It often, by the way, like dogs - is influenced on the breed of chickens. The breed seramas love humans - and have always been bred not for meat or eggs but to be pets. Aggressiveness has been bred out of them. In fact they have what is called “Table shows” sort of like a dog show - and if a male acts in any way aggressively to the other males he’s around he is disqualified. They are also judged on looks and posture. It’s like the antithesis of cock fighting. They are very small birds. The hens about the size of a dove.

We had multiple roosters from different breeds and they were all nice to both humans and their hens guess we got lucky 😊 Although we once had a rooster which got hatched from our own chicken's eggs, it failed miserably as he and a hen were the only hatchlings who managed to survive. When it got in his teen years he would often attack my very pink boots (i was like 8 years old at the time) and at those moments his father protected me by correcting his son. When the father died years later his son had to take over and it had turned into a very kind rooster just like his father, never attacking me again. His father teached him well and honestly his father was and still is my fav rooster not just because he protected me but it was our very first rooster and he was the kindest of them all both to humans and his hens. Theyre both dead for years now but im glad to have had such roosters, the ones we have now just feel different.

It is genetic. I have owned dozens of roosters and some are nice. Some are mean. Higher quality bred ones are less likely to be mean

They aren't "just chickens" They have emotions just like any other animal. A rooster will have a favorite hen. Roosters will protect their hens to the death. The rooster dance he does is a mating dance. But he doesn't seem to bother her with mating. Such a sweet story. ❤

I've heard this from other people who have backyard chickens (non-commercial breeders). He was beat up and pushed out. You gave him his lady. He doesn't have to compete for her. She is all his. He takes care of her as is his duty. He is a kind bird, a good rooster. Bless them both, and you folks.

We got my rooster from a neighbor who got some straight-run chicks the spring before and ended up with two roosters who fought each other bloody every day if they weren’t separated. We were ordering chicks for our first flock and he offered us a rooster. We figured we would help him out, because I did some research and convinced my parents that roosters were good in the flock. We didn’t have other chickens yet though - and even when the chicks came they were babies, so he was lonely every day free ranging. He even ran back to the other farm a few times because he wanted other chickens, and as inexperienced chicken owners we decided to put the young chicks out and see how he treated them. They were too little to be outside but it was summer and boiling hot out, and they were fine, presuming he accepted them…and he did. Most of them from that flock ended up going to different homes because we had to order a minimum of 20 birds but we didn’t need them all, and had more chicks coming later. But he loved them! This giant rooster was doing the mating dance for chicks who came up to his ankles! He was so kind and for a while acted like a mother hen to them. We still have two hens from that batch, and he still loves them the most.

Pigs are as smart as a human 3 year old! I saw this video once where a pig would purposely avoid stepping on flowers, and then later pick some of them to decorate her little pig house with! It was adorable

It's the reverse: they don't know what it means to be an animal, because empathy and strong bonds are 100% a common animal trait. We aren't that special in that regard.

Yeah, because it just isn’t fair that people only raise chickens for food! I mean, chickens can be just as good (if not better) pets than most of your random everyday household pets like lizards and such who don’t pay attention to you at all. Only people who have never owned chickens would say oh, you’re just anamorphizing them. No they have every ability to express themselves and they are as unique personalities as you or I. We had a hen that had to go in a sling after 10 years. Thanks for devoting to those animals that need quality care.

I’ve never had chickens but I owned pet rats for years and I can say it’s the same. Every single one has its own unique personality and variation in intelligence and interests. Some are eager to interact with humans and are very trainable. Several of my rats knew their names, would come when called, and perform tricks.

