In Brazil, we don't call him Ronaldo, we just call him 'O Fenomeno', 'The Phenomenon'. He truly was a phenom out there on the field. So glad that I got to see him, and remember his great skills in that 2002 World Cup. Incredible talent... like a bolt of lightning

I remember when he was in his prime, he was unbelievable, there was no youtube or anything like that so when you had the chance to watch a game featuring Ronaldo you almost didn't want to blink because you knew you were watching something special. He never played for a team that I supported so I still remember that feeling of jealousy for not having a player that could control and touch the ball the way he did. He would just glide through the field and the ball would listen to his every command.

Best ever player for me. I remember the first time I watched him in Confed 1997 game against Czech Republic. My parents were just talking about him and I was really curious to see this player who had a similar name to mine. I was only 8 years old and was blown away. I liked soccer but after I watched this guy, I started loving it and following it. I even said I wanted to play for Brazil even though I am not from there. It's always inspirational to see how he overcame his injuries. No debate for me. R9 is the best ever.

I was lucky to have my teenage life in the 90's, where I could watched R9 at his prime. I have never seen a player like him, he's above everyone else to this day.

I remember in 1998, brazil vs denmark, a world cup match. Denmark destroyed my country Nigeria in the previous round and i hated them (on pure footballing level) for that. Then they met RONALDO and Brazil in the quarters. That match will live forever in my memory. Ronaldo played like an angry beast against Denmark. His touches, dribbling, strength and 2 assists were truly phenomenon in that match. After that game, i rated him above every humans from any profession in the world. He is truly a PHENOMENON. We will never see someone with half of his skills again in this planet.

I do remember that game when the Danishes would come at 6 people to get Ronaldo, and still they could not manage to and the clever R9 would run away to let the others have space to score (Rivaldo)

still remember johan cruyff said just weeks before the 2002 world cup answering the critics on ronaldo. he said "yes, he is only 80% of what he was before both of his knees were injured, but yet 80% ronaldo is still the best ever" and the rest is history. brazil won the cup and ronaldo scored 8.

Trophy cabinet at club level: 5% (though he won a good amount of trophies for Brazil of course). Ronaldo probably has the worst skill to trophy ratio in football history. So good yet not decisive enough to push the teams he was on.

He was adept at both styles of dribbling - going straight in a line beating defenders (gambeta) and doing tricks with the ball (GINGA). Simply the greatest dribbler of the ball ever even with a dodgy knee and weight issues.

At the prime of his career, once he got the ball you can notice 3-4 players tried to close him down. His acceleration, dribbling, feint and shooting(with both legs) was godly. The real Ronaldo.

The guy was just damn incredible. Still no one comes close to the greatness of Ronaldo. The REAL Ronaldo.

Both players have the same athleticism, speed and creativity; perhaps Ronaldo has fancier tricks and dribbles, while Pele can use the movements of his opposition a bit better to his advantage. But then again, Ronaldo is faster then Pele. Overal, I think they are a tie, and only after those two comes Maradona.

But Pelé was a Mid Field not a Foward and, even though, scored much more gols than Ronaldo, more than 750 goals only in official matches, Pelé had defensive skills, and had a lot much more quality with long passes and using his head. In his era, no substitutions was allowed and also no yellow or red cards, the player got to play all 90 minutes off all games. Pelé was a substitute Goalkeeper of Santos, just because no substitutions was allowed, and have never conceded any goals. He had all skills off all players with both feet and head too, and no flaws. He was smart. He dribbled. He was fast. He jumps higher than some goalkeepers. He could shot strongly with both feet. There are no possible parallel with no other player. See his videos, knowing that only 10% or 20% of his matches was filmed. He scored in a final World Cup match with only 17 years old, twice!! Pelé have played 4 World Cups and won 3 of them. Pelé is, by far, better than all soccer players until now. I love Messi, I love Ronaldinho Gaúcho, Zico, Maradona, Rivellino, Beckenbauer, Zidane, Cruyff, etc, But no one is about the same level than Pelé.

R9 is the best ever. In the 90's I use to watch CNN "world sport special" just 2 see his highlights in South Africa.

Love how he makes icons of the game look like little boys talking about their childhood hero. The one true phenomenon.

This is the real Ronaldo that will remain in my heart forever !!

Actually people should not compare other players to him as he is an exception of existence, he is not comparable. If not for his nasty injuries who would've known what he could've acomplished. I was born in 1982, I am proud to say you young people never know what football can be like because you never get to follow Ronaldo.

