I feel bad that I was so absorbed in figuring out the MV that I didn't listen to Hyein's beautiful voice. Since filming this reaction, I've listened to the song and can now appreciate her beautiful voice filled with depth and beauty. Her vocals are sooo good and her voice goes so well with IU's. - Lv Loo

I still cannot figure out which one is in the boot. Is it the past and it's IU when she passed, or is it her daughter now also been ended and that's why she now can walk with her mother's ghost.

The person in the boot is Tang Wei: she wears the same overcoat as her character when she find herself on the passenger seat, not at the steering wheel as in the beginning of the MV. It seems an overturned version of the main sequence, in which IU is at the wheel, possibly a change of perspective. Maybe the mother also "hid" her daughter in some way to protect her, if she was ashamed of her own life (check the "cash candy" sign at the beginning). However I have another doubt: when IU is lying on the bed, the red gauze behind her seems running blood to me, as if she was dead or dying. Could it be that the daughter's trauma could not be resolved for a long time due to a tragedy? Therefore she is now meeting her mother in dreams (another sign at the MV's beginning: "details of dream"), finding an understanding of her hurtful actions and having a sort of reconciliation. Just a guess, of course. No clear idea yet about the ending sequence, but the younger woman standing outside the car is IU... her eyes are unmistakable, even if she has an unusual make-up

IU explained that the first verse is about the relationship with a mother, the second one with a friend and the third one with a role model, so I think there are many point of view for the interpretation of the MV, too...

Tang Wei starred in the ‘Shh..’ MV which had its teaser released recently (t/n: at the time of the interview). Hwang Soo-ah also participated as the director, as well as WONSUN JOE and HYEIN who featured in the song. I’m curious about each of their roles. IU: I’ve been working with director Hwang Soo-ah since my teens. She knows me very well. Working with her again now in my 30s, I felt that both of us have grown. That, in itself, is already meaningful. ‘Shh..’ contains the voices of female vocalists from each generation. The lyrics are about important women in our lives. For example, I’m singing about my mum, HYEIN is singing about her first friend. Through the relationship with a friend, she experiences emotions like social relationships, friendship and rivalry for the first time. WONSUN JOE, who is in her 50s, sings about the complicated emotions towards one’s role model. A role model is someone you respect, yet also an obstacle to overcome and can also come as a fresh shock to you. It’s a song about women sharing their complicated emotions that can’t be summarized simply as either love, friendship, obsession or something else. What gave you the idea to work on this ‘Shh..’ project? IU: I was in a conversation together with a female director and a male director, when it came to my mind that between females, more complicated emotions are involved. For example, between a mother and daughter, things like obsession, friendship and love are intertwined. At the same time, I felt that that emotion is extremely important. Since my mother is the one who teaches me about the world. However, the male director did not have such a complicated emotion between father and son, so I felt I had to discuss this emotion with a female. I wanted to delve more deeply into this topic and thought of director Hwang Soo-ah. She listened to the song and said right away that she could relate to it. Tang Wei sunbaenim featured in the music video and it was our first time working together. She is really cool and beautiful. I really admire her. It’s like a new room opened in my heart. I was surprised by HYEIN-ssi’s vocals too. I wanted to listen to her interpretation, so I didn’t really give any comments before the recording session. From a young age, it has always been my dream to work together with WONSUN JOE sunbaenim. I wanted to include her voice tone into this project. She was generous and warm towards me. She is a very well known Chinese actress who is married to a Korean director and she now lives in Korea. The 1st verse is IU The 2nd verse is Hyein The 3rd verse is Joe Wonsun and the narrator is Patty Kim who is an OG in the Korean music industry who has now retired and ives in the United States. This is a song by 4 generations of women teens, 30', 50's and Ptty Kim s 87+ years old.

For what it's worth, Tang Wei wrote a letter to IU after the filming of the MV, in which she reflected on the story and how much it impacted her personally. There are translations of it online if you'd like further information. I found it very helpful, and it helped deepen the meaning of the video for me.

As IU's mvs goes, there can be multiple interpretation. The one that I like is mother (IU) - daughter (Tangwei) relationship. Ofc this is not my own interpretation as i am super confused by the mv 🤯 but its the one i like and i think match the mv. So it is a metaphor of a mother hiding away her daughter from the world (putting her in car trunk), because she doesnt want the daughter to experience/see the pain/hardship the mother must gone thru. In the opposite, the daughter felt bitter and hid those memory/feelings of her mother (putting it in the cellar). But the bonds between them is special, more complicated then simply love or friendship...so the daughter shows the mother all the bitter memories she hid away, the mother is surprised and sad knowing it. Then the mother shows her why she had to hid her away, the daughter now understand why she had to do it. They both remember when they are simply happy and warm together as a young mother and a little daughter. The daughter offering her hands in the end and the hug is a reconciliation between the two. Is the mother a ghost in the story? Or a memory? Or a dream? Yeah maybe, its possible lol 🤯🤯

another take could be..complicated mother daughter..as Iu maybe hid her mother away (heart or mind) due to pain or judgement as IU was raised by her grandma (sent away ..hence her alone on street).. So maybe Iu understands more that relationship and choices.