Owning chickens is a very different experience, I daresay even more different than owning cats and dogs. Once you actually take care of chickens, you will actually realize how complex and different they are than the rest. They display and show signs of emotion and sentience, exactly human-like and are just the most cutest things imaginable. I had many chickens throughout the years and though, unfortunately they passed away, I still continue to miss my Toast, Butter and Brownie very much

I had something like this between two of my chickens, Wendy and Tommy. Wendy had neurological problems, and ever since she was a day-old chick, she was special needs. There were three separate times I pulled her from the brink of death, and I loved that bird more than anything, and she lived with my pigeons so I could give her the care she needed. She was a little ginger and brown silkie. Tommy was a very huge, very docile rooster who I also raised from a chick. He arrived at my house, a runt, soaked in water and shaking, and the moment I saw him, I knew he was something special. At one point, he developed Scaly Leg Mites and I separated him from the rest of the flock, and by the time he was cured and put back, a new rooster had taken over. Tommy didn’t like to fight, and let that other rooster beat him up badly. So, I had no other choice than to move him in with Wendy. Instantly, they clicked. Wendy had lost her ‘baby’ an adopted disabled chick named Owlet to her disability months prior, and was still downcast. But with Tommy, she perked up. They shared food, slept together, drank together. If Wendy wanted to sleep outside, he kept her warm. If she was hungry, he would find food. But after almost a year, I found Wendy cold in her favourite sleeping place. She’d died. And I still don’t know how or why. Tommy was distraught. He paced the coop constantly, searching for her for days. He lost weight, he was scruffy. I didn’t hear him crow at all. A month later, and he passed away too, in almost the same place. I believe they are together now, but it still hurts my heart to remember them. Rest In Peace, you two. I’m happy you’re together again.

Oh my god, these two were in love, just as the rooster n hen in this vid!! :) I think it's so sweet when animals love one another so much, but it sucks when one of em passes and the other one doesn't know what happened. I think you did wonderful in caring for these babies though and you gave these two probable soulmates a chance to meet in their lifetime. Man, The love between these chickens is SO Strong, it would give Romeo & Juliet a run for their money.

I have raised chickens my entire life and i tame them and fully understand them, and when i see the way shrimp looks at basil, he really, really cares about her. That is the most loving look ive ever seen on a rooster. They are like an old couple, its really sweet to see something like this.

Yes! I had a lil' chicken once. At first we were gonna name her gertrude after my grandma but then after she grew enough to have feathers we noticed she had a limp leg. We named her Gimpy and I would help her around to get food and water. When she was lagging behind the group I would come and sit down. It was my way of asking "Do you wanna rest with me?" sometimes she would come and rest by my lap or I would pick her up and put her into my lap. She was a really sweat chicken and I loved her a lot. But one day there was a huge storm and Gimpy couldnt get up the ramp to get into her hen house. She was so cold. I didnt notice. And she died. Poor ittle Gimpy died cold, and alone because I wasn't careful enough to make sure she could make it up the ramp.

I've been keeping chickens for many years and every one of my birds has had an individual "chickenality", so to speak. They are very intelligent and can be just as diverse as humans. They are very capable of showing empathy for a sick or injured member of the flock, some more than others. I think that I would rather be around my birds more than most people!

That's adorable. I love watching a rooster call over his girl because he's found her a special treat. They will dance for their ladies too. It sounds like these two just had the perfect temperaments for each other, even if they didn't fit in with the rest of the flock.

Animals all have emotions. You just never see them express it like us, they do it their way.

It's not that we think they have no emotions, it's just that they have chicken emotions, and we -- as a human animal -- will never be able to truly know what those emotions are because we are not chickens. These chickens are not free, they are not growing up and living their lives as their wild ancestors did, and whatever behaviors they exhibit are potentially a result of their altered environment. Who is to say this rooster would react in this same way completely free of any human intervention? What we view as "love" could also translate into "desperation" or "loneliness" or any other myriad of emotions that might arise in a confused animal living apart from its kind, surrounded by humans, in an unnatural human-built environment. And just because a rooster might feel whatever emotions it is feeling, does not mean it will react in the same way that a human might if we experienced those same emotions, because chickens do not have a human sense of morality or law. That's what we mean when we say that.

Several penguin species engage in necrophilia and pedophilia. Walruses will also try to mate with unattended babies, often inadvertantly smothering them to death with their bulk. So... Yeah, animals do things that humans would find depraved, but they're animals. There is no walrus court of law that will convict a walrus for raping and murdering a baby walrus.

