Ron Hamilton's Testimony of How He Became Patch the Pirate

Ron Hamilton never planned to become a pirate; it just happened, in a divine way. In 1978, the discovery of cancer in Ron’s left eye resulted in the loss of his eye. The surgeon removed the bandages a week later and presented Hamilton with a black eye patch-the real-life prop that thrust him into his role as a pirate evangelist. Everywhere he went, children pointed and exclaimed, “Look! A pirate!”
“Hearing a doctor say I had cancer and may die was a very sobering experience,” he says. “Many people would see the loss of my eye and the need for wearing a patch as a great trial. But I see it as one of the greatest blessings of my life. It reminds me that God teaches us the greatest lessons in the deepest valleys.”
Immediately following the loss of his eye due to cancer, Ron Hamilton penned a song based on Philippians 4:4 - Rejoice in the Lord. Its message has encouraged many listeners who God has called to journey through a dark valley.

Patch the Pirate (aka Ron Hamilton) "sailed off to his Heavenly Home" with this evening's sunset, 19 April 2023. He will be sorely missed. Prayers for his wife, Shelly, and their 4 children and extended family.
I have always enjoyed hearing Ron Hamilton's story. I just want to say thank you for the song "Rejoice in the Lord". Right now I am going through a difficult time and needed to hear this. God could have easily taken my life, but sought to spare me. I only hope that my testimony will help someone and I can reach as many people as you have. When cancer surgery came for my husband in 2004, he could have lost his eye as well, but since the optic nerve was connected, it couldn't be done. During that time the testimony and singing of Rejoice in the Lord by Ron were a special blessing to our family. Since the tumor couldn't be taken out without blinding him, and the tumor was growing aggressively, they said he would be with the Lord very quickly. We never know what the Lord will do, however, and he is still with us in 2020. for which we are very grateful!! Whatever the outcome, we can Rejoce in the Lord, He makes no mistakes!!
Job 23:10 ~ "When He hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold." My children learned all the PTP stories and songs when they were little, and now their children are learning them. You have touched so many lives, Ron Hamilton. Words cannot convey my gratefulness. God bless you and your ministry.

I enjoy Patch the pirates music. I am a grandma. We listened to music when my children was little. I heard him and got his records when they had come to Skeels Baptist Church. My granddaughter is six months old. it is funny watching her expressions. She sticks out her bottom lip. I say she had the poochie lip disease. I liked it up on the phone. I also listened to Ron's testimony about coming Patch the Pirate. May God continue to bless people with his ministry. Lila Goodenow
What an incredible blessing that was to hear! All the countless people that have been ministered to by that song and his testimony. We are praying earnestly for his wife as she goes through her great struggle now with him having Alzheimer's. May you rejoice in the Lord through this struggle, Mrs. Hamilton.

I grew up listening to patch the pirate. My second born son was diagnosed at 13mths old with stage 5 bilateral retinalblastoma. He underwent a lot of treatments and they were able to save his eyes and him. Now he's 20yrs old and we just found out he has cancer again in his left eye and is gonna loose the eye and eyelids. Today for absolutely no reason the song Wiggle Worm popped in my head and I began to sing it out loud and surprisingly I remembered the words. My kids asked me what I was singing and I explained. Then I looked up Mr. Hamilton and read how he became patch the pirate. I got chills...it said he lost the eye in 1978-same year I was born-left eye lost to cancer. My son never gets down about news from the doctor, just smiles and tells people God will see him through. I wanted to share this with everyone and I also want to thank Mr. Hamilton for giving kids Godly stories that entertain them so much while teaching them about God. I don't think this was all a coincidence and like Mr. Hamilton I know God has a wonderful plan for my son.

That`s crazy. Hope everything will go well for you and your family. I don`t really remember how I first started listening to Ron Hamilton. But I know my dad got me into him. I think this was the first song I heard from him. My dad went to be with the Lord in 2020. Though I know he wasn`t there to listen to me, I sang some of Ron Hamilton`s songs on his birthday, Thanksgiving, and Father`s Day.
Amen! Your music and testimony will forever be a blessing. You showed us that God can use our deepest sorrows, biggest downfalls, and hardest battles for His glory. You've inspired many hearts to, no matter what, Rejoice in the Lord. Thank you, Ron Hamilton. Praising God for your life. 🤍
I regret that I have but one like to give to this video. As a missionary on deputation in 1987, my family and I passed through Greenville and (long before google) managed to find the office of Majesty Music. We happened to catch Ron in the office, and my sons (5 & 7) got to meet one of their first heroes of the faith, Patch the Pirate. Each was given an autographed copy of Rejoice in the Lord. Thank you Ron (and the whole Hamilton family) for allowing God to use you to make a difference in so many lives.

Glad I'm not the only one!
Years ago when we were raising our family....Patch the Pirate was part of our home...We replayed an album and I feared it getting worn out so decided to copy it to a cassette instead and this made it easier to bring along on trips also. Our six daughters and four sons would remember his voice and stories. My husband and myself thoroughly loved listening as well and never tired of hearing them. What a beautiful testimony in song...my husband and I listened to this video with tears of joy at the message of his life. Thrilling that we can watch videos on internet after all these years...
I love that song rejoice in the Lord I have learned a lot from Ron Hamilton to make the best of each situation!

His voice was a major part of my childhood. It's been years since I've heard his voice, and so many wonderful memories came rushing back. Thank you for your service in the Lord's army, Ron!
I owe a lot to Captin Patch he saved my life and showed me that my eye problems have a reasen and that there are a lot of others who have it worse off than me

I grew up listening to Patch the pirate it was and still is a huge part of what grew me closer to Christ in my walk with him I'm 18 now and it still helps me grow and it'll never stop helping me grow closer to Christ

I remember this at Southside. I 1982-1988 my children were born and brought up listening to the Patch the Pirate stories on tape. Now my grandchildren can listen to those and the new stories. You have been a blessing to all of us!

I remember growing up listening to Path the Pirate. I even helped my Mom with Patch the Pirate Club teaching children several years ago. I am now a Pastor's wife and a lightning survivor. I was just diagnosed with breast cancer. While I don't comprehend God's purpose, I do have a peace that God has a plan. I pray that I too shall come forth as gold and bring glory to God through it all. Praying that God will turn this trial in a blessing. Thank you, Ron & Shelly Hamilton, for being godly examples in the midst of your trials.

mets2128 update: Ron’s dementia is now stage 6. He’s been battling it for 8-9 years. Since 2011. It’s FTD.
