    @@wangruochuan That's part of the point of snow-drifting, though. You don't even need a lot of power to overcook it, so it's a place you can learn control even if you don't have a drift car or something capable of drifting in the dry yet. Of course new Mustangs are bigger and heavier than they seem, so on snow or wet you have to be that much more careful. But it's a way to learn about weight transfer and grip and traction and certain instincts before you even start shredding tires. Slow cars can even be more fun in the snow than otherwise, cause it's easier to find that place where you're starting to break traction without having to be all sound and fury and tiresmoke about it. Control first. If you have access to snow , use it. :)

    I don't think 100 hp is enough to drift well, I'd go for maybe 150-170. It's harder for a rookie to break the tires loose when the car lacks power, ofc, nothing over 170 but i think that's the sweet spot for a starter. It is for me at least.. And if you don't plan on using your car too much on the street a cheaper and beginner alternative to an lsd is to weld your diff(ofc, that only if you have a cheap car to beat it). 100 hp it's just a bit less imo

    Initial D is more about the Touge than Drift. Sure, drifting is used in Touge Racing but it's not the main goal. Drifting started on the Touge, but then branched off into its own thing, while Touge Racing, which Initial D is focused on, is more along the lines of PPIHC, Goodwood FOS, and events like Hill Climbs, and Downhill Races. Even then it's just Hill Climbs, and Sprint Time Attacks.

    IMO, Chrisfix did it the right way when he got into drifting. Just took a completely stock car out and see what'll happen and what he can do. He didn't just blindly do the upgrades either. He grew into the upgrades, which is why he's pretty good at it right now. It's like when I hear "Oh I need a sick build before I can go out on track/autox" because in the real world, you don't. I'm all for people wanting to upgrade their cars but please, don't just blindly jump into them.

    Even though I still consider myself a Rookie drifter. I’d say one important tip that I can give out to other Rookies is to think of you and the car as one. Understand your car inside and out, and always know where your front wheels are pointing. May sound Corny, but it definitely helped me with Manji drifting, Inertia drifting and holding the correct angle on the corners. You’re in control of the car. The car isn’t in control of you.

    Also, top tip, the lower the horsepower of car, the better you'll get as a driver. That's why AE86s have such a reputation, the low horsepower makes a lot of people underestimate it while the solid rear does a great job of putting down power for that horsepower level. As a result, AE86 drifters are forced to learn more delicate technique to keep it going and once you get there, it's an awesome sight to see.

    Im 18 and learning to drift. The local track hosts drift days once a month and it's the best and cheapest way to learn. I get my tyres part worn and for free and fit them myself to some cheap rims I get second hand. Im in a 105hp (at fly) 92 mx5 that's my daily and with an open diff. When i started i kept spinning out however now ive really got the hang of it and am complimented when tandeming with cars with more than twice the HP. Everyone starts somewhere. Also id you need to use the handbrake to drift then you are doing it wrong. Skinnier tyres help more than anything. I started on 165s going slow and worked my way up from there. Throttle control is extremely important, i only use the brakes to initiate into a high speed corner. Best tip is to let go of the steering wheel when you feel the back step out on you, dont fight the car. Like alex said its a dance not a battle

    As a drifting instructor this wasnt bad! Low power in theory is reliable. Maybe not motor wise but driveline wise it is pretty much 100% of the time. The only thing i dont agree with is the tire choice. I always say get the stickiest johnnies you can find up front ( i love the falken azenis 615k+) then in the rear there are a few tires out there that are great. Depending on where you are from it might be easier or harder to get certain tires. so federal 595 quality has dropped so bad in the passed year... its so disappointing. Kenda kaiser (kr20), hankook ventus v2 concept 2, ohtsu ( i think all) there are alot more. Those tires are great ( yes i just searched the entire fitment industry website)

    Seat time, seat time, seat time. An angle kit and LS swap are not how you learn to drift. Get the following: Safety items Coilovers Maybe a proper seat Welded diff Hydro Lots of wheels. It's worth spending good money on quality fronts.

    Using left foot braking in tandams is a must to control your angle and speed, and when leading try to hold the widest position, and when following take a little tighter lines aim for the front fender but realistically don't get closer than your comfortable get, a racing Sim rig won't be the same of course but you'll get flow for things alot more quickly without paying for the machianical problems and tires.

  • @artsohc
    @artsohc5 жыл бұрын

    I would add a mistake I see is assuming you need a 240sz or a Z or an RX7 or some other import to be a drifty boy. I'd recommend considering cars with V8s from the 90s and early 2000s like Edge Mustangs and Camaro SS's. Having the extra torque to help you when learning throttle control can be really helpful. To something Alex said, think about what it is your tires are actually doing while drifting. When autocrossing, you generally want the widest & stickiest tires you can fit on your car, but you don't really want that with drifting. You start weight transfer with the brake and then maintain your drift using throttle control...having a thinner tire in the 205-255 range (depending on your car) means you can break and maintain loss of traction easier with less power and less braking force. I think a great starter car would be a 99-04 Mustang GT. These can be had cheap, parts are cheap, and the V8 mod motor makes plenty of power. Add some coil-overs, some new wheels with more appropriate offset than the stock wheels, and add an offroad X pipe for the noise enjoyment and you are ready to go and try out drifting.

I took a BRZ and a Cayman out and there was too little cabin sound in the Caymen for me to get it right. The BRZ was great and easy to get to grips with. I could easily drift it when I had more sensory input than the Caymen.
