@mausalus09 Those wide, thin wings actually provide a different use - they give tons of space for forward-facing weapons and thermal radiators. A big freakin' cube isn't a perfect design by any means even if there isn't any atmosphere to deal with. You have to design around the role and necessary systems of the ship. The Borg find cubes to be most optimal because their ship designs are highly decentralized and focused on carrying as many beings as they can, with plenty of space for more. But it also makes for huge target profiles from all angles, with tons of weapon blind spots where the ship may only be able to utilize at most a sixth of its weaponry in some cases. It has to waste a lot of energy fighting atmosphere if it does have to land on a planet's surface as well. And other races can't exactly use such a design due to conventional warp drive designs requiring external components like rings or nacelles. Modern real-life spacecraft, in fact, deviate from cube-shaped designs beyond a certain size. The International Space Station, for example, is made up of a large number of cylindrical modules and truss frames as it needs incredibly large solar panels to generate the necessary electricity to run some of the experiments on the station. As for the shape of the habitable modules, that's due to them having to fit in a very specific space - either in the cargo bay of a NASA Space Transit System Shuttle or under the nose faring of a more conventionally designed launch vehicle. There's also the fact that many smaller Romulan ships (and Klingon Bird-of-Preys by extention) do in fact often enter atmosphere.

If an efficient military spacecraft was the design goal, personally I'd go with a "dagger" shape. So kinda like a Star Destroyer from Star Wars (without the huge command brick jutting out of it.) The reasoning being to decrease one's visible cross section while utilizing as much surface area for weapons platforms and the like. The vulnerable engine systems are ideally kept facing away from the enemy. Also allows for spinal mount weapons.

The Federation designs evolved out engineering concerns. Basically The Nacelles are dangerous and more efficient if they have line of sight (hence them being separated from the main hull. The Engineering Body houses a lot of necessary evils as well while finally the saucer was supposed to be exchangeable on designs, that is why they also detach on many ship designs and why you have science vessels with spheroid saucer sections. So you have this sane base you evolve your ship designs from. The Enterprise-D was then a culmination of that in an "Organic Sculpture" in space, so it's stated in Okudas technical manual. I can totally see an accomplished Federation showing off in this way. The Romulans seem to have a similar evolution towards the D'aedrix (I hope that was the name) These are basically show-off ships derived from each species design evolution.

Romulans are responsible for some of the best Star Trek episodes ever. Balance of Terror, The Neutral Zone, Inter Arma Silent Leges, in the pale moonlight, and eye of the needle, even minefield isn't bad because it introduces the Romulan/ Rihansu language. They're also one of my favourite trek species.

I dont see how a large empire can be destroyed by the destruction of one planet. They literally have hundreds. Its like how Pompeii was destroyed. It hurt but the empire went on.

It's more of how the empire was ruled. Imagine if, say, back in the medieval era if the castle with the king got nuked from orbit by some unknown force. How do you think the kingdom would respond? They only lost a small bit of their population, but the people lost was their leadership.

Romulan fashion, it's like watching a furniture textile show. I have sat in chairs with the exact same patterns. Drapes, wall paper, couches, same patterns lol. I bet Roddenberry was friends with Herman-Miller.

It boggles the mind that you were able to tell down to the second when a star would Supernova in TOS, but that apparently the one that hit Romulus scattered the empire and they weren't able to move their seat of power before the disaster

they went over the fact that the Hobus supernova should not have affected Romulus because its lightyears away, but a subspace anomaly caused it to rip through subspace to reach romulus.

I read somewhere (I forget where) that the grief markings were traditionally painted on the face, and that when the marks faded, it was time for the grieving period to end. Nero and his crew, however, tattooed the marks on their faces to represent the fact that their grief from the destruction of Romulus would never fade.

The tal-shaya was a deadly Vulcan martial arts technique that was considered a merciful form of execution in ancient times on Vulcan. This precise technique was performed by applying pressure to the victim's neck, causing it to snap instantly. (I forgot this term!) TOS: "Journey to Babel" The Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion reveals that "Face of the Enemy" writer Naren Shankar named the Romulan secret police (the Tal Shiar) as a homage to this technique.

In-verse, Tal Shiar means something like "Imperial Secret Service". Shiar means Empire, Tal is unknown but has to be something like this. (According to extendet canon.)

