Ron Greenwood and Don Howe interview (1982 World Cup)

When interviewed by ITV's Jack Charlton, England's managerial team of Ron Greenwood and Don Howe defend the tactics they used the previous day in the dull 0-0 draw against West Germany during the second group phase of the 1982 World Cup.

I'm too young to remember the 1982 world cup, but everything I've ever watched and read about it suggests to me that, for the British teams, fans and media, it was at least as much a holiday as it was a football tournament. This video does not alter my opinion. Spain should have another world cup. It would be amazing.

It was said of Don Howe that the only time he ever smiled was in the full squad team photo - as it was the only time EVERY player was behind the ball.

Was heading off on a Camping holiday when this fascinating Discussion was taking place. On the following Monday watched England exit the Tournament, after a Tedious 0-0 draw against Spain, in a Bar in Paris. Ended up on a campsite in Italy full of Germans watching the Final took. So glad Italy won 😂😂😂!

Howe didn't replace Edwards, he was already in the squad and was a full back not a half back, Bill Slater and Maurice Setters came in for the half back cover with Eddie Clamp/Ronnie Clayton the main Right Half's.

I think Ron Greenwood was a very underrated manager for England. Two qualifications out of two and unbeaten in Espana '82 during his five years as manager. This was pretty impressive considering that England hadn't played in a World Cup since 1970 and had failed to qualify for the previous three international tournaments prior to his appointment in 1977.

I've long been interested by how Clough and Taylor would have played England in this period in the late 1970s and early 1980s..I think they would have gone with this team, playing like a 4-3-3, Shilton in goal, V. Anderson/T.Butcher/Alvin Martin, D. Statham...G.Cowans, (Screener) B. Robson/G.Hoddle/..T.Woodcock, C.Regis/T.Francis..It would have been Kevin Beattie for Alvin Martin if his career had not ended at end of 1980..

During his tenure with England what Greenwood needed was the type of attacking players he produced at West Ham like Peters and Hurst and the tragedy for him was the clubs did not produce them for him. In the 1982 World Cup when he needed deputies for Keegan and Brooking, they were not there. I would not accept that Greenwood was anything other than a success and in his spell he did more for England and English football than anyone else in the history of the game.

These gentlemen are doing a fantastic job analyzing the game. It tells me that the typical English game, characterized by long balls from the back, is just a cliche. In fact, it’s an insult compared to the knowledge displayed by them.

Weeks before the 1982 World Cup, the sportswriter Tony Francis, having been turned down for an interview with England manager Ron Greenwood said pithily: ‘There’s one thing better than getting an interview with Ron Greenwood, and that’s not getting an interview with Ron Greenwood’.

@@alwilfrid I think you've encapsulated it. It is a massive thing now, vast amounts of money, preparation, facilities, wage packets. With the effort, money and talent available, the final is the minimum we should expect. The average fan has to shell out so much for tickets and soon they'll need full covid injections. It's a game for the millionaires and big corporates though now. I just cannot get enthused with that. And the lionising of non-white players has reached ridiculous levels where St Marcus of Rashford now dictates government policy. We live in clownworld now and football is reflecting that. The last euro comp was just distraction from the destruction of your country and people. It's a facade. I wish people would see what a sinister world we're heading into and channel their energy in the right places.

Nonsense you write Kailash Patel. I suggest you watch the interview from 4mns 50 seconds. Don Howe was a superb defensive coach who was 2nd to none in English football. He was one of the reasons of Englands successes in the late 80's and at Italia 1990 not to mention his involvement with Wimbledon and Bobby Gould for the 88 Fa cup win. The reason why we went home unbeaten was because of the silly format being used then plus a fit Paul Mariner and Trevor Francis were not as good as 'Keegan and Brooking' up front for England. If Brian Clough had of been in charge and The FA stopped appointing "yes men" only then may it of been different
