5-5-16, I just attended a Def Leppard concert here in Corpus Christi Texas. I was up at the front wearing a DIO 1985 tour shirt. Vivian saw me, high fived my hand and gave me a guitar pick. Back in 2002, on the Dio Magica tour, Ronnie gave me a high five because I was wearing the same shirt. I think we are all at peace now;, at least I am;)

Viv always said Ronnie promised to make the band an equity deal. That if Holy Diver did well the band would be on an equity footing by Last in Line. It didn't happen. The story of why Viv was fired is because he pushed for it during the Sacred Heart tour and after the first leg of the tour Ronnie fired him and replaced him with Goldy who already knew all the material and had been living at Ronnie's house. I really don't know what the full story is, but I'll say this. If Viv actually expected to get to an equity situation, promised or not, he was naive. If he and the band were promised this it was wrong for Ronnie to promise, because it was a promise he wasn't going to keep. Wendy was very much against the idea and wanted everything to just be about Ronnie.

@@angusorvid8840 Of course he was naive. He was just a kid. Ronnie was a middle aged man. Dio paid him 100 bucks a week and this was the most successful part of Dio's career. You can like Dio and recognize he was a cheap bastard at the same time. His most successful guitar player and co-songwriter had every right to complain.

I met Vivian at demo for Randall amps just before he joined Whitesnake. He was very polite and signed a bunch of autographs.

I met the Dio band on the Holy Diver tour. Ronnie and Vinnie saw the cardboard sword I made as their bus passed by. The bus stopped and they invited me to come up. Vivian was insanely rude to me. He said, "Oh, Christ, no groupies!" and walked back into the back of the bus. Ronnie was looking daggers at his retreating shoulder blades. And here he is, getting me a drink, asking me about myself and where I'm from, gave me a Holy Diver badge that he'd been wearing.

Still AMAZES me that Vivian Campbell plays backup to Phil Collen!!!.......What a trajedy!!!

I agree, but money seemed the issue and Def Leppard is one of the top-grossing touring bands. Stability maybe? Definitely longevity. (Dio slamming them seems over the top, especially hindsight of his death and record sales since Campbell left.)

@@Limbodrive I recently caught a few vids of def leppards Las Vegas stint from a few years ago. And viv was having a ball. He seemed to have took the lead on quite a few of the early Lep songs from high n dry, and on through the night. And the songs sounded fantastic. I'm sure he loved it, as you said he normally has to play second fiddle to phil. But it makes sense that viv plays steve Clarke's guitar parts on the early stuff as it doesn't sound quite right when phil does it.

Phil was Steve's best friend. There's no way viv would want to replace Steve. We all.know he can but he is too decent to take the limelight off of the lappard guys. I'm glad he has found decent guys to.play with.

In every interview I've ever seen with Vivian he was candid, humble, polite and respectful, even of Ronnie.....

@@joecjoe3783 Whenever Dio attacked someone verbally, it's in response to something being said about him first, I think the only exception is Ritchie Blackmore, in that case it was due to negative experiences while being in a band together. I don't think I can recall a situation where Ronnie made negative comments about someone unprovoked, though in Vivian's defense, he and Ronnie likely had some ongoing differences prior to the former leaving Dio in 1985.

@@UKSportsFan I always figured there was a Sharon Osbourne angle to this situation, her name was on everything and she seemed to exert an unhealthy level of influence over him. Musically I’ve always preferred what Ronnie did with Craig Goldy and I’m not a huge Def Leppard fan, but I’m wary of wives who are too heavily involved in the business end of their musician husbands’ careers.

Who is the one person in your life that can make you so angry with just words that you wish they would "fucking die" as Ronnie said here? Someone who you love or care about very deeply. Whoa. He was in good spirits 'til Viv Campbell's name came up. That changed his mood for good, eh?

Sad moment for Dio. I heard Vivian Campbell's side of the story. Dio proposed he would get paid a flat salary for the first two albums. Campbell stated the lighting guys were getting paid more than him. Campbell bit his tongue and honored the agreement. When the band started putting ideas together for the 3rd album, all Campbell did was remind Dio of the original agreement. According to Campbell, Dio told him, "Let's get the album recorded first and then we will talk about it." Smartly, Vivian balked and was removed. Can't blame Vivian at all.

