Unfortunately he was a victim of his own versatility and selflessness. He often gets overlooked because he didn't play consistently as a forward to be called the greatest forward/goal scorer ever or play consistently as a midfielder to be called the greatest too. Man just wanted to help the team in any way he could and he was so good at it.

Because the world needs to marvel over you. Not just an island. Not to say people abroad didn't rate him, but the elegance mind-blowing artistry is what grabs peoples eyes, and we don't make those and also the British idea of artistry is very different from the rest of the world. We have a habit of selling to the rest of the world trash and convincing them it's cool then selling to them at expensive prices in general. Rooney isn't trash, though, but you get the process and the dam buster, bull dog, thing. It's all culture.

True Rooney is one of those players who can do everything. Headers strong, shot strong and perfect aim. Passes magnificent, unselfish, always plays hard till the final whistle, great defender strong with ball, smashes volleys, bicycle kicks , long range shots. Penalty killer. HEART OF MAN U❤️ I will never let someone downgrade Rooney top 3 premier league players ever….

If I had to build a team with any players in it, Rooney would be my number 10. So versatile, worked hard, made goals, can play anywhere. Very very understated legend

I honestly don’t see any one else lobbing keepers from half way line or talking shit to a red and the INSTANTLY banging in a goal. Kane has played as the main man his whole career Rooney didn’t and I think if he stayed a true striker he would of had more desire to play longer as it gets Fucking tiring being one of the main reasons for a lot of our wins.

True United fans know that Rooney was the cape that allowed CR7 to fly. That partnership was utterly devastating. Both brought the best out of each other, but that's only because Rooney had so many other strings to his bow. Rooney could do what CR7 did, maybe not to that level but he could do it. CR7 couldn't dream of doing what Rooney did. Pressing came as naturally to Rooney as step overs did to CR7. Rooney was pressing long before these modern teams made it fashionable.

That's why he went on to have success at various positions, after Ronaldo left. It wasn't as simplistic as Ronaldo being better at that particular job. In fact, my initial comment states that Ronaldo was the better goalscorer. What I am trying to hammer into that empty cocoon of yours, is that Rooney resisted the urge to run into the box to allow for Ronaldo to make those runs. From 08 onwards, Ronaldo played as a wide-forward, which meant he no longer tracked back. That's where the likes of Tevez, Rooney, Park etc, all came in. They would track and press because Ronaldo was better suited to the role. If you remember that season like I do (you won't, because you were still waking up from wet dreams, I was well into my 20s by then). When I tell kids like you that Rooney made sacrifices, compromises, concessions or whatever word you want to use. I am stating a fact, not an opinion. Your opinion has less than the value of a zero sum, when compared to the facts that I'm stating. Rooney wasn't some lesser player that hung back because he had no choice but to let Ronaldo shine. Not even a Man U fan but I always liked Rooney. His work rate was amazing. 1 thing i always noticed with Ferguson tactics was he always found the right balance in his tactics. Spot on too. That’s why he needed players like Rooney, park, fletcher, hagreaves etc to do the general work. Just imagine Rooney also stood there like ronaldo . It would disrupt the balance of the team.

Yes, his output in front of goal is better than all the rest so it's logical that they sacrifice for him to get the best for the team. Henry and Ibrahimovic also did same for Messi. Wayne Rooney is more talented than Christiano Ronaldo. Wayne's problem is he never worked as hard as Christiano on getting better. Otherwise Wayne has more natural ability than Ronaldo.

Massively underrated footballer. Was regularly the best player in big games for Man U, in a team with Ronaldo etc. Takes some doing that. I remember him absolutely dominating games and being everywhere on the pitch.

I’d like to add that the kind of intensity with which Rooney played from age 16 to 32 is exactly why he fell off so rapidly after that age. Because his body and legs had taken so much punishment that they had no miles left in them. People talk about Cristiano playing well into his late 30s. Well he never played with as much intensity and ran the miles Rooney ran for 16 years of his career

Great comment. As a coach if I'm left with an option to pick only one of Rooney and Ronaldo in their primes, I'll take Rooney all day . there's nothing Ronaldo could do that he couldn't do and he did more.he could pass like a number 10, score goals, shoot from 35 yards and defend .

This reminded me of when Rooney ran back to the Half line after a dodgy corner kick/counter attack. He Single handedly catches the lead striker with a sliding tackle as last man back and then crosses the ball in for Acousta to finnish. This sums up Rooney. Excellent team player. Dogged resolve.

He sacrifices nothing one work harder and more determined Rooney on the other hand has already hit his all time peak nothing else to do

Do you understand what underrated mean? For all his playing career, Rooney was never underrated even during his time at Everton as a teen he was hailed as the savior of England. Media expected so much from him that he delivered. Delivered to the point that he was an overrated player on FIFA games. Rooney was an exceptional player during him time but he was neither the greatest or the worst. He was just another player who was good enough to play for Man Utd. Another Beckham if you might say, a player favored by the media but not that much to show on the pitch due to limitations

Rooney was a beast. Not a Utd fan or a fan of Rooney whilst he was still playing but I can now reflect objectively and see what an incredible player he was. He had everything.

Wayne Rooney was ridiculously good with the ball. One of the most complete players of all time. He could have achieved a lot more but his team did instead! One of the few the term world class truly applies. He should have been leading the line for England with Gerrad, Lampard and Scholes behind him. Somehow it never worked out that way.

It's heartbreaking to see them not on good terms anymore despite their achievements and history together.

Of course he's been incredible and his work ethic and dedication is inspiring but he has to be in a system that is made for him.
