    The thing is, saag aloo is a Punjabi/North Indian dish. So I doubt whether the rest of us Indians would know what's in it is just as a North Indian would not know what's in a Sambhar or a Goan Xacuti. People forget(maybe they're plain ignorant) that India is a sub-continent. So, Romesh is right in asking why his friend wouldn't know what's in a tortellini, using his friend's "logic". He's not right by justifying his anger at having been asked that question with "I'm Sri Lankan, not Indian". No doubt Sri Lankan is a great country, but why employ these stupid distinctions propagated by the West as a reason for not knowing what, in the (not too distant) past, would have been known as part of the Indian sub-continent and Sri Lanka's heritage?

  • @bluepurple6411

    +tov ylixir Sri Lanka has its own separate culture and history. Has always been separate to India even though certain areas have been invaded in the past. It has NEVER been part of India. Had you actually visited the place, you'd realize it. So no, we don't have a caste system, a culture of gang rape, but we do have a very high literacy rate and thankfully no dowry deaths. So it isn't a 'stupid distinction propagated by the West', Sri Lanka has not been part of India's heritage since time immemorial. A little research may do you good.

    That comment 'The rest of you enjoy life' is so deep most people don't quite catch it. Its sort of a double entendre, being vegan, you become aware of the world that you live in. With all the unnecessary suffering and pain caused to animals and the environment, the 'rest of you' enjoy being ignorant to that, which is so sad to the people who are socially aware. Also, i think he means it in the way that when eating animals you are eating a corpse, that once held life, with its own unique characteristics and temperament, and by eating meat you somehow 'enjoy' it. This guy is so awesome, shout out to all the vegans. Peace

  • @hjrmilton

    @hjrmilton

    Fred Leung Yes vegans wear leather shoes, but they don't buy them. These shoes are most likely bought before going vegan and it could be difficult to buy new shoes. I have this problem, i have leather shoes and still wear them, but they were given to me years before i went vegan, and some vegans don't like wearing animal skin, others don't. I do have a problem, but don't have a choice because i can't afford new shoes right now. Same applies to cotton etc. When you say coal mines, are we all not to blame for this? Cause if I'm not mistaken you use coal as well, as does most people, so don't identify vegans as people who use it the most, when everyone uses it. Yes, mines destroy habitats, but in comparison to animal agriculture, its nothing. animal agriculture is responsible for 91% rainforest destruction, the leading cause of all worldwide detriments such as pollution, ocean dead zones, species extinction etc. We are not a species designed to eat meat, we have the ability, but our bodies are 100% herbivorous. We do posses incisor teeth and canine teeth, as do hippos, the have the largest canines in the world but are herbivores. You also see when we eat our jaw moves from side to side, not up and down like a lion, indicative of a herbivore. Out intestinal tract is i think 8-10 times the length of our torso, but don't quote me on that, whereas carnivores is only 4-6 times the length. And whats the deal with breaking down cellulose? Ive never heard of this, so can you explain? Our stomachs have the ability to do something, doesn't mean we should do it when it is causing harm to animals, the environment and peoples health, in my opinion. I have the ability to kill people, but i don't do it because I have empathy. 'Not being vegan doesn't make you ignorant to animal suffering' Right okay, kinda stating the obvious there, not sure what you're trying to say. Those who aren't vegan and talk to people about veganism they are aware of animal suffering yet continue to eat animal products. So you are aware of animal suffering in the meat, dairy and egg industry but don't do anything about it? That makes no sense... I act on what i learn, i learnt about the disgusting practices of these industries, i wasn't happy with what was contributing to and stopped, simple as. Not being ignorant gives you that oppourtunity to make change. The only reason i didn't go vegan earlier was because i simply didn't know, and people that don't know i have a problem but i was in the same situation, and upon finding out, i think its for the good of everything, the animals, the environment and your health to eliminate animal products and animal suffering from your inhuman, irrational lifestyle.

The meat industry is multiple times larger than the vege mock meat industry but nooo let's just question the existence of products for vegetarians shall we and say THAT ITS NOT NEEDED!? yes there are a variety of vegetarian options but unless you've been a vegetarian yourself you will realise that tempeh can get tiring and that you may sometimes find yourself craving a taste of meat. that's where the fake meat comes in! if it doesn't affect you or how you live DON'T QUESTION IT. just let me eat my fake sausages in peace for gods sake.

    Modern day India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka were all part of geographical region that shared cultural, economic and genetic ties that span nearly 8000 years. Apparently, now less than a century of a political existence based on western template has created this narrower identity that is easier to associate, assimilate and differentiate as 'us' and 'them' which seems convenient when using stereotypes like the Bollywood. The differences in India between Kerala, Kashmir, Gujarat and Arunachal is so vast that difference between Kerala or Tamil Nadu in India and Sri lanka, and UP or Bihar in India and Nepal is far far less than when compared to the artificial bollywood stereotypes. This is what I love the most about India and it can get frustrating at times. But from Indian experience, you don't have to freak out if some one reaches out with a reference regarding your roots.

    You have to learn that Sri Lanka was, is and will remain a different country from India. Don't effing think it as a part of your state or a colony. Almost all Indians have that stupid mentality.

    Honestly, all this hate towards vegans need to stop...they are doing something that's noble and its not easy either, its hard. I get how some vegans have a high and mighty, better than thou attitude (and they are the loudest) but that really shouldn't detract from the cause. You have to accept that the corporate meet industry has had horrible implications on the environment, poultry farmers, and not to mention animals.

    The flaw with Ranganathan's 'bee slavery' argument is that individual bees make *very*, *very* little honey in their entire lifetime and also require very little to 'recuperate' themselves. Hence, when we steal a lot of their honey, it is a lot by their standards, but that doesn't mean there isn't a sufficient 'residue' of honey they can use for themselves still in the hive. So it won't 'BEE' the end of the world for them.

    Not true, Bee’s produce enough honey to support the colony and due to collection of honey by humans forces overworking of bees and having to travel further - these are factors in CCD of bees. Collecting nectar and producing honey is an energy intensive process and it is unproductive for bees to over produce honey.

  • @David-ud9ju

    They don't get put in boxes, they live in boxes. The hives are provided for them, because they're perfect for them to build their nests. You do realise that the bees can leave the hive whenever they want, and, if they wanted, they could build a nest somewhere else, but they don't, because the "box" is perfect for them. Also, the amount of honey we take isn't that much compared to how much they have and has very little effect on them as a whole.

    Luke Anthony Are you sri lankan to confirm that? and it's not a sri lankan dish, so therefore I don't think sri lankans would know what a "saag aloo" is. Heck I'm Sri Lankan and I don't know what it is, never heard or seen it in my life. Lol so much for that. Indians and Sri Lankans are quite different culturally and ethically. Good to watch something different for a change and better than watching russell peters recycling his material on different skits.

    +DevonZWay do read my comment above. The only people who would laugh at that saag aloo joke would be the ignorant Western audience. I think Romesh knows this, and he's pandering to them bcz heck they've paid to hear him crack jokes. It's only those who know of Sri Lankan's heritage who will find this painful/shameful and indeed crass.

    tov ylixir firstly where's your comment? secondly "saag aloo" is NOT a Sri lankan dish, it's an Indian dish. Contrary to belief India and Sri Lanka have many different dishes. But I can see why you think it's all the same, being an ignorant white man. Thirdly I'm Sri Lankan and I find him very funny and don't find it painful or shameful at all. It's comedy for fuck sake, don't need to have a cry about it...
