Sir,during the day only vessel A knows that the other vessel is overtaking or not but suppose if the vessel B have some problem in his radar and arpa...how will he come across to know whether she is at 22.5 degree abaft vessel A and should overtake

Good day Sir, when we say 22.5 deg abaft the beam then while taking bearing we take the other vsl's head, mid or stern?

Practically this will not make much of a difference. If you are looking at a ship say 8 to 10 nm away, i.e. 1852 x 8 or 10 meters away and a ship length of about 300 meters, what will be the angular difference between the bow and stern. You can work that out.

Sir in case target vsl is on our stbd quater and coming up exactly 22.5 aft the beam in that case what we can assume that target vsl is overtaking or crossing? Pls explain which is the case

Respected Sir, i have a confusion as you said vsl A is know that vsl C is overtaking by radar plotting (ARPA) as you described, Vsl C is doubt that she is overtaking or not so she act accordingly so the responsibility of Vsl C is to clear the vsl A (am i right )

Thank you Sir for this upload, really helpful for understanding the Rule. I have a doubt , in the example the sidelight is being show to have 5 degrees plus and minus. As per Annex I, the Horizontal cutoff should be between 1 to 3 degree, and Vertical cut off is 5 degrees. Should it not be 1 to 3 degrees plus minus 22.5 degrees abaft the beam? Can Vertical sector affect the judgement of a person watching from another ship, or is it only the horizontal one?

1 to 3 degrees is in the forward direction and abaft the beam is 5 degrees. The vertical sector of 5 degrees is to allow for pitching.

@@thecaptainschannel7206 Thanks Captain! So when we are more than 22.5 dgrs abaft the beam we are in a crossing situation without any doubt and we must keep clear of the vessel in front of us, right? And so when we are less than 22.5 dgrs we aren't in a crossing situation?

Sir there’s a doubt regarding rule 13 as during orals there’s a repeated failing quest. “If rule 13 is applicable in RV situation “?

I have addressed this in the video. There is a very old case study where courts had mentioned 5 Nm. At that time the max. speed of ships was about 15 knots. In today's day with container ships breezing at more than 25 knots, will this hold good?

Thank you, Appreciate your efforts in doing all this for us. I am repeating old question. 1. Pdv 22.5 abaft your beam is crossing hence depending on which side will determine give way and stand on. Q1. If target PDV is 22.5 abaft the beam on STBD side what is the own vsl action ? 2. How do you know 22.5 unless u r using radar. In that case yes crossing but if you are not sure then doubtful and overtaking rule says when in doubt assume overtaking. Q2. Without radar how to determine if it exaxt 22.5 abaft or more or less 22.5?

The forward vessel , which is probably being overtaken cannot be in doubt, as it knows its own heading and can calculate 22.5 abaft the beam. Hence this vessel is sure of overtaking or crossing. Its the vessel abaft the beam that may be in doubt.

Sir,one vsl is xactly 22.5 abaft the beam of our vsl ..who needs to keep clear??

Yes it is crossing since overtaking rule says coming up from direction more than 22.5 degrees an abaft the beam. Also need to understand in what context he asked the question. What were the questions before this one.

There is no criteria in rules as a general understanding once vessel is reached 5 milesfrom own vessel we cud say finally past n clear. This is also given in some court rulings.

You cannot be in doubt whether other vessel is overtaking you or not. Please listen to the videos attentively and this will become clear.
