Thanks for taking the time to make a video with the steps shown in enough detail to be able to confidently build my own.

This is really great. I wished you had done this about two years ago so I could have avoided an expensive and potentially dangerous RTT that I ended up scrapping. Now I can see a better way to do it. Thanks!

Hey, I have a question! For videos like this would you rather see shorter videos (8-15 min.) or longer (25-45 min)? I don't personally mind long videos. I am just curious as to what you guys think! Any feedback is much appreciated!

Longer is good, but not when it’s showing repetitive things, eg shots showing screwing in just about every screw in the project. But I’m sure know that. Loving the series so far🤙

When we remodeled our house, I was always loosing my tape measure. I literally laughed out loud when you said "where is it?" I knew before the camera found it. I knew.

I love the candor in your videos. I got a real chuckle out of the "Where is it?" while looking for the tape measure, I always have two or three tape measures on a project because of this. Keep up the great work.

Great video you have taken all the guess work out of building one for me .Great trick rounding the corners gives it that professional look and the tip of the extra 3/4 inch to fasten the tent great idea be spending hours trying to think of that.Your videos are very informative and leave me wanting to see more .I'm building one in the spring and you got my imagination and creative mind thinking.Looking forward to more. Thanks for the video. looking forward to the next step. PS, The tape measure you are using would be as rare as rocking horse poo, here in Australia. At least ours has both inches and metric. If you go to a hardware store, the timber is sold in metric size, but go to a lumber yard, it's in imperial. Funny that.

The length is perfect for this step, you may need a bit longer for other steps but I recommend you stay under 30 min per video. Great job and thanks for the effort. Look forward to the others.

Just started following you Patrick and I’m well impressed! Very much looking forward to seeing the full build out and planning one myself having sold a self build teardrop this year. The episodes are great so far and the detail and content just about spot on... the length of the video is determined by the job to some extent as the base is one, the roof another and so on. Personally I have no problem with the length which could well be variable but aim for a maximum of 30mins for impact. Cheers ;-)

When glueing it’s better just squirt the glue on and clamp or screw instead of spreading the glue out thin. It has way less of a bond when spread this because the faces of the lumber never perfectly meet

Thank you for the information, it is proving very useful as I am building a lightweight trailer for towing behind a recumbent trike. After you have rounded the corners, is it advisable to replace the screws you removed?

I would have taken all the screws out after glue sets and fill holes with glued doweling.

Hey Mr. Remington, I am planning to build the original rectangular style you did, not the clamshell, but im learning from this base and top piece to do it. I am wondering if I should be doing to step up all the way around? as this clamshell you dont have the step up on the rear for the hinge. thank you!!! I cant wait to start building this winter, you are a huge confidence booster and inspiration.

Yes, you do the step-up all the way around. They are built exactly the same. I actually changed the design and added the step up on that fourth side in this build. I think I mention it in the struts video.

How thick is your plywood base?

I'm also currently building my own roof tent, and your going to laugh at my material.... for my base and roof I'm useing two clasping plastic tables with the foldable legs lol it was easy to mount it to my suv and to get the top working but now I dont know how I'm going to attach the tent fabric

Hey Patrick....freaking awesome bro....so I just started my build and got a few questions ....1...in place of glue with screws can I instead use gg heavy duty construction adhesive (still using boat central epoxy/resins like recommend)just talking about the connection of 1-4 to plywood ect....also is it possible to watertreat all wood prior to construction using OLYMPIC WATERGUARD STAIN and sealer? I am worried about adhesive grip after water treating so I figured I could use painters tape on all connectors so as not to change surface of wood where other substances will be used( epoxy resins/ect.....also where the hinge goes can I just use a single piece of lumber cut to size?thanks for all the help man amazing build best subscription on KZread keep up the great work bro

You can use construction adhesive. I can't speak to the Waterguard for a sealer. I'm not sure how well that will work. I sealed it with expoxy. I will be posting a video soon on how to fiberglass the surface so definitely be on the lookout for that. Not hard at all. For the hinged side you need to build it just like the other 4 sides. I I Know I said to keep it flat but changed that in a later video. The struts video I believe.

with these rip-off Overland prices... thats the way to GO!

I bought my tent but custome build the rack. (First oveand project) I call it the Ruckus Rack.

No fiberglass? Just wondering if that is needed?

Harley Cross heck yeah! Did you catch the small modification in the struts video? It's very minor. Also when you are making the top frame make sure it is square or at least matches your base very well. After the top frame is built and before putting on plywood, go ahead and figure out exactly where the hinge will go mark and predrill holes (if you are using piano hinge). These are just a couple things that have given me trouble.

I looked through the comments, and listened to the video a couple of times now. Why did you use 1x4 for the sides as opposed to ripping down 1/2" ply to save some weight? I realize it wouldn't be a lot, but I would think it would help some?

weight and cost! I would have had to use two layers 3/4 plywood to get the thickness I needed and that would be much heavier and more expensive than using pine board. If you are interested in building you should joint the facebook group! Search DIY rooftop tent community

I actually kind of waffle between a rooftop and a teardrop. I have occasions where one would be better than the other, and may end up doing both. I do love what you are doing!

I missed the bit about chopping 1/4” off the front pieces. Thought you mentioned just the sides. Should I take front off and redo, or will it be okay to take it off the 1x4” at the front?

Yeah I would do that then sand it flush. It might look funny if you left it.
