Roonlabs Nucleus+ Roon server

Ғылым және технология

Now Roon has introduced their own server hardware, prices appear to be rather steep: € 1,500 for the Nucleus and € 2,500 for the Nucleus+. That might lead to high expectations and web trolls making nasty remarks. So let’s investigate.

    Hans, I am considering getting the Roon Nucleus primarily for the ease of setup as you point out in your video. I am using a Cambridge CXNv2, would I get better sound quality using the usb input on the CXN, vs streaming to it?

    Provided your network is working fine, it is likely to produce the better sound over USB from the Nucleus.

    Hi Hans, thanks for the precious information you have been sharing since forever, one of the very insightful channels when it comes to Audio. I have 2 questions regarding Roon (apologies in advance for the long comment): Q1 : a part from the user experience that you described as second to none,(i haven't used roon yet) in addition to the possibility of transcoding on the go to match the endpoint capabilities, +the cataloguing and tagging super-capabilities of roon, and since the audio reproduction will still depend on the endpoints DAC and capabilities, are there any other advantages to use roon ? (i play music for example using Denon AVR while files are stored on a nas, and i control it from the Android bubble upnp app, not the best aesthetically), i also use Plex which isn't that sleek in terms of visuals, but the main mission (playing music) is fully fulfilled. Q2 : knowing the price point of roon, what other alternatives (free/cheaper) that you might recommend for an Audio media center ? (jriver, Amarra, ?) Thanks in Advance

    Let me start by saying nothing equals Roon. It's not cheap but it is by far the best, especially since you can put the computer running the server away from the stereo without loosing any audio quality. RAAT is really unbeaten. Your AVR uses the archaic DLNA protocol and I would suggest using a network audio interface connected to one of the digital input on the AVR. MY favourites? Allo USBridge, SOtM sMS-200/Sonore MicroRendu or SOtM sMS200 Ultra, depending your budget (watch kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZIyGy5uupLGonJc.html). If you are willing to a Mac near your stereo, I would prefer Audirvana 3+ kzread.info/dash/bejne/a3l_pJKHeJPXdKQ.html. And don't forget: a proper cd-player back in the day costed more than Roon + a mid class networked audio interface.....

    MANY thanks for this review--it's VERY helpful. I bit the bullet and installed Roon my writing laptop. But it clearly needs to be on 24/7 and really, it's a RAM pig. So, I think I'm going to bite the bullet and run a headless mac mini. I don't have the "hands" to install additional hardware (I have rheumatoid arthritis). So, the Nucleus is a non-starter. Interesting ,yes. Feasible nope. Neither are other options that request that I dig around inside computer guts. Oh well....

    Hans, I just purchased the Roon Nucleus, and I am using Tidal as my music source. I have a Cambridge CXNv2, however the CXNv2 does not support MQA. While the Nucleus does the first unfold, the CXNv2 does nothing more with MQA. I watched your videos on the Mytek Dac + and the Mytek Brooklyn Bridge. If I feed the Nucleus into the Dac + will it give me all of the MQA unfolds from Tidal?

    Good morning Hans, I have some questions to ask. I plan to purchase DAC like Mola-mola Tambaqui as my first choice, Lumin U1, but then I am confused with the Storage to purchase, firstly I like with the Lumin L1, but when I see your utube about Roon Nucleus, I am more interested with Nucleus! So the setting will be #1 Nucleus-Lumin U1-Tambaqui or #2 Nucleus-Tambaqui only? or #3 Lumin L1-Lumin U1-Tambaqui? Please advice and thank you (Surjo)

    Hans, I have question about using an Sbooster MKII with the Roon Nucleus. I have the Mytek Brooklyn Dac+ and I am using an Sbooster MKII LPS with it. I have my Nucleus connected to my Mytek via a high grade USB cable. Currently my Nucleus is powered by the supplied switch mode power supply. If I were to add an Sbooster MKII to the Nucleus do you think I would see a noticeable improvement in performance the Nucleus?

  • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel

    @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel

    I can't judge whether you will notice an improvement. That depends on many factors like your gear, your acoustics and your ears. And if you notice the difference, I can't judge whether that is worth the money to you. Far better improvements can be made using a network bridge like the SOtM sMS-200 or the Sonore MicroRendu, even if you use it with a simple audiophile PSU like the iFi iPower.

    It would be nice if Roon would support more music services. Tidal is integrated into Roon, but what about Deezer or Qobuz? Would make Roon more acceptable since I have some bad experiences with monopolistic and closed environments. And on topic, of course it is way too expensive as I understand you still need an additional subscription for the software. It makes the Elac Discovery a bargain. Statement I found somewhere on the web: “ Roon will release their custom OS free of charge and detail the hardware purchases required do so.” Very nice and good move!

    Roonlabs told me they'd love to. But they need streaming services to give them access to more metadata than they are willing to keep the Roon experience. Qobus, when asked, stated that they want to keep control and will only allow the user to use the Qobus app for playing music. The Roon software has always been free but to use it you do need a subscription to the Roon services.

    In your opinion - does a Roon Nucleus connected to the DAC via USB output still require use of USB line conditioning products you have recommended in the past (like sMS 200 Ultra) or does the silent construction of the Nucleus eliminate the jitter and noise issues? thank you for your advice

    Will a linear power supply to the NUC/Nucleus make a difference?

  • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel

    @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel

    5 жыл бұрын

    That depends on the situation. If the NUC is at distance, I don't expect to hear a difference. In my case the NUC is two floors up and I really don't hear any difference. But if your NUC is close to the stereo it might make a difference, especially if the DAC is connected directly to the NUC. Using a network bridge (also named networked audio adaptor or networked audio interface) is a better solution.

    thanks Hans. The next question is this: most people have the following setup: router>ethernet>switch nuc/nucleus>ethernet>switch switch>ethernet>roon endpoint and everyone agrees that a LPS to the switch makes a difference. why wouldnt it make a difference to a nuc/nucleus even if it is far away? if it brings electrical noise to the switch, the electrical noise will eventually end up to the endpoint/dac. Right?

  • @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel

    @TheHansBeekhuyzenChannel

    I don't agree that a LPS always sounds better on a switch. My AQVox SE sound better with the SMPS that came with it. And noise, especially HF noise as generated by SMPS, has little energy and will lose its power over longer cables.

    It's a shame that one has to almost have a degree in engineering to put together a hi-fi system these days. Either that, or have the money available to have someone else do it for you. Give me Roon usability, MQA decoding, Dirac Live functionality, and streamer/server capabilty (all forms of streaming protocols), in a simple to assemble package, and I'd be happy. Oh.....and at a reasonable price. I feel as though there is no single vendor who is doing it all. The industry is like the wild west........and I don't have a gun. :P

    There will probably be no difference in sound quality between the two. If you do want to connect your DAC directly to the server, choose an audiophile type like the Innuos Zen range. They start under € 1000 and I did a review on a slightly more upmarket version here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gqZ_qNiAhLnTmbA.html (The Nucleus is just an Intel NUC with passive cooling, there are no audiophile measures on the NUC board). Do NOT focus on the CPU power, the more power the worse the electric noise that deteriorates the sound in your DAC.

  • @Fred-ql3gq

    I have seen a lot of information and videos about Roon, but I am finding a hard time finding information that tells me why this is better than just using Bluesound and its app. I am sure it is better, otherwise why would anyone pay 500 for software, but a simple video just showing how it works and compares to alternatives would be helpful. If it already exists, I haven't been able to find it.