The Romulans' clothing changed over the years, but my favorite of their outfits is seen at 4:54. These are reminiscent of the ones they had in ENT & TOS. I can't stand the weird silver tunics with the shoulder pads in TNG.

The Vastam class is also one of the prettiest ships to come out of any faction in STO. The New Republic designs all are generally more graceful than the Imperial stuff.

With Star Trek Online actually explaining more of the Romulan history. They 'Eventually' settled on what was Romulus and Remus. In STO, it is hinted that they started their exhile from vulcan (The Sundering), on Dewa III. And that something irradiated that planet long ago. Unless your going to ignore all of Star Trek Onlines content, in which case, carry on.

My favourite Star Trek race. As a little headcanon joke, the reason for the padded shoulders adopted by the Military and Civilian culture was because of an "inadequacy" to the Klingons who had broad shoulders accented by pauldron like cuffs. A little thing that seemed to add imposing status. In time it became a societal trait, the padded shoulder was a gesture of dominance. If you lacked it, you appeared smaller. Starfleet attaches after the Basen rift incident send envoys to Rihan with uniforms with accentuated shoulders. Riker, joking to Troi aboard the Titan, "its stiff round the collar and my shoulders seem like I'm playing hockey" The Romulans a fledgling race seeking thier own identity for centuries adopt other cultures to their own. They absorbed culture and passed it off as though they invented it. The D'deridex being a design they pilfered and adapted

following the dissolution of the empire and the totalitarian government, several trends appeared. The striking of which was garments that exposed the shoulder entirely as a rebellious act. Exposing flesh with a tattoo. The tattoo denoting grief mostly, or anti alien sentiment. Tal Shiar operatives recognise each other by saluting by touching two fingers to the upper arm almost like a Roman salute. Covering their shoulder. Covering their shame. Like taking off a cap became a salute. A rememberence of "the old ways" ironically originating from the Klingons

I feel the eyebrows, head ridges, and hair are the only things really differing from real Vulcans besides the military attitudes. Romulans are aggressive but it was mostly toned around discovery’s time in the future even fully allying with Vulcan.

Eric Bana was AWESOME as a Romulan. It may be my favorite role for him, in any of his films. Not everyone hates, "JJ Trek," lol I really don't care what anyone says.

Just an FYI, according to the novel Vulcan's Soul, Remans and Romulans are both offshoots of Vulcans. The Romulans gave up their telepathic abilities and the Remans didn't and were enslaved as a result. Over time being enslaved in the mines of Remus it changed their look and other attributes. This actually fits with how Romulans are. If after the Sundering most had lost their telepathic abilities it's very conceivable that they would segregate and eventually enslave those still empowered with telepathic abilities considering how xenophobic they are.

Have you considered doing a history of the races in star trek cuz that would be interesting.. like do one on the Vulcans, Klingons, the Borg, the dominian etc..

What's with the bizarre appearance of the Romulans in the later Star Trek movies? They almost look like Count Orlock in "Nosferatu".

As we saw the the briefing Data gave in Nemesis, Remus is the outer of the two planets, and orbits the Romulan Sun at a different rate than Romulus. I’d be willing to accept the AbramsVerse if we were to consider the “destruction of Romulus” as a mistake made in confusion. The way I see it: Spock succeeded in halting and reversing the supernova, but not before it entered the Romulan System, destroying Remus, not Romulus. Nero mistakenly thought Romulus was destroyed, and went after Spock, and they both disappeared, with the Alpha Quadrant learning just after that Romulus itself did in fact survived. And with their primary source of Dilithium gone (the Reman mines), and the lingering good will from Spock’s sacrifice and the Shinzon incident, the Romulan were willing to discuss trade with the federation as a means to get more dilithium to replace the lost Reman source. This is the only way I will EVER accept the Kelvin timeline as part of cannon.

They have quite a mighty empire

Quite a plothole in the vulcan/romulan concept. Vulcans were capable of interstellar travell thousands of years ago. But either the vulcans or the romulans are technologicaly advanced than all the other major species. Normaly the romulans should have dominated the Alpha and Beta Quadrant by the time of Star Trek.

i dont think the klingons were too far behind them.....and it would have been quite costly(if even possible) to defeat them. they would have easily defeated the humans, vulcans, tellarites and andorians separately, but they all joined forces and became much mightier than the mere sum of its parts. the cardassians would also have been problematic to conquer......

they are also pirates and criminals, often attacking civilian ships and freighters, as seen in Star Trek Aurora.