Still after his two knees operations,he won a W Cup and was great playing for Real Madrid. He did accomplished more than any player after his injuries. Any other would quit the game after that second tragedy game when his knee almost popped out. Still remember as if was today,was his first game after recovering from the first big one. I was 100% sure he would never play again,he came back and won the W Cup.

His play was pure and clean football.No dirty pushing or physical obstruction. I have never seen him loosing temper or angry even while his opponents resorted to commit physical fouls.Watching him play was like listening to great melodious tune or song.Indeed sheer delight and mesmerizing. What an artistry and magical quality he exhibited. While writing those magical movements of his play are still dancing before my eyes.

I remember watching him in the Brazilian league in 1993, at just 16, and the stuff he did there was beyond insane. He was absolutely dominant from the get-go. It was like he was playing against kindergarten kids, yet he was just a 16 year-old rookie! I really wished he had played at least one game in the 1994 world cup.

I was 10 when I first heard about him in 1996- on sky news they said he's the most valuable player in the world- so I thought who is this, then one day Barcelona were playing... And wow!! I became a fan forever, and my love for football become deeper!

Does anyone else notice, during most of his dribbles he leaves the defender just falling on his ass, messi is great and can beat any defender, but Ronaldo he just blows past them leaving destruction in his wake.

Messi & cr7 may have more goals than r9 even neymar ,aguaro, Suarez & lawandoski will surely pass r9 goal tally at the end of their career but nobody has as much impact on football as r9 had. He could run like a rugbyplayer but with the ball at his feet and having the ability to dribble between multiple defenders.

I am 33 years old,still i haven seen a player like Ronaldo phenomeno,So far he is the best player in the world ......Ronaldo and messi are good player,amazing but we can describe their tactics mostly how they will trough defender,but Ronaldo tactic is undecribeable how he got trough defender ,this clearly shows He is the Best ever footballer that the world have ever seen its my thought 😁

PSV Eindoven. there is where is career begins 94-96. 17 years old. Already the best of Nederland. 96-97 Barcelona. 97-02 he played fore Inter. i believe his best period was 94-98. before WK98. When he was 17-21 years old. Very very fast. long distance dribbels, unstoppeble. after that he became heavier. but still scored alot. and did amazing things and became a legend. Eindhoven still love U Ronaldo

I remember the first time I saw him with the ball for inter. Running with the ball so close. He was like Maradona but more faster and direct. And about a foot taller. What a sight

The real Ronaldo was too fast in doing pretty much everything on the pitch. running, dribbling, passing, scoring goals.Plus his strength, power in his two legs. He was even better in his prime time without those injuries that ended his career too soon!

The speed and accuracy of R9 superior to anyone who preceded him. His moving plays as works of art... I had the honor of seeing him play live simply magical. Thank you Ronnie

As far as I know, R9 made me love football and I'm sure he inspired many other kids including Zlatan who acknowledged. I dont remember him faking for a penalty or free kick. No one get a name "el phenomeno" by mistake. Best skill ever. Very accurate in front of the box. Good in long and short distance strikes. I love Messi too but honestly the passion and the love R9 put in my heart was too much. Those who watched Pele and Moradona may argue which is understandable. so he didnt get those great pases from eg. backham or r.carlos or zizu or ronnie or rivaldo? he played in a great orchestra and yes he had many great solo parts,but as a part of a team. thats the real magic of football -the team the characters the tactics and the strategies- like a great drama with many turns and changes

If there 3 players on whom I would bet to beat the whole opposition team alone that would be Ronaldo,Maradona and Messi(based on the players I have seen so far)...

Owen a European player of the yr call him the "real" Ronaldo and say he is the best. We all know Zlatan has the biggest man crush on the guy. The whole French 98 World Cup winning team are simply in awe with him. Mourinho a champions league winner and trained quite a few good players through his time say Ronaldo is the best he has ever seen, I'm sure I heard Capello say the same thing even though they did not get along. I puke when I see or hear people gushing over C.Ronaldo or Messi..geez they can score all they like, they will never be anywhere as good as Ronaldo.

Alex Esca when r9 won the WC, he had ronaldinho, rivaldo, Carlos, cafu , dida by his side.. But when romario won it, he was kind of alone. Like he was in the same situation as neymar. So romario for me

Kids can argue all they want about Messi and CR,but fact will never change. The guy did it when the rules and referring was in favor of defenders,in fact he got injured brutally twice.

I grow up watching him.... I started watching and playing football only because of him....love you ronaldo... I really miss you in brazil team..... Its 2019 but your impact in football is incredible and its hard to erase...love you from India....

The best combination of power, speed , acceleration and skills I have ever seen in one player. Pele I saw once when I was a teenager...! I saw them all .. Cruyff, Maradona, etc up to now CR é Messi.