From the instant reaction it's obvious that Ronnie is trying g to defend himself. He was a talented but selfish, greedy, and inconsiderate man. There was plenty to go around for the band that boosted success, but he chose to try to take it all for himself. Magical group and chemistry those years, and Vivian is not an egotistical man.

I idolized Ronnie in my youth. I'm 54 years old and spent alot of my time listening to Dio. I still consider him to be one of the greatest singers of all time. But Vivian Campbell was a great part of Ronnie's success. I never wanted to believe that Ronnie and Wendy would be that way. I used to side with the Dio side . But now I'm not so sure. The real truth is probably somewhere in the middle. But at least we still have the music 🤘🤘❤🔥🔥💀💀⚡⚡

I've met Vivian Cambell 3 times, twice recently and once as a kid. He was the coolest guy. He took a minute to talk to me every time and shook hands, took a pic, and seemed happy to do it.

The main problem is that Ronnie, Richie and Tony all have type A personality's. Their hard headed, perfectionists and Think they know what is best. If you put any combination of these personality's together, eventually its going to explode. Each one wants to be in control. I'm sure when Vivian came into the Dio band, he was excited to have a big break, but after awhile, he probably got tired of Ronnie's "perfectionist" ways and had enough. Its all about what personality's they have. Its like a family. People say things that in retrospect they regret.

Wow. Ronnie was just signing autographs, and someone unexpectedly brings up Vivian Campbell. Just out-of-the-blue. That's the way it happens sometimes, and Ronnie's raw emotion comes out. You can tell Ronnie must have been hurt and insulted by Vivian's behavior ("Have you ever heard the things he said about me?"). He must have felt betrayed too ("and now you're playing with who? Def f***ing Leopard?). I just hope he was able to forgive the man before passing on. God wants us to forgive.

great artist, great singer, overworking himself for his fans... he gave Vivian a chance and they produce some of what I think are some of the greatest songs in the genre... too bad that they could not renegotiate if money was the case or re access the talent and style and effort that Vivian brought to the table right from the beginning... Side note: Vivian had a lot licks that sounded like some of Gary Moores licks when Gary Moore used to play metal... Yet I think that what it mostly came down was the Vivians desire to be more recognized monetarily for the amount of time, effort, creativity that he put into his work with the band... Which brought about negative feelings and comments...which both Ronnie and Vivan made against each other...that obviously messed up the vibe and their relationship... So Vivian went on to play in Whitesnake instead.... not one of my favorite bands but he had talent he got exposure and probably got paid more money.. Just wish that the Band Dio as it was would have made alot more songs with its original members cuase when they were all playing together the songs they produced were like no other metal songs and they didnt seem to be trying to be like any other band with any other sound but their own.

I think the band members on ozzy had the same problem. Actually playing with ozzy might have been even worse hahha. But anyway. These two guys ozzy and dio released some of the most legendary albums in metal music. Randy, jake e lee and vivian Campbell were top during the 80s. Although i think randy had the cleanest guitar playing.

Ironic that he wishes Death on Vivian and Ronnie died a few years later. Vivian also had some serious health issues, but was lucky to have been in Def Leppard where I believe they treated him very well. Dio screwed him over on his first three albums, what a bastard. Actually that isn't true. Ronnie's wife said Vivian told people he hated all the albums he played on with Ronnie, and demanded he be paid as much as Ronnie was being paid. Vivian knows that without Ronnie, and Def leopard he would have disappeared into nothingness to be forgotten forever. Vivian was an ungrateful prick.

I agree! Plus Vivian and Dio helped EACH OTHER become successful, Vivian helped RJD just as much as RJD helped Vivian, because after Vivian left RJD never made another good album or song again. Coincidence? I don’t think so

Like most things, the Dio-Campbell rivalry is probably a two-way street with both men responsible for one another's miseries. Having watched plenty of interviews with both of them they both seem very honest and humble and I don't think that either of them is wrong. Fortunately I think they both reconciled (maybe not in person). Same thing happened between Campbell and David Coverdale.

Watch more of his interviews. Yes, he was nice to fans. He was also a big part of all the failed relationships, firings, band breakups, and whatever else. He was just a man, not some kind of heavy metal saint that was never at fault in all the chaos that seemed to follow him around.

