wouldn't have slept with that other girl. Also, him sleeping with another girl a few hours after the break up was done out of being devastated. He was hurt from the break up and just rushed into someone else, so as to comfort himself. I don't think that he didn't care about Rachel or that he didn't respect the relationship enough to go sleep with someone the second the relationship ends. There's a lack of communication by both of them which led to all this situation. While I understand she was hurt because she didn't want to end the relationship and still cared about Ross and sees his action as cheating, she is to blame too.

Why does everyone keep forgetting that Ross did it only bcoz he thought Rachel was sleeping with Mark right after they broke up He didn't go out to cheat on her He called her to make things right but finds out that the guy he ws constantly worried about is with her girl in her apartment right after she broke up with him How would u feel if u were afraid of ur GF getting too close to someone, & then hours after ur breakup, u find that she is with the same person who is somehow a reason fr ur insecurities.....that just broke Ross completely & he went overboard At that moment he thought that this is over & he lost her forever He lost his ability to think rationally about it after that point The photo copy girl found her when he ws at his most vulnerable state in his love life I'm not saying Rachel getting hurt over it was unjustified....anyone would be deeply hurt by that But Ross being blamed fr it like Rachel didn't have any role in it is also unfair

With or without you in the back just making this scene comes more alive ....touched❣️

This broke my soul as a kid and even more as an adult because i can relate to the hurt.

As someone who see's himself relating too much to Ross, I can vouch that he was 100% in the wrong here. He had spent an entire season and a half trying to win Rachel's heart, and he at last got it. And when he finally got her, he smothered her, and when Rachel understandably pushed back, he let his impulses take control and at the first chance he got, he cheated. If he truly cared about Rachel, he would've trusted her with her male friends, and he would've tried to evaluate his own flaws and see how he could improve himself to strengthen the relationship. Instead, he see's himself as the good guy, and finds any excuse he can to pin the blame for his failure on Rachel. "We were on a break" is funny, but the fact that Ross would forever cling to that excuse show's that he is not worthy of Rachel's love, and they never should've gotten back together.

But she broke up with him . Ross was open to her about his insecurities but she didn’t care. The fact that she had Mark over, the person Ross had a problem with, that very night shows how she never cared about Ross’s feelings. Please don’t say he invited himself over , did he break the door down ? Ya I agree they shd never have gotten back together . Rachel is a toxic character and Ross was always too good for her .

​@@Scuderia47Break UP happened after she found out he cheated on her, break and break up are completely different terms with completely different meaning, it might have been a break but it was never a break up, ross is indeed a cheater ,he's one of the most toxic, egoistic and manipulative character ever, Rachel was a loyal woman who only loved him meanwhile he was hopping from one woman to another, cheated on Julie and Bonnie as well, was literally in love with 3 to 4 different woman, he's for the streets, mark was actually better than him, Ross is one of the worst character in fiction ... 🤷🏻‍♂

There's something absolutely amazing about the slightly hazy quality of the video. These days with the 4k and 1080p remaster, it looks nice and crisp but there's something about this low quality that just captures that 90s era, it's indescribable.

Rachel you chose him, now suffer, he cheated on Julie and Bonnie as well why did you ever thought he wouldn't cheat on you? As the saying goes once a cheater always a cheater see 🤷‍♂