I'm probably in the minority, but I think I prefer Romulans over Vulkans. Seem a bit more complex and by that extent for me, interesting. Both have terrible haircuts though...

Can you do a Cultural Index series on the Votans from Defiance? The Votanis Collective, like the Xindi in Star Trek, was an alliance of 6 out of 8 alien species that evolved from the same solar system. The 8 Votan species are Castithan, Irathient, Indogene, Sensoth, Liberata, Gulanee, Volge, and Omec. 3,000 years ago, the Indogene built a fleet of arks to evacuate the Votans from a stellar collision that would destroy their star system. They came to Earth and were allowed to colonize areas of Latin America.

Believe it or not in the Novels on the fracturing of the Romulan Star Empire actually reformed the Old Empire into Two separate distinct states the Mol'Rihansu (New Romulan's) more commonly called the Romulan Republic that was a more diplomatic form and had a represented government and was seen as a more peaceful Neutral power than a Aggressive power. Then the Romulan Empire pulled back together after a major civil war with the Romulan Republic. After the war the Two states made peace and recognized each other and maintained diplomatic relations but they where icy and very little talking expect when absolutely needed due to the past war that brought many truths of the Old Empire.

The whole "destruction of Romulus & Vulcan" is something I hope get rectified in Startrek Picard since this is ultimately his fault. We shall see.

Romulan ships in enterprise looked nothing like ones in the original series.

Romulus and Remus founded Rome according to Roman myth. They were twins raised by a she wolf. Interesting that ST used these names.

Lucky for you it's not, technically, canon. It's part of the Kelvin timeline that J. J. Abrams created. So if they ever get rid of the Secret Hideout production company they can ditch the whole thing and go back to the regular timeline.

Consider it non-canon then, if you want to be wrong. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean its not canon. Otherwise I can say the Klingons conquered the Federation because I don't like the fact they didn't. See how dumb that looks?

Didn't the Romulans actually turn on the Klingons with the attack on Kittimer? And Nerendra 3, where the Enterprise C defended the outpost by engaging 4 warbirds, and probably laying the groundwork for the eventual Klingon-Federation alliance.

what is your source of post-Nemesis canon? JJ-Trek didn't go into detail of the Romulan Star Empire post disaster.

Romulans are just Vulcans that never lost their emotions and evolved on a very harsh world. They are genetically the same as Vulcans. Vulcans are the parent species that both Romulans and Remians come from. Both are considered offshoots of the standard Vulcan. Don’t know how Spock managed it but the new Ni’var is looking promising.

The loss of a capital isn't trivial especially in a society like Romulus where society was so tightly controlled. The imperial Senate was on Romulus when the planet was destroyed as the Federation Council would be on Earth. Both organizations rely on their capitals to organize their societies. The loss of which would lead to chaos as they tried to sort how to reestablish order after such a major disruption to society. For example, why should Tellar comply with the position of the government of Vulcan? They submitted to the authority of the Council not a fellow member planet of the Federation. Vulcan itself doesn't have the same authority that the Federation Council possesses and a claim to such legitimacy would be questioned if not rejected. Why should a Romulan colony world submit to the dictates of a Romulan world when the authority was vested in the government of Romulus itself? It doesn't seem that you're taking the issue of legitimacy into account in your assessment. The Romulans would also have to contend with the Klingons. There is quite a bit of disputed territory between them and the Klingons would gladly exploit the resulting chaos that the destruction of Romulus would bring.

