To everyone who has not been to top fuel drags, YOU GOTTA GO EXPERIENCE IT. Do not let anyone trick you into not protecting your hearing. It is painful and does permanent damage. Being there in the flesh will vibrate you to your core. It's a surreal feeling the first time it happens. Deafening is a good description because it does so permanently if you don't wear protection. Put a back massager on high. Then place it right between your eyes. Press down firmly. Then add 10 to 12000 hspwr and the smell of burning nitro methane burning your eyes and nose. Crazy to think that millions of us love this stuff. But we do. ❤

It's not only the sound, but everything with these nitro methane "cars" is just evil(in a good way ;) ) The sound is literally deafening, the exhaust makes your eyes sting, and when 2 top fuelers take off it's literally an earthquake, seismologists have measured that moment to be well over 2 on the Richter scale at NHRA events. I remember standing in the bay with the rest of the class when Scott jumped in and mashed the throttle to about 9000 RPM. The only other time I've heard anything so loud and so close was when I was in the Air Force sending off a Squadron of F-4 Phantom Jets under full afterburners. Pretty sure that Top Fuel Dragster goes through more fuel than the F-4 Phantoms! It was Epic, RIP Scott

There is a young lady who has a channel on KZread where she works on cars, its called, "Woman Driven." Two years ago she went to the spring NHRA meet in Phoenix, never having been at a drag race before. She made the mistake of getting too close to a TFD when it was warming up, and the tears were just pouring from her eyes. As she said, it was worse than cutting up a juicy onion. But she was awed by the whole experience. Pro Stock cars going 210 mph, there were blown fuel Harleys going 227 mph, TFDs and Funny Cars were going 330+ and she just couldn't comprehend the speeds, couldn't wrap her head around how fast they were. And loud. Then she skipped the following year (Covid related) but got invited the next year as a guest of the NHRA and had a followup video. And like all fans, she went around searching for souvenirs. One team gave her a used connecting rod and piston, which she was guarding and treasuring. Its a really good video. Search under "Woman Driven" in You Tube. AND BTW, her own cars, she has a late model Camaro Z28, a late model Shelby Mustang and a few other hipo cars that she works on, among others. She just took out the Coyote V8 engine from the Shelby, by herself, tore it down and rebuilt it, then reinstalled it. The car was stock, except she put a K&N air filter on it, which gave Ford a chance to void out the warranty. When she tore down the engine, there were piston problems in the #8 cylinder, not affected by the K&N filter, but Ford refused the claim. She ended up spending $20K to rebuild the engine herself. But I digress. Check out her vid about her at the drag strip.

That whack turns 2600rpm idling speed into 8000rpm in about 0.2 second. Hard to conceive how the rotating assemblies in these engines keep from flying apart under that kind of instant stress. Enjoy those whacks while you can - very few teams do it anymore other than Scott Palmer, who only races part time and who's currently recovering from a bad crash in his Studebaker.

There is nothing in the world like the immediate throttle response and pressure of a Fuel Car throttle blip. I remember when EVERY team would whack the throttle in the pits and do dry burnouts up at the line.. The sport is amazing but it has changed... This kid should be wearing ear plugs or covering his ears.... The level of sound is significant and damaging. It's not worth hurting your ears when all it takes is a pointer finger in each ear... It's awesome Scott Palmer still puts on a show unlike most of the other teams that do not care about what the fans want.. This sport would be nothing without the fans that go to support the events... Cool video.
