"Helping your mother fix a computer over the phone is the worst torture." I work in IT where most of my calls are helping 60+ people use a website and reset a password. I take 50-60 calls a day. It. Is. TORTURE.

I once took an entire hour trying to get my mom to log into her gmail. The computer even already had her details remembered. All she had to do was click the damn log in button BUT IT WAS APPARENTLY ROCKET SCIENCE TO HER. When my frustration started showing in my tone of voice, she hit me with a classic Asian mom guilt trip comment. "you know, I patiently taught you how to use spoons when you were a toddler yet you cant be patient with me now"

I feel your pain. I spent like 4 hours helping my mother with her email log in because she needed to log in, in order for the representative at the phone store to access her account. She never uses her email so she would never really remember her password (her friend helped her set up an email a long time ago) and so eventually I had to do all the dirty work to get access to her email.

The best comedic stories do have an element of elevated or exaggerated truth to them. But the best way to relate them to an audience is to channel the emotions a person would experience. Everyone can understand frustration, and storytelling is an over the top form of conveying a situation to elicit a response. Comedy desires humor, fairy tales teach morals, and parables teach a bit of both.

I remember my Mum bought a new car and wanted to know what all her buttons etc were for. So I sat her down and patiently demonstrated each switch/button whilst explaining its function, after each individual button I’d ask her if she understood which she confirmed she did. It took almost 30 minutes of slow and simple worded explanations which i ran through at least twice before on to the next. Once I finally completed the entire interior, I took a deep breath and asked her if she remembered everything. She replied promptly, “not a thing.” That was the last time, everytime she gets new tech and looks at me I immediately bolt...

Holy God the latter bit gave me idiotic levels of flashbacks to me on wechat video trying to set up my mom's new english remote learning classroom. The experience is 90% blind frustration/anger and 10% deliriously thinking that this is exactly like that scene with Patrick and putting the lid on a pickle jar

Tip: Set up remote desktop for your parents. It solves so many things. Just be prepared to learn what kind of porn they're in to though...

Step1. Teach your parents how to use Remote Desktop on 3rd part applications. Step2. If it is for windows and behind firewall, add port forwarding on router Step3. If you don’t have public ip from ISP, go to step1.

I'm a pre-boomer and build my own PC's and have run into so-called professional help desks that cannot and do not fix their own faulty software or organizational issues. Worked on computer sub systems 50+ years ago when they were part tube/transistor and troubleshot with oscilloscopes. So, 1. don't lump all seniors into one group and 2. simply do the job you get paid to do and help those who don't have your skills. Thank you.
