Romanian Air Force in Operation Barbarossa (Part 1)

Ғылым және технология

Romanian Air Force joined the invasion on the USSR from the first day. It eventually fought against two more major powers in WW2 and produced a significant number of fighter aces. Several fighter types were employed by this service such as Messerschmitt Bf-109, Hawker Hurricane and lesser known ones such as Heinkel He-112 and locally developed IAR-80/81.
In this part, we will focus on the early days of Operation Barbarossa.

Special thanks to Bilack for help with Romanian pronunciation! Also, some of the assets in this video are not 100% accurate. IAR-80 is represented here by IAR-81 and Sea Hurricane flies instead of 'regular' Hurricane as WT refused to let me use it in my user created mission for some reason. Thank you for understanding!

Very interesting, didn’t know anything about the Romanian Air Force. Given the circumstances, they should have been allied forces, except for the geography doomed them. Sort of a paradox, who do you join with if you are Romanian, on the one hand there are Soviet swine, The other side, racist Nazis….. YUK!

Did you make these vids with Il2 engine? They are great!!! You may find the topic of the May-1940’s days in The Netherlands interesting to cover. A lot of JU-52’s were destroyed there by Fokkers. It’s said that this crippled the transportation capabilities of the Luftwaffe which hindered the plans for Operation Seelion.

What a masterpiece of a video! As a romanian, it's nice to see that someone finnaly covers the sorties that romania did and the country's contribution in the war. Although romania did a lot in ww2, there's little to no videos and materials on it. Thanks for this vid and i hope you will cover more stuff that romania did, even post-war!

Wow, such an exciting war history topic, thank you! " After the Communist takeover, Agarici was dismissed from the Air Force. Between 1953 and 1955 he was deported to the village Neatârnarea in Tulcea County. In 1955 he was stripped of his rank, sentenced to 25 years hard labor, and imprisoned at the notorious Aiud Prison. In 1964 he was released and his rank of Captain was reinstated in 1965."

@@showtime112 No.... unfortunately he died in 1991 at 70 years old due to illness. But my grandma is still alive and would tell me stories about him and how he got in the airforce. He was born in Constanta in 1921 and would help my grand-grandpa with work at the docks as a kid, later on he found out about aircraft and fell in love with them, trained to be a pilot, but when the germans overthrew our King in 1941, he was picked as a fighter pilot because of his "agresive" flight style, otherwise he would have been relocated as a bomber pilot. He fought through the Soviet Union all the way near Moscow. One of his most impressive stories is about how him and a friend managed to escape with a couple of pilots from an airfield as the russians overrun their positions at the airfield they were stationed and even brought tanks. After we changed sides, he flew missions in Czechoslovakia, and in his post war service, I believe he became a flight instructor untill his retirement in the 1970s. If he would have been an ace, the communist party would have berated him as a public shame and force him to either work in a scrap factory or straight up sent to jail on political stuff. Thats why aces such as Cantacuzino and Dan Vizanty left the country and died away from their families and friends after the war.

Another cool fact, is that my grandma and my mother lived in an apartment block filled with ex military men, one of our neighbors was a IAR80 pilot who fought the americans when they bombed Bucharest trying to bomb the railway station and instead they butchered 3000 civilians and injured 2500 more. He died around 2015-16, at that time I was already pasioned with air SIM games, such as IL2 and War Thunder, and would talk to him about aircraft, he was olways a cheerfull man with his hands in the air trying to gesture the maneuvering of aircraft. I agree that these 'forgotten' air forces of WW2 deserve some mention. I've read the 'Romanian Aces' for the first time more than fifteen years ago and I found it very interesting. It gets even more interesting later when they face USAAF and heavy bombers.

Hello Showtime112, I have wanted to write to you for a long time. Your channel is spectacular, your explanations are very clear, entertaining, and explanatory. You treat topics with great respect and impartiality. I am passionate about military aviation, especially little-known or little-discussed conflicts, which is exactly what I find here. I am from Chile and I was very surprised to see videos of conflicts in Latin America. I look forward to seeing videos in the future about the Chaco War or the Bay of Pigs and of course the second part of this video of Romania in the Second World War. Greetings

Thank you for the feedback. You are definitely the right target audience for this channel 😁 As for your suggestions, the Chaco War is a bit problematic to cover as the airplane types used in it are not covered by any simulation. The Bay of Pigs is a different story and as far as I see it, it can be done. I just need to get the proper inspiration (which is hard to predict in my case).

Most of them were never mentioned by post war history books because romanian history was written by comunists after WW 2. So, as you can imagine, there was no place for them in the Red's historical perspective of that corner of the world, given the fact that most if not all romanian aces achieved this status shooting down bolschevik planes. In some regards, their faith was similar with that of the polish pilots after their return to the Polish People's Republic...Sad ending for such brave souls.

Interesting period. Romania except polish fighters albo bought bombers (PZL-37 Los). Less known fact is that , in 1941 they were used in a provocation aimed at forcing Hungary from joining the war (Basically, it was an idea/suggestion of the Germans). They were repainted in Soviet colors and then bombed Kosice (annexed to Hungary in 1938, now part of Slovakia).
