*EDIT* While I had speculated at the time of making this video, that the flow was "likely" due to ox gall - Jackson's has confirmed on their product page for Roman Szmal that these paints contain animal products "Honey - Bee Product, Oxgall - Animal Digestive Liquid" are noted. This is slightly disappointing, since the main text for each paint only says "gum arabic, glycerin, linden honey, distilled water and pure pigment". It's not an unusual ingredient list, but several of my colors had unusual flow causing me to question the inclusion of a flow agent. Upon digging I do see ox gall listed in the separate "spec" tab.

I got one of the other two sets, they seemed like very good value, and I added half a dozen single colours to fill the tin I had for them. I haven't really experimented much with them yet but they seem reallynice on swatching and have the kind of interesting qualities I lookout for. Your paintout is lovely, and does this tiny sample set justice. Caput mortuum is a very shifty kind of pigment by nature, dry it is quite dull, and wet it is lively and deep. It is like that in all kinds of paint, it isa bit like chromium oxide green like that, very flat and dull on its own, but also very useful once you get to know it. Both mix very well with the more translucent whites, and buff titanium, to give very subtle pale tones.

You make these smaller sets look AMAZING... You blow my mind with your drawings and then bring them further to life with these gorgeous, rich colors!

I love watching you paint, you have such a delicate touch. I have just received the same set of Roman Szmal paints and love them! I can’t wait to buy more...and my Jackson’s Art cart is full and waiting for me. I have plenty of the standard colors and have been searching out unique pigments and mixes, so to have access to these wonderful Polish paints is a real joy for me :)

This color selection reminds me of the Sennelier, try it, tube set. I was fortunate that a friend gifted me her Amazon duplicates of rose madder and rose madder dore that were sitting unused. The blue based rose madder (they were both beautiful shades) rounded out that set nicely. Regardless, you achieved beautiful results with these.

The description on Jackson's says ox gall and honey. Thanks for the review! I'm relieved they are available on Jackson's. I've been trying to figure out how to purchase these for many months. In frustration I mixed my own shadow Violet and mineral violet. I think I'll wait until after the initial rush to get these watercolors before I get a few. Thanks again

Thank you for your review. If been trying to get hold of some of these paints for ages and was over the moon when Jackson's got them in. I guess it's hard to reach a firm conclusion on a small set which doesn't include some of your must haves. I was so excited I bought the big sets and then some! I haven't yet done any paintings with them but done some swatching and initial mixing. I'm quite impressed overall. In every brand there are a few pigments which don't perform as I'd hoped and so far there's only a few of these I'd be avoiding. I was wary being honey based because I've struggled in the past using Sennelier unless just for refined glazing techniques, but I haven't had those issues with these paints and they lay down beautifully strong washes (pigment allowing). At these prices it would be rude not to try them, lol! (unless you're vegan or against animal derivatives). The huge bonus is I feel I can experiment with abandon and not be too precious about it, which I definitely feel with my D.S. or Schmincke paints which cost me a small fortune. I even think there are a few paints from this brand which will become firm favourites, e.g. Some of the earths are amazing if you like granulation. And earth pigments are often where I feel let down by some of the "top" brands, especially as I prefer to work from pans rather than tubes. I loved your trial painting, I always love that part of your reviews. Thank you for taking the time to show the paints at work.

I struggled finding them for months and was so happy when I found them at Jacksons too. I went overboard and bought quite a few, so I'll do a video for my complete haul soon. There are definitely some colors that are unique and incredible compared to other brands. I too thought the affordability compared to Daniel Smith was really nice for some of those unique and granulating colors that only DS used to have. I'm going to have so much fun playing with these. Will do, until then - Roman Szmal has more granulating earth browns and several color separating mixtures (like Daniel Smith's Moonglow) that are not present in the White Nights catalog. It's a bit cheaper to collect the standard colors that both brands share in White Nights.

Thank you for another fine review, I like your drawing and painting style very much! So these paints contain ox gall... that’s disappointing. But I’m glad I know now, so thank you for the info. I’ll remove these from my wish list.

Hi there, so sorry to mislead, as I am not 100% certain on that. I said it's likely that the fast flow is from ox gall, but it could be that they just add enough glycerin to make it flow so fast. Though, in my experience many brands commonly add ox gall as a flow additive. According to Jackson's they say gum arabic and glycerin, linden honey, distilled water and pure pigments but I haven't been able to find a direct answer from the manufacturer. Due to the honey, this is not considered vegan if that is also a concern. Apologies for my assumption and I'll let you know if I find out differently.

Sadly, I confirmed with Jacksons on their spec for Roman Szmal paints I see the warning for animal ingredients include "Honey - Bee Product, Oxgall - Animal Digestive Liquid". Bummer, they are such pretty paints!

Thank you Kimberly, for looking into it! I couldn’t find any info when I looked for it some time ago, but living in Europe I never go to Jackson’s website. I’ll keep that in mind for next time. Thanks again! :-)

Do you think these paints are worth it? I’ve heard some concerning things about mold forming if the palette is closed while paint is still wet. Also, while the price is quite reasonable at jacksons, if I want to buy a full set it is a bit pricey with shipping as well.

I think that this brand is best bought for single colors that are hard to find in other catalogs. For instance they carry some granulating earth browns and mineral paints that are not easily found elsewhere, and many of them are cheaper than pigments only found in Daniel Smith brand otherwise. I don't think I would buy a big set of Roman Szmal, because there are paints that are just as good for the normal pigments that you can get cheaper from White Nights or Paul Rubens. If I want a specific rare color or unique mixture though, these are definitely worth taking a look at. Any watercolor can mold if you leave them wet, part of that can be introducing mold from tap water and humid environments. I use purified water and leave my palette open after I'm done painting for a little while though after having that happen to my van gogh paints years ago I'm more careful now.

Boy, I've heard from my friend Lee these paints were on sale at Jackson's. Since I've splurged A LOT on black Friday, I'll wait for next year to justify the purchase of those paints. I don't know which colors to choose, being honest, other than that I want any of the PBk11s available there (probably I'll get mars black since it's a series 1 paint? )