I disagree with your U.S. comparison. 100 years ago, there wasn't a contingency in place to relegate authority should the Washington leadership be eliminated. Nowadays, there are protocols in place to determine the order of succession and who'd have authority. We also don't vest our authority completely in Washington. States are somewhat autonomous and hold legitimate authority should the government in Washington disappear. This isn't the case with Romulus. The senate is the only source of authority in the Romulan Star Empire. Eliminate the planet and its source of authority, and there's be disagreement regarding who should lead. The state would fracture with each group claiming legitimacy. This has been fairly well represented in the formation of the Romulan Republic and the Imperial Romulan State. They each claim to be the legitimate successor of the Romulan Senate. I agree with your point on the Federation. Its an idealization of how things could be if everyone was selfless and worked together which just isn't how people are. The dysfunction that is the United Nations demonstrates your point on both the Federation and United Earth. I also agree with you in regards to the movies. Remaking Star Trek with younger actors is a way to say that you've run out of ideas. One of the best things Star Trek did was move away from the Enterprise and expand what we've seen of the Star Trek universe. DS9 really allowed us to see how other races viewed the Federation. I remember an episode where Quark and Garak have a discussion about that very thing and it really showed how growing up on Cardassia and Ferenginar affected them and their views. It also showed what life was like at the frontiers of Federation space where previously we mostly saw what the Federation was like within their own territory. The destruction of Romulus was a great opportunity to explore how that would affect Romulan society and also how the Federation and Klingons would respond. This would also cause tension between the Federation and the Klingons as the Klingons would be more likely do exploit the situation while the former would be more interested in making diplomatic overtures. It was an excellent storytelling opportunity that was missed and one can only hope that will be explored in Star Trek: Picard. The reboot added absolutely nothing to the franchise and was a way to make profit without really having to add anything new which, as you noted, was lazy. I see Discovery as an extension of the Abramsverse and don't consider as Star Trek either.

Liberty Prime It is 100% canon, despite the fact that it takes place in an alternate universe. You can ignore most of its events if you like, but at least the destruction of Romulus actually happened in the Prime Timeline. Please stop shouting.

Did some digging. Apparently in beta-content, the Romulans used genetic engineering to remove the Pon Farr from their genome... but it wasn't flawless as it could still be triggered by relations with Vulcans.

I need to point out an error in your video. I had to check as this error seems to be in several videos and not just yours. The Reman in the official canon are not described as a separate lineage from Vulcans, but in the books including the book series ALL Romulan lore is based on the Reman are descended from those on Raptor Wings but were altered to survive on Remus.

Also, they may have mutual treaty concessions that allow such access; non-contiguous countries do exist in real life (e.g., Armenia [the Ngorno-Karabahk conflict notwithstanding standing]. Comparable problems and the opportunities to solve them also come up when a country is completely enveloped in the territory of another country (e.g., The Vatican, San Marino, Lesotho, ect.).

One thing that bothers me about the Romulans is their divergence in appearance from Vulcans, particularly when it comes to forehead ridges. The two groups have only been separate for about 2,000 years by the time of Star Trek, which isn't even close to enough time for the two groups to diverge into separate species, especially since they live significantly longer than humans. Unless the Romulans have been involved in some major genetic engineering projects or have a widespread practice of plastic surgery, I just don't see how they would develop such a different appearance from their Vulcan counterparts.

My personal head canon is the the Vulcans are the genetically engineered ones. It why they are stronger, smarter, telepathic, have more potent emotions and are prone to psychotic episodes. There seem to be many parallels between vulcans and human eugenics trials.

I bet they do have telepathic abilities like the Vulcans but use them very little except as a weapon. I bet they Pon-farr too but they hide it better than the Vulcans. They might have developed battle fever into fine art. The energy of Plak-tow must run in them strongly and underlies the whole militaristic culture. A whole culture run on suspicion, jealousy, paranoia, and anger..

Romulans probably suppress telepathic abilities or don't develop it enough as Vulcans need training to fully harness telepathy such as the mind meld. Romulans harness and control their emotions through a strict military culture that keeps them in line. Some sources say Romulans got rid of pon farr through genetic engineering but not sure of that is canon

I always thought their planet being destroyed like this was a weak backdrop for what lead to the events of Trek 2009. I find it hard to believe a species with the capability of interstellar travel wouldn't have bothered to study the nearby stars near their home. They had a thousand plus years to do this and something like this would be a top priority seeing how a star blowing up in just a few thousand years as opposed to millions or billions is a big difference on the time scale for a civilization. You'd think they would have done something to slow it down or find a way to remove its mass to prevent it going super nova and become a neutron star.

gimpytheimp, the Hobus Supernova was not an isolated incident I can say no more for this is best explored in Star Trek Online.

So, if the Klingon Empire represents the Soviet Union, is it safe to assume that the Romulans, (especially since the TNG era) can serve as a stand in for the Chinese system?

Using a singularly as a powersorce may become reality. Such s powersource need to be constantly fed with matter since it evaporates by the means of Hawking radiation, that is collected in the powersystems. This evaporation are also why a destroyed vessel will not leave behind a minutare black hole. This time Star Trek got it right even before actual science caught up to them.