I've read many stories about Ronnie being very generous with his time after gigs, signing and chatting with fans for hours, and I know he had a lot of good friends in the metal community... ...BUT look at all the feuds and inter-band turmoil he went through in his career. My sense he was not an easy guy to work with at all. He was obviously a perfectionist and had high standards, which is a good thing, but I don't think he handled personnel very well. Of course, he was dealing with other controlling, Type A personalities like Blackmore and Iommi in Rainbow and Sabbath, so it's not all his fault, but his inability to maintain a stable lineup in his solo band points to him being very difficult to work for.

Yep and Campbell recently said they had some good times together but... But.... In summary rjd almost had multiple personalities lol. Something to the effect of one min he's funny and wonderful next min he's flying off the handle and gerlnerally very rude and mean. Who knows.

+StarchaserArya True. Dio was known as a nice guy who had mostly nice things to say about his colleagues. He even has praised Blackmore and Iommi sometimes, despite the fact that they both sacked him-Iommi twice. He could be bitter, understandably, but he always gave them their due.

When Lep does tracks from High N Dry and On Through the Night, he’s basically their lead guitarist. Also, he plays all of Steve’s lead licks on everything after that Steve was part of.

I’ll just say this-this is the most disappointing thing I’ve ever heard Ronnie say. But it’s also disappointing that someone decided to upload it. The moment of weakness could have died there. But the guy egging Ronnie on wouldn’t have had it any other way.

I was a big Dio fan growing up. I think Ronnie putting def leaperd down isn't cool. For the record Vinny appice and Jimmy bain took Campbells side. The band Dio was never as good when Vivian left.

i never dug Goldy for some reason, though Magica is a great record. I prefer the sound of the original three records..theres a magic with the somewhat dry marshall sound of Campbell, mixed with Bain and (especially) Appice's drum sound- not to mention the songwriting, which they all were involved in (not just Ronnie). Nearly every album kind of took from the format of those albums, with a few exceptions like Strange Highways (which was more like Dehumanizer). As a side note, I'd like to say I really enjoyed Doug Aldrich in Dio- wish he would've stayed since as much as I love Whitesnake I didn't dig what they did with Aldrich in the band

Yes when Vivian wasn't in the band the music was even close to the first two album's. Things like this happen when you let your wife be your manager. When Dio went solo he was just a warm up band like Elf. If Dio would have paid his musicians better he may have grown into a main line act. Dio was best with Rainbow. You see without creative musicians like Ritchie and Vivian making the music great the singing will never carry a band.

Actually that isn't true. Ronnie's wife said Vivian told people he hated all the albums he played on with Ronnie, and demanded he be paid as much as Ronnie was being paid. Vivian knows that without Ronnie, and Def leopard he would have disappeared into nothingness to be forgotten forever. Vivian was an ungrateful prick.

Vivian Campbell is one of my biggest guitar influences and seeing dio talk about him this way makes me sad I wonder what happened between them

God damn I'm 19 and I love heavy metal to death now, and of course I can never meet any of my famous idols. Ronnie is truly amazing taking the time to sign all of those autographs. But this video came out back in '07 when I was 9 and listening to Coldplay and had no idea what metal and good music even was :

RIP to the greatest singer in the history of metal.

Saw Dio in a Bar in Iowa in the 90's. I was front 3 ft from the stage I had a A couple of ELF albums and a few Dio CD's for him to sign in my hands. The crowd was getting very pushy and Ronnie saw I was trying with one hand to keep from being smashed into the railing that surrounded the stage. He reached out and grabbed the albums and cd's so I could have both hands free. He held up the Elf album and had a big smile. Sat them on an amp and after the show handed them back. Afterwards when he was signing he signed them all and got pics with him. Heard many stories about Dio and Vivian I think there was a lot of hurt between them. All I know is the music they created was amazing would have loved for a few more albums.

I had no idea Ronnie didnt like Vivian. I honestly dont know much about Vivian, other than he's been in Whitesnake and has been with Def Lep for round 20 yrs now...I think he's a great guitarist. And recently, liked his FB page. He's actually quite funny...and I'm sure you all know by now that his cancer has returned. Sad that Ronnie said that about him...Ronnie was amazing. But everyone's entitled to their opinion, and we like who we like in this world.

Yes. Dip was jealous. Watch the 83 live of man on silver mountain. U can see dio tries to sing over vivs playing. Dip wanted the limelight. Nadty little man and Tony Martin was way more powerful and skilled. Dip songs all sound the sane and r low vibe. So much anger in this guy.

Saw the original band on the Holy Diver tour at the Saenger Theater in New Orleans. That was a helluva show.

