Ronald Reagan says 'sorry' to Margaret Thatcher in private phone call

In 1983 President Reagan apologised to the British prime minister after the US invaded Grenada - a Commonwealth country - without giving her advance warning. This newly released tape recording of a private telephone call between them reveals the conversation.

Not just friend, Grenada was an "Overseas Realm", that is the Queen was still Head of State. In effect, Reagan had just declared war on the Queen, which meant he had declared war on Britain. That was the embarrassing bit. It's generally regarded as bad form to accidentally go to war with an ally!

@@liamnanninga But Britain was, and an attack on one of the Queen's realms was automatically an attack on Britain. However, the situation was well understood, and it was really just the discourtesy of not informing Mrs Thatcher in advance that was the problem. That put her in an embarrassing position and Reagan was apologizing for doing that. Mrs Thatcher had to make a statement in Parliament explaing why foreign troops had, technically, invaded British soil without British permission. It was really just a matter of diplomatic niceties. No one was really worried about what had happened, just about the way that it had happened.

  • @moboy656

@@sirderam1 It was not automatically an attack on Britain. You clearly don't understand how sovereign nations work. This was not still a British overseas dependency like the Falklands or Bermuda. Thatcher didn't even like the commonwealth of nations all that much and would have preferred to focus on the United Kingdom alone. Grenada recived its **independence** from the United Kingdom on 7 February 1974... From that point forwards actions taken upon it means there is no such thing as "automatic attack on Britain". The Queen has not even visited Grenada since 1966, before this attack even took place. Its not as if she was going to be placed in prison for being Queen of the Island if this all went down.

@@moboy656 All of those things you mentioned are irrelevant. It means nothing how the UK PM felt about Grenada or when was the last state visit to it. What mattered was that Grenada was an Overseas Realm with Queen Elizabeth as its head of its state, and this consituted an invasion of territory under nominal British sovereignty. American imperialism once more humiliated the British government, and the subservient British took it without a fuss.

That’s probably because Reagan and Thatcher were probably the closest of friends that 2 foreign leaders could ever be. Their shared values greatly outweighed their differences and from a political standpoint, most likely the strongest relationship between the U.S. and Great Britain. If you think about it, the mere timing of the Reagan and Thatcher governments running in concert when both nations needed each other’s support the most since WWII, is nothing short of a political miracle.

She was obviously not happy about the invasion, but had to support it publicly for diplomatic relations. I've always felt that they both played the contrast (warmly extroverted and courteous American-v-politely reserved Brit) so well that it helped to foster a genuine friendship between them. She insisted on attending his funeral in person, many years later, against strict doctor's orders. Obviously there's a great deal to criticise with regard to the regimes in other countries that they both supported. Purely in terms of how leaders should conduct their communications with eachother, however, they both strike me as exemplary in this call.

In the U.K. whenever the PM picks up the phone to a foreign leader, there’s about 20-30 other people listening in: the foreign Secretary, her private secretary, the PUSS at the foreign office etc. At least this was the case during the Thatcher years.