A spider society, where mother spiders eat their own young, might look at human childrearing as being immoral, whereas we would think it immoral to eat your own babies. After raising chickens (with very similar genetics to these two awesome birds) I can confirm and see how these behaviors can manifest. Birds (especially chickens) can make wonderful pets due to their natural instinct to bond with others. This video is a great representation of how awe-inspiring this can be! If I’m not mistaken, birds are the only species outside of mammals which actually feel legitimate emotions such as love. There are certain components missing from fish and reptilian brains which prevent them from feeling complex emotions (rather regarding situations as positive or negative rather than actual anger, love, fear, etc). But birds do have these components and thus can feel genuine love for others. (Despite the cliche of chickens being incredibly dumb).

People should start realising that animals have bigger souls than most people do.. this story is so lovely and emotional 🥺🥺❤️❤️

One of the first "pets" I had when I was growing up on the farm was a Rhode Island Red rooster. He let me pick him up and carry him everywhere, he never showed an ounce of aggression towards me, and was my sidekick for his entire life. Love and companionship come in many different forms. Shrimp and Basil are a couple that the universe meant to have. With luck, they'll enjoy their golden years together. I'm so glad each of them found a home on the Sanctuary, where kindness and patience are so abundant.

Awwwww the love story I didn't know I needed!! This is like my husband and myself, I'm disabled and have a few other health issues going on, my husband is my care giver and I'd be lost without him. I don't know anything about chickens but even I can see these feathered friends have found companionship, happiness and security together. If they weren't happy in each other's company they would make it known especially because Basil isn't a fan other birds.

Considering the fact that most men leave their partners once they're sick (like a 1 week stay in a hospital bc of a broken leg i.e.) is just all around shocking and super suuuuper common. "Meeting your person" mostly happens on very rare occasions and alot may never meet "their person".

It really confuses me sometimes how a lot of people don’t see that. For example, I know someone who LOVES (for lack of better words) animals, especially birds. She’s raised baby cockatiels from egg to adulthood. She’s spent whole days off work solely devoted to keeping these chicks alive, but then at the same time would pay for the maceration of other chicks.. for an egg McMuffin. She’s rescued a bird, but then she pays for other birds to be killed.. for a pack of chicken nuggets. Like is that… is that not weird? I’m happy she’s rescuing animals, but at the same time like… huh? Call me crazy, but I don’t think whether or not someone deserves to live should be dictated by how colourful their feathers are y’know? 🐓=🦜

Honestly I agree. I've been raising chickens, and the emotions they have toward each other is just remarkable.

I’ve owned chickens for almost a year now (will be a year on Valentines Day) and I’ve had them since they were chicks. I’ve never had a pet before so the connection I had with them was magical. A few months ago our rooster got beat up pretty bad and stopped mating, crowing, and was always by himself. It was like he was ashamed of himself and thought since he got beat up he couldn’t protect the other chickens. It was so sad because this can happen to humans too😥. Anyway he finally picked himself up and found his worth a few weeks ago and is now crowing, mating, and being around the chickens again. And I also hatched a chick in an incubator about 3-4 months ago and we just introduced him/her (we don’t know yet they’re still too little) to the flock a few days ago and the chick stays with him all the time and he doesn’t hurt him! It’s so cute and rare for a rooster to bond with the chick. (It’s also ironic because none of the chickens wants anything to do with the chick lol)

I had a pair quite similar to this, they were together 24 x 7, if she couldn't see him in sight she would start singing and later screaming if she still couldn't find and on hearing her voice he would always crow and rush to find her. He passed away on Christmas day one year ago and we showed her how we buried him and after that she would go everyday and stand next to his grave the entire day which she continued doing for a month. Another strange thing was she would sing very loudly like always to call for him but on not getting any response from his side she started crowing herself after singing, at first I was confused as to which is this new young rooster responding to her but later I found out it was my hen all along! We have 2 other roosters but even now she doesn't let either of them mate, she gets agressive with them if they try to go near her even though with her guy she used to quite literally go and crouch in front of him to allow him to mate. It was my first time seeing such a deep relationship between chickens.

