Ronseal Fence Paint (Charcoal Grey) and Paint Brush
This video follows me using Ronseal's, Once coat fence life, Charcoal grey fence paint and Ronseal Fence life 4" Paint brush.
The paint was 12L and cost £12, the brush was £8.50'ish, but is cheaper elsewhere.
If you have a new fence, untreated, unpainted, then I would say that this may work for the cost, it may not. Certainly for well established painted fences, I would not recommend this one. Its not thick enough for its title. The paint has a 2 year guarantee on its colour, there is another tub called Ronseal fence life Plus +, that has a 5 year guarantee but its the same paint only with a 5 year guarantee on the colourfast.
My next challenge is to find some Cuprinol Ducksback fence paint in grey and try that.
Those astute of you may see that the video wasn't edited exactly in chronological order, but hopefully you get the idea of the three coat explanation.
Thanks for watching and reading this.

Thanks for sharing. I had the same with old fences with a brown colour that is now faded. Put two coats of Rich Cedar on but the old fences do not look as good as the new due to the previous colour and not the condition. Was thinking maybe next time I would rough sand it. Seems a chore but coating two times is too!!

Sanding!!!......forget that mate, I'd rather stab pencils in my eyes. Thanks for the contact.
Fab 4 metre brush ! 🙈😂😂 made me smile.
First of all l really dislike painting, had 18 panels 6x6 to do, really wasn't looking forward at all, decided to buy a Wagner electric sprayer, saves a lot of time and gives great results, l did 2 thick coats.
nice job

Always pressure wash a fence first before I paint. The paint will absorb in the wood better if it is free of old paint mildew.
Easiest way is to really load the brush up and start at bottom and brush upwards to take the paint and any drips with you, I had it down to a about 30’seconds a slat , nice thick coat too
I got this paint and I put it on new fences and no Word of a lie I’m on my 6th coat and second tub and that’s only one side of my garden it’s crazy as if you get any other colour it takes two coats and it’s perfect I’m going nuts over here

Thank you for this comment. A previous commenter said that it would work better on a new fence, clearly there are problems with this fence paint. In future I won't be using anything other than Cuprinol Ducksback.
Used this on our rough sawn garden gate and will not use again. Even after correctly applying 3 coats I find that this paint washes away after about 6 months. I then made rough sawn seat with same timber but used Cuprinol ducksback instead . After 2 years the seat looks brilliant and has had another coat this year. I would certainly not use Ronseal again as the Cuprinol may be a little more expensive but results are far better, ie does not wash out.

Keith, thanks for joining the club of disgruntled Ronseal users. It was the intention of this video to help people 'not' buy this paint. Unfortunately a lot of people are only finding out once stung for several pots. You're comment supports my quest to educate homeowners. Cheers mate.

Usually use Ducksback ,but tried the Ronseal ,one time.Simply no where near the performance of Ducksback .Found Ronseal garden paint to also be a poor performer, when using on previously painted wood.
When I start a job I consider myself a quick worker, but boy oh boy, this fella is fast!. Ronseal is useless, it is so thin and watery that within a few weeks it begins to wash off!. I'm surprised that they can still sell the rubbish!

The benefits of the speed up function of Premier Pro, wish I could work that fast on a normal day. It's already started to wear off where, the Bamboo which has trebled in size since this video, gets knocked about by the wind.

Hi Danny, Thanks for the comment. If I had the chance again with more info, I would definitely put a dark undercoat first. Hopefully you won't get the same issue I had.
I have the exactly the same problem with that product but I'm using black over the brown. 4 coats later I've given up...sigh
Thanks for making this video. I am confused with Ronseal Fence Life Plus and Cuprinol Ducksback. Do you happen to know which one would be better for a completely new fence that's never been treated/painted?

@@hopethishelps6706 thanks for answering. It’s quite helpful.
Wish I had seen this video before starting my fence, same issue! Have put 3 coats on to date, and can still see the colour coming through 😢

It's sad actually that Ronseal, a name I once associated with quality, now has been relegated to the bin. Hope you didnt spend too much. Thanks for the contact, cheers.
Thank you , I will not be buying Ronseal fence paint. I wanted to see how people felt about the paint as I always used Cuprinol and been very happy with it. Think after watching two u tubes videos that have said the same it’s a def no no for me. I do think sometimes they make special offer paint that is not as good quality as well. Tesco were selling a Johnson’s paint less money than usual that was also rubbish against their usual paint. Food for thought. Thank you.

Cuprinol all the way. Ronseal is rubbish and uust keeps washing off my ruff sawn gates. Cuprinol ducksback has been brilliant standing up to the weather and no sign of washing out after 2 yrs.
My hubby makes his own wood stain colour turns out dark oak, cheaper and goes further
Doing father-in-law garden, there is a lot of timber to cover, 6x6 panels, sleepers, picket fence so I decided to tape and spray. Anyway as it says on the tub ONE COAT yeh right. Five coats , 8 days later and I can still see the old colour coming through. I gave the first tub a stir WHY Why do they do a special offer on 12litres, is it ten but water down even more to make twelve. I wonder, I know a lot of items have got smaller and cost more, so are we buying more water in Ronseal?

@@hopethishelps6706 here my exigencies with ronseal orange fence life fades and dose not stain forest green is watery and fence life plus 5 years dark oak fades away hours after using it the pest paint for garden wood is cupirnol shades seasonal oak matt finish.
You needed as many coats cos you changed the colour and didn't remove the old paint . Iv just painted all my fences and changed colours prep work is key and mine covered with just one coat as said on the tin
Yeah I had to do 4 coats
Ronseal 17 coats from my experience
Maybe if you power washed and left your fence to dry before applying cause when I did a fence with it last year it was proper thick and definitely took one coat, two coats at most

Hi Ross, someone else commented that and it was a consideration however there were many years of coats on it and I unfortunately believed the ‘one coat’ claim. Someone else also did what you suggested and it still didn’t work. Thanks for the comment.

Thanks for commenting. That’s why I bought Ronseal but I’m now plenty money down when I know I could have spent less and bought a different brand.
Changing the colour is always difficult. I find Ronseal is 💩 to be honest, but you eventually get there. I saw a professional on KZread recommended Cuprinol Duckback. He said the same thing about Ronseal 😆😆

Yeah Cuprinol ducksback was what I would normally use, unfortunately couldn't get it in the colour anywhere. I asked the customer services people in the paint department their opinion and they said they had never had a complaint.... Thanks for the comment.
To be fair to the company who made the paint you are using, it probably would cover with one coat on a new fence .

Your probably more than right however there are those people like me who expect an description of a product to live up to its claim. And the number of layers I had to put on is in my opinion is unacceptable. We live and learn. Thanks for the comment.

It doesn't even cover on a new fence. We put charcoal grey on, and it just made it look like a dirty 15 year old, badly weathered fence! After 3 coats on test areas, it became clear it was a rubbish product. We swapped for Valspar and the difference is like night and day. It's more expensive, but it actually looks like paint when it goes on, rather than a half-arsed watery stain!

Looked better brown.
dont use this crap mate wasting your money they shouldn't make crap like this though ronseal is a good firm and does make a lot good gear this aint one of them as a decorator i use palatine log and cabin or their barn paint which is matt both oil based if on bare timber seal with aluminium primer this will also seal the knots yourll be good for 5 years plus if you have any wood that has gone grey treat with boiled linseed oil first or use wood reviver to bring back it back to live timber