Dio was in 3 successful bands before going solo... Vivian was like 19 or something when he joined up with Dio and Vinnie Appice. So no, that's where he got his start.

That's too subjective. Who is to say that Vivian Campbell couldn't have gone to another artist/band and found equal success? I love Campbell's work and his talent had nothing to do with who he played with. Like saying DIO would be nobody without Black Sabbath.

This is sad all the way around. Number one, RJD fired Vivian because Vivian dared to call him out on financial promises after hanging in there through 3 records and tours. RJD would not stand up to Wendy, his wife, and own the promises he made. Vivian and Ronnie then said horrible, hateful things about each other in the media for years. Finally after Ronnie's death, Vivian came to grips, opened up and says he regrets the things he said. RJD was awesome, but he was wrong on this one. And he could never escape the void left when Vivian moved on. The band was never the same. Campbell's sound was as much a signature for that band as RJD's vocals. I wish the two had made amends before Ronnie's passing.

The guy egging on Ronnie is such a sycophant! Sickening. Ronnie probably regretted saying these things later on. I will say that the irony is insane. He wishes Vivian would die, and he gets cancer, and sadly passes. Vivian gets cancer, and beats it. I really wish they could've patched things up. I would've loved for them to make more music together, but it would've been heartwarming for them to reconnect as friends again, if nothing else.

Ronnie is classless here. Vivian wouldn’t slander Ronnie like this.

I don't know the background of their feud but I think it's not right to bash Def Leppard cos of Viv... DL's early albums were fantastic rockers, their sound only started to be more and more processed after the drummer Rick Allen lost an arm in a road accident. That they stuck with their one arm drummer and played on with a modded drum rig, that alone deserves anyone's respect. The time came when they really lost their groove was after the demise of their guitarist Steve Clark... He was IMHO the guy who gave all their songs those simple yet catchy riffs. So, to me, Def Leppard are legends in their own way. But, I do agree with those who said Viv didn't really shine after his mind-blowing song writing and guitar performances in DIO. He just kind of faded away...

I mean, who wouldn't be pissed when someone else does the same thing? I am just saying, why couldn't Vivian just agree with his leader and listen to what he wants, thus continuing his work and reputation as a Dio member? Personality problems? If Vivian actually stopped arguing and thought about his pre-Dio (rookie) career, he would have never thought about openly criticizing Ronnie and his work till his death.

last week def leppard played in my town (porto alegre). they played in a muddy puddle, all money, or coins, were up for grabs. Dio is a rocknroll immortal.

The nasty and "little" sides of great artists.... Friendly to take time to sign autographs, but very ungrateful towards his ex-bandmate: Campbell made Dio famous too, it's not just a one direction story. Sad to see, very very sad to see....

It's just like Jake E Lee with Ozzy. Wendy Dio's managing was just like Sharon Osbourne's. They expected Jake and Vivian to be content making session musician wages even after a couple of solid albums. It's unfortunate if you read interviews of both Jake and Vivian. Both had their song writing severely constricted, with Ozzy and Ronnie shooting down anything riff wise that branched out a bit musically and wasn't the same old shit that showcased the vocals. If the two singers had realized at the time they were just slapping the paint job on the Ferrari adding vocals on top of the songs, there probably would have been several more great albums left in the fridge. Of course things were going to grow acrimonious. If you're an a double s hole to your employees and they're the ones really doing the work, once you fire them don't expect them to have good things to say about you.

Wow I've never seen Ronnie in this type of light. Sheds some light on what Vivian said that when he wants to be vicious he can be very dark. Vivian is a great guitar player and playing in Def leppard was good for him and them.

A sad and bitter end of course, but after listening to Viv today we can only thank him (Vivian) for being honest and keep on doing what he loves and what he does better than anyone!

What's notable about this and makes it above "he said, she said" is that Ronnie has always been a very kind and humble artist and really nobody in the industry ever had a bad thing to say about Ronnie- so if he's that outspoken about Vivian he must have pulled some underhanded shit we don't know about. Ronnie is no Kevin Dubrow despite possibly inheriting his wigs. LOL.

That counts for something. He also said that ""We wanted the band to be rock n' roll band with a classical attitude, that's what we always wanted to be. And then when I started to hear the band become the band that started doing songs like 'I surrender' and 'Since You've Been Gone' then from then on it made no sense to me." So you're right about that.