I’ve never seen chickens act this way and I own chickens. This is incredible and as someone who is around many animals they have a semblance of emotion that can be nurtured and grown if not already grown. Edit: I should make it clear that I don’t work on a farm. I keep chickens as pets. I only just now remembered that I had one chicken that acted more like a dog. It didn’t play fetch but it was a rooster that like people and loved being to go to bed.

Why was that important? It was important because a broken bone would have been a death sentence but someone stayed to help that person and give them food u til it healed. In addition, you don't need to be mindful to have emotional connections and to feel things. People tend to devalue instinctual emotions versus the more voluntary ones, which is bizarre. The instinctual ones are generally the stronger of the two types, and the ones we see overhyped in media and society all around (as an example, "motherly love" or "romantic love", though both of these are typicallg more based in biology than psychological for humans). You don't need a specific IQ to experience a rich emotional life. Humans had emotions (it'd be extremely weird and difficult to justify scientifically if they didn't) before we became advanced enough to wear clothes or build a fire. Almost anything with the capacity to connect (whether pyschologically, biologically, physiologically, etc.) outside of itself has the capability to feel emotion, as a general rule of thumb.

She knew her name, some tricks, was very friendly, loving and gentle companion. Also, getting along pretty well with my dog. That's very strange because we also have a Hen here where I live in my apartment building. Granted, there are chickens even in the cities in Miami. A lot of people have little farms they shouldn't in Urban areas. I think someone must have dumped her here. But we all feed her and leave her water

A lot of people don't understand that chickens have protective behaviors because of their bonds. It could be romance, their family, or even just buddies from growing up and they show actual affection. We've had chickens for years and there is a definite show of some kind of love and variety of personalities. You just have to see it in person to realize. Love these two cuties btw

This is such a touching story. It's hard to imagine why some people see animals as lesser beings, when clearly they have a rich emotional life. I had a chicken friend who used to come right into my open door and jump on the counter. After she had babies, the other chickens picked on her, and she ran away. I hope she found peace out there in the world. I miss that girl.❤

This is a beautiful story, thanks for sharing it! I used to have hens as pets, that I loved so dearly, and each had a unique personality. I found them to be intelligent in the way other animals aren't. They seem to have good memories and understand spatial things, that say for example, my cats, may not have. Never had a rooster, as I was concerned they may be too aggressive. But you've shown how gentle and loving roosters can be, that's truly educational for the rest of us. @@jjradV No, I don't eat any meat, my conscience won't let me. I've been a vegetarian for over 30 years now. I try not to judge others who eat meat, as everyone's conscience is designed specifically for them. There are so many plant protein choices now to replace animal meat that it's easy for someone to stop eating animals. But even 30 years ago, for me it was a no-brainer, it was the right thing for me to do, as it had bothered me since I was a child to eat animals. I have a great love and appreciation for the animal world, and do not see humans as so superior. The animals we have as pets seem to understand unconditional love better than people, we can learn from them. All the species in this world make it a more beautiful place, and I thank God for them! I try to live and let live as best I can.

I wonder how many judges would let people go for rape, torture, incest or murder because the person was just following their conscience. There are too many people that don't seem to have a conscience, that is why we need Animal rights, to protect Animals from people, that think they can abuse, torture and kill Animals as they see fit. Have you ever considered becoming vegan ? The egg and dairy industries are extremely cruel. Dairy cows are forcibly bred every year so they will produce milk. The Male dairy calves are killed shortly after birth or kept confined either by being chained up or kept in a small enclosure so they can't move around in order to keep their muscles soft so they can be sold as veal. The babies are not allowed to have their mothers milk. Cows are very maternal animals and cry and grieve for weeks after their babies have been taken from them. Newly hatched Male chicks are ground up alive, gassed, suffocated or drowned because they don't lay eggs. The laying hens are kept in brutal conditions, deprived of everything that is natural to them. There are so many people that have no idea of the suffering they are causing and paying for. As you said , it has never been easier to become vegan.

