I love Roon. I love that it’s more interactive than just a list of songs. I love that I can have multiple set ups and one library. Songs play almost instantaneously instead of a 2 second delay. Rare drop outs. Works with so many streaming devices. I have two headphone set ups, Sonos, and a hi-fi set up. I can stream to different spots or all together (although some streamers can’t mix with other types like Sonos). It’s truly awesome to just have something combines my library together with Tidal and Qobuz and it just works seamlessly.

roon fascinates me because of the amazing UI and integration with streaming 1. it costs a shit ton of money (120 or so for a year, 700 for a lifetime) 2. i dont need multiple zones... i only use my laptop and my phone (i dunno if my phone would even count as an endpoint for roon)... with no streamers or anything the idea of having spending 120 for roon seems like a stretch

I question the value myself. I use a file share program called soulseek, and I can download anything I want for free and have for 20 years. I donate several times a year to help it stay afloat. I really dont grasp how Roon would be that big of an improvement on my listening considering I have a few bluetooth headphone DACs and media players etc. For example, I have a bluetooth headphone DAC amp combo by Fiio, and me and the wife both have Quad DAC chips in our phones. All of those devices combined cost less than Roon yearly subscription.I am confident it would be great to have and geek out over all the nifty features, but I dont think it solves any problem I have well enough to justify the pricing.

The RPi is ,unfortunately, not able to run the Roon CORE server software (current ones at the time of this review, anyway). It also does not run great on current NAS hardware. Many people, including myself, use an Intel NUC with at least an i3 grade CPU, a spare laptop, or a desktop. The role of the RPi is to be an "end point" for devices that are not Roon Ready. It only has to run the end point RAAT software (i use ropieee) which is much less demanding.

@ 4:09 "Roon will software decode Tidal MQA, for the first unfold" As I understand MQA, the above means that time smearing will be corrected, but only for the source gear (the studio's gear). To have MQA correct time smearing on your end (for your own gear), you need a MQA certified DAC that does MQA core decoding. I do not know if time smearing is synonymous with jitter. But jitter is bad, and nearly all transports have it (such as playing from a computer). You have to spend considerable $$ to buy a purpose built music player (transport) that focuses on eliminating jitter. I heard one by Innous in a stereo store, and it was almost a religious experience. The music stopped sounding like it was coming from a stereo, and, instead, sounded like real "in the room with you" singers and their instruments. Once you hear the jitter cleaned up, it is hard to listen to anything else. I never was not able to understand jitter, because I never heard music without jitter. Every car stereo, and all but very costly CD players, all have jitter. So I am glad that I now recognize jitter. I am also sad that I can now recognize jitter, because now I hear it, and miss the glorious jitter-free sound in the stereo store. Sadly, neither Roon nor any other music software can eliminate the jitter that is inherent to mass produced computers. Excellent video!

@Dude Man MQA is a scam? Please back that statement up. "It is not needed..." Other than shelter, food/water, and oxygen, nothing is needed. Music is not needed. Stereos are not needed. "...there is no reason to compress anything with technology today" Data over the internet is routinely compressed, depending on the client/server relationship. Backups are routinely compressed. MQA is able to stream 192 kHz files at the same bandwidth that 44.1 kHz uses, due to using compression. There are endless compression operations that get used, because they save bandwidth for companies that use huge pools of data that they stream. Please do not make up nonsense and post it as if it is factual. You do a disservice to the public. Cheers!

So Roon has no content, it's basically a database that pulls all the various digital music files you have plus any streaming service you subscribe to into its interface. The price seems very steep. Paying 700 dollars for a "lifetime" subscription... tech develops at such an exponential rate that Roon could easily become obsolete in a few years...

Do we really need to pay $700 for an audio Wikipedia, if I want to read and know more about the music I use Google. As for MQA, why do I need to pay to decode a lossy proprietary codec when I can use FLAC, DSD, DFF files which are lossless and better quality. WE don't need to use lossy compression anymore, all we want is to hear the music exactly as it was intended and engineered to be heard by the artist. Would you pay to go to a museum to see a compressed version of a Picasso masterpiece.

Good points. I admit that Roon Radio sounds appealing, and the metadata presentation seems attractive, but...all those cool Raspberry Pi devices also work with Logitech Media Server, which is free and constantly updated by its own community, can be controlled by a < $10 smartphone app, and can now also integrate Tidal and Qobuz with your own music collection. Plus, since it doesn’t require a connection to Roon Labs' servers in order to do all that metadata and "curating," you won’t be SOL on your $700 app should the company ever shut down.

  • @tedmingolla2847

My other concern is with the Roon metadata which resides on their servers. There is no way to merge or edit metadata from other sources/ services. ie: Tidal, Quobuz, etc. If you decide to cancel your subscription you loose everything. I don't know about you, but I hate getting locked in to a service and having no control over my data. Also, if you don't maintain connectivity to their servers, you are dead in the water.

Everything is great about Roon but its pricing model. I don't like to pay software by month and $700 is a ripoff.

$700 is hard to swallow up front. I got in when it was $500. Its all relative though. If you're happy with your current streaming options than its probably not worth it. If you're looking for the next step up and to have the best streaming experience available, you give it more thought. Thanks for watching!

@@hifihometheater yes, $500 was a better price... but $700 is really hard to swallow because that $200 price increase was not based on any improvement or technological reason... it was just a marketing trick to push people to pay the annual subscription. That's not ok in my book. Amazing product, bad attitude.

I agree that $700 is a bitter pill to swallow. But, I’d rather pay that $700, and not have to worry about how I’d integrate together any new devices or songs I add to my collection moving forward. So, in a nutshell, it’s expensive, but it’s not as expensive as the time I’d waste trying to manage all my different hardware/music library on my own. And you are right about the price increase, which the team at Roon came out to explicitly say that it was so. They literally said that they DO NOT WANT any lifetime subs because they aren’t good for the longevity of the business, and I can see why. So I do agree that you are bitter about it, and I’m not exactly pleased with the increase. I still none the less bought the lifetime at 700. I’m fortunate to be in a position in which my income allows me to value the time I would have spent as above that of $700. And if you also recognise the benefits of the time saved using roon, you’d see why that even at 700 it’s a good investment for your hobby. That said, what’s 700 when your system probably costs more than 50 times that anyway lol.

@@87togabito A much smarter pricing model would be $1/mo per endpoint. It isn't as though Roon's overhead changes as the subscription volume increases, only support costs. They do not provide the media or data in the pipe, they only aggregate and facilitate. This is why their pricing model just baffles me, and frankly it keeps me far away. If they lowered the price to a per-seat basis like that I can imagine their subscription base exploding. But given the optics of the price-hike we witnessed as mentioned above, coupled with the fact that there *is* an outlay of time, hardware/$$ and energy for new subscribers/adopters, doing all of that for a subscription based service that may not be around down the road is just as risky as any other option. If the interest is in time savings only then something like Bluesound makes more sense. But that's more money outlay with similar risks. I dunno. I'm not onboard with all of this yet and still largely view streaming as convenience and novelty from a casual perspective and my investing of time and money reflects it. It's still casual for me. Real listening is with physical media that I own, just as I own the equipment that allows me to play it.

Hans Beekhuyzen, the man that thinks Ethernet switches make audio better.😂 has a stack of analyzers, that he never turns on. Better take a trip to audio science review, they sort the facts from fiction.

MAQ is bust because it's a fraud lie.😂😂😂. I would rather spend £120 a year on something else. Roon has never made sense to me. It feels like you are paying for nothing.