When IU was young she & her brother had to live with her grandmother because her mother got into debt as a guarantor who ran away & left her to repay. IU resented her mother for 'abandoning' her but to her mother she was hiding/shielding her from the debtors. The grandmother was living in a room infested with cockroaches, often going hungry with only potatoes to eat. Later IU understand her mother's action & even offered to repay the debt but her mother refused the help. Now they are very close & her mother provided the cushions for IU's concerts for sore behinds because they tend to last more than 4 hours.

There's also a lot of history repeating itself in their own lives, so the Mobius Strip is deeply ironic. The young IU used to get repeatedly scammed during her pursuit of stardom, and even when she gained fame, she still used to believe people leaving messages on SNS begging for financial help. She'd send them the money, only to find out she again had been scammed. They are very kind people who believe in good in others.

you both hit on the point that IU 'is not afraid' to venture into taboo topics and speak her mind...with one key trait of hers being to always speak honestly. That is why people love her so much. You mentioned Suga as a comparison - and I think that makes sense. If you go back through IU's history, she has often been the only voice to speak out on topics like hate speech, bullying (she had role with Korean police department for 3 years), and much more... Other artists have made lots of comments expressing their thanks to her - as she has the courage and universal respect to speak so openly on such topics, and others are afraid to speak to openly.

The songs 'Secret', 'Peach', 'Red Queen', 'Eight', the 'Through The Night' mv, and 'Shh' can all be interpreted as 'girl love' songs, though IU's never openly admitted it. Most of those song were explicitly about her friend Sulli who died by her own hand in 2019. Staff members have described weeping while watching IU on stage singing 'Secret'. That implies there's something in that song to weep over.

I believe holistically, the MV/Song can be taken as a tribute to the sorority of womanhood relationship in an open-ended way like all great work of art can do, although in IU's personal take would be about mother and daughter according to her recent interview. You can see how she use feminization through out the lyrics, the visual concept for the album, her concert tour: HER(EH). CherryB who guest in the MV was a singer she wrote HER for. Given the context of Film Noir (French), when she mentioned it is not about L, it is not about F contrast with it is all about L, it is all about F etc.. L and F can also mean: L = 'Elle' ('She' in French) F = 'Femme' ('Women' in French, as in Femme fatale, the protagonists in the MV) Some background information about her family, she was raised by her grandmother who survived by selling trinkets/accessories on the street, who alone raised her and her baby brother along with her 2 cousins (elder girls) when they were young when her parents got caught up in unfortunate financial circumstance through no fault of their own. Poverty and work are something not really discussed for obvious reasons. Her mother now also runs a business selling accessories. She comes from a family of hardworking strong mothers who raise their family in a patriarchial society like Korea where any talk about feminist traits or strength is met with great hostility. The title of the song 'Shh' is therefore extremely clever in that context, as with the experiential conundrum of a soliloquy. The work include the view of all the artists involved including MV director/producer/script/storyboarder to create this unconventional all-generational project. Something all women knew but can not or do not really talk about. The grandmother is included covering multiple generations. In the beginning of the MV, the white car is carplated 1938, the birth year Patti Kim who narrates the 4th part of the song. Tang Wei casting is purposeful in that 2 of her most famous roles have to do with women wronged, being multifaceted complex enigmas. Lust Caution, a brilliant film debut that got her banned in China ('Shh' actress of China everyone respects) for playing a young inexperienced double agent during the civil war, and Decision to Leave, the recent Oscar entry from Korean cinema. Both show how women try to survive in the most impossible circumstances to do what they think is right to reconcile loyalty, morality, necessities, risks and sacrifices.

IU stated that this was a film and, as films go, it has a dark theme. In the PAST, She had placed those she loved in the cellar (so they can be with her forever) - her mother and her friend. In the PRESENT, she spots IU, who looks very much like her mother. Before seeing IU, she had early spotted someone who looked like her friend, whom she (assumed that she knocked out) had already placed in the boot. She would have place IU in the boot too except IU boldly approached her first and confronted her (why are you staring?). She hesitates as IU has found out her secret (IU looking down into the cellar) and yet doesn't seem afraid of her. Towards the end, it can be assumed the woman in the boot will be placed down in the cellar too. However, she accepts IU as her mother figure in the present, living together as mother and daughter, with IU keeping her secret...Shh The scene with the child and IU is the look back at the past when she was with her real mother. A dark theme indeed. [Note: IU has talked about what she wanted to portray with this movie] A darker theme? How many times has she driven around looking for people that looked like her mother or like her friend? IU delivers another MV movie! IU has really gone all out for her fans: 4 MVs from 5 songs - 1 Fantasy, 1 Fun, 1 Dark and 1 Apocalyptic. And each one with so much meaning imbedded within. Indeed, Uniquely IU. Respect much!