Their consciences are either dulled or they've compartmentalize things in their minds to allow themselves to do cruel things. If people were truly following their consciences, they would be compassionate and kind to all of life, so far as they can see at that moment in time. But the fact is, we're all very imperfect and at different places in the maturity of our souls, so we can't live other people's lives for them. Our responsibility is to share what light or truth we've been given with others, and leave it with them to open themselves to it and make better choices, trusting God is working on their consciences (= His Divine Spark in them) and lives. There is so much cruelty and abuse going on in this world, and it's beyond any one person's ability to stop it. We can only do what we can in our sphere of influence. I'm a praying person, so believe there is great power in that as well. There is so much in this world that we don't understand, but we do the best we can with what we do understand. In answer to your question, yes I have considered going vegan, but at this point I still have milk products. I'm not a big fan of eggs, but do have them occasionally. Both are in many foods we eat, so it's hard to avoid them completely. Also, my focus has been that the animals are not killed to get the milk or eggs, and the eggs we eat are unfertilized. Maybe at some point, I will cease to eat milk and eggs. But I cannot dwell on all the horrors that are happening in our world, as they are unimaginable to me, and believe it is not healthy to dwell on them anyway, since we are limited in what we can prevent. I will continue to listen to my own conscience (as it was designed for me), and choose to focus on positive and good alternatives or scenarios that are happening, and believe that more good is possible! This works best for me to function this way. I appreciate your communication with me, though. 😇

All foods that are available in the non dairy section. Why would anyone deliberately continue harming and killing someone when they have a choice not too. The cow is not your mother,the milk is not your milk,it is designed to grow a baby cow. Dairy cows have been manipulated by humans to produce huge amounts of milk,they are literally milking machines. Cows are even milked while they are pregnant,the milk is full of hormones that are very unhealthy for the human body. I wonder if God would approve of stealing a cows breast milk and depriving her babies that it was designed to feed. I wonder if God would approve of forcibly impregnating ( they are put into ,what the dairy industry calls a rape rack) cows every year until their bodies are exhausted from having babies and being continually milked. They are then sent to slaughter, usually between the ages of 5 to 7 years old. Cows naturally will live into their 20's.. I wonder if God would approve of killing new born Male dairy calves because they don't produce milk ? When people are making choices that harm other sentient beings out of ignorance that can be forgiven,but when people continue to cause suffering and death because they don't want to change their diet or what they consume that is quite another issue. To be aware of the violence and death they are causing and paying for is inhumane and unexceptable. Once you know these things you can't un-know it.

I have chickens. I absolutely love my birds. I have taken sick birds to the vet. One little bantam hen couldn’t walk for some reason shortly after she hatched. I made little leg splints for her and made a donut out of a towel. Kept her in my house for about 2 months until her legs got strong enough for her to be able to get around and she did!! She just had to mature a little bit for her legs to get stronger. Don’t worry about what others say or think. It’s your conscience that needs to be clear at night when you lay down to sleep and that’s what matters….that you do the best you can to help them and give them a good life. I feel like that is my responsibility for the animals in my care regardless of the species. Thank you for understanding Shrimp and Basil’s needs and being caring enough to cater to that. I wish everyone cared that much. ❤

I have been raising chickens for over 30 years and my first thought when I saw this video is "ev they take them inside" because chickens are not like cats or dogs, they do not have any bathroom culture, they do it wherever whenever they need to. And cocks always protect hens and let them have first pick on the food, but if they only allow him to have access to one hen of course he is going to be overprotective, but a normal cock needs a harem of 6 or 8 hens. Because chickens do not pair bond either. Its really disgusting that someone would treat chickens like this

@@rphb5870 I think it's a bit harsh to imply they're abusing or mistreating their chickens. I think chickens act differently depending on how much human interaction they have - these two are obviously pretty domesticated. Personally, my rooster has a favourite hen by a mile. He ignores the other 3 hens. He still protects them all and lets them have first pick of food but he is especially caring for one hen in particular. As for taking them inside, it's pretty commonplace these days. Because of avian influenza, my chickens HAVE to be kept inside and are not allowed outside, not even in the garden because we have a massive outbreak in my local area. As such, I can't let my chooks spend all their time sat in their indoor coops - they're used to being outside and roaming around. Because of that, I let them roam indoors. Otherwise they'd never get out and I think it would be more disgusting to deprive them of that freedom. They clearly go outside as well as being indoors so I see no issue. Cleaning up chicken poo takes five seconds, plus we see them on puppy pads which they will likely just dispose of after the chickens have done their business. It has been noted that chickens will pair bond. They won't mate for life, no, but many DO pair bond, especially hens with one another. That's why they often tell you to get an even number of hens. I actually think it's pretty nasty to accuse someone of mistreating their animals from a 3 minute clip. In all fairness, the rooster Shrimp was taken out of the flock because of violence. What else were they meant to do? Let the other roosters kill him? You know as well as I do that as soon as a bird sees red, they just keep pecking. They obviously didn't want him to be all alone and that's why he was introduced to Basil and vice versa. Considering she is disabled and has mobility issues, what were they meant to do with her? Reintroduce her to a flock where they will likely target her? This seems like a best case scenario for both chickens. As far as I see it, both chickens are likely to be killed by the flock if they aren't accepted which is how it seems to be. I'd rather they be indoors being stroked, having a snuggle together, running around etc than be dead. Seriously, why are you complaining saying that two clearly cared for animals are being abused when you COULD be spending that time complaining about the actual animal abuse they were saved from? Without battery farming, Basil would've never lost her leg in the first place and without Shrimp being abandoned, he may have been more capable of sticking up for himself. How the hell can you say you've raised chickens for 30 years but then seemingly put down the idea that they're sentient beings? It is something that the World Animal Protection has explicitly stated themselves.

@@theinvertebratequeen FIrst of all, I never said they mistreated them, I said that I was disgusted over how they treated them, which may still be a little too strong, its just I really do not like excrements and because they pop all the time, I have always kept my chicken at arms length. I have chickens for the eggs and the meat, and if a hen is disabled it is an obvious candidate for the stow, as is most cocks. I only keep a few of the most pretty for breeding. Regarding avian influenza, the best strategy is actually exposure, not isolation. Expose the chickens for the disease, let these who die die, and breed these who survive. The result is a resistant stock of chickens.

And honestly even if she was just “putting human emotions” on these chickens why does it even matter? As long as it isn’t hurting the animals or anyone though I COMPLETELY agree that all animals have separate personalities I have 2 pet snakes and though a lot of people just find them cold and evil, they can be very sweet and like with every other living thing if you give them respect then they will respect you back :) (except for a holes lol)

They understand and feel, that's why even a CROCKADILE will appreciate and respect you if you saved them like this man did. kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZWFs1pJrc826f7g.html We just don't often have situations happen that make such animals trust us, but when they happen, they think and feel just like humans, and we know when someone saves us they're not likely to be a threat.

I have chickens and roosters. I love them! My big softie rooster, JB will come up and wait patiently for food. He’s very protective of the more docile/small hens. Chickens are AMAZING and they can truly be sweet and connected.

Well said. People can't comprehend how caretakers assign human emotions to animals until they witness it. I adopted 2 families of raccoons. My wife and neighbors were terrified of them. No matter how much I tried to explain that they weren't savage, vicious animals, they wouldn't believe it. My wife reluctantly joined me during a nightly feeding. The first time one of the little ones looked up at her with their huge eyes and gently took a food morsel from her hands, she was so emotional that she cried. From that moment on, she's been a surrogate raccoon mom. Don't take it the wrong way. I'm not saying that all animals are gentle. Roosters, hens, and raccoons can be aggressive. My point is that caregivers get to know and understand the animal. Just like humans, these little critters have personalities. They can be mean, but they are also curious, affectionate, stubborn, protective, and intelligent.

Animals are emotionally intelligent in their own ways, yes, but please do not feed or encourage wild animals to interact with people. You endanger both them and the people in your neighborhood by doing so. It is illegal to keep wild animals as pets in any manner; you cannot care for them or get them vaccinated unless you are a licensed rehabilitator, and unfortunately, raccoons are common carriers or the rabies virus. Do not encourage common contact and gatherings of many. It is highly irresponsible and dangerous not only to people but to them as well.
